Archives: 1998
Join us and re-live our past as we share with you some of our previous history from our archives of our early years. When you consider how the GPS industry and its products have evolved over the last decade, especially at the consumer level, the changes have been nothing short of phenomenal!
Read along with some of these archives and you will see how the products have evolved, adding new capabilities and functionality all the while maintaining or reducing the cost to you, the end user. You will also see the historical nature of the constant struggle between the release of new products and meeting announced delivery dates. It really is a struggle, and no-one has yet to master it!
The following information is from our actual 'What's New?' webpages back in 1998, our 4th year in the business, and is presented here for your enjoyment and to re-live a bit of history with us!
1998 ARCHIVES: WHAT'S NEW?
December 2, 1998 - GPS III Status:
As we bear down on the last few weeks of the year, it seems there will continue to be somewhat of a shortage of the GPS III units. Garmin has not been producing enough to meet the demand of recent weeks. We have lots on order, but Garmin is handing them out a few at a time. We do expect the bulk of our III's to arrive over the next 2 weeks. If you can't find immediate satisfaction somewhere else, then place an order here and you will be in the queue for one when they arrive.

Our first StreetPilots have arrived, but in limited quantities - we have received about a fifth of our original ordered quantity. We are sending them out to our clients in the order they were received. To those customers who have waited with us for these last 4 or 5 months, a hearty "Thanks for your patience!!" to you. Again, please note that our first shipment of SP's is currently SOLD OUT and we are now taking orders for August/98 delivery.
June 16, 1998
As of yesterday, we have been advised by Garmin that the new StreetPilots are now shipping in very small quantities. Best delivery date given to us for our order is "the last two weeks of June", so we are still anxiously awaiting their delivery. If you are in a hurry for one and find other dealers out there with some of the first shipments from Garmin, you are under no pressure to stay with us - just call and cancel your order before we ship it. Also, please note that our first shipment of SP's is currently SOLD OUT and we are now taking orders for August/98 delivery.

We will now be stocking the hot-selling GPS 48 - Garmin's replacement model for the the GPS 45XL - previously the best marine GPS unit in the world! We expect them in stock by the end of May, 1998. Also, we have added the Garmin video tape "Using your Garmin Personal Navigator" to our line-up as well. This is a great tape which explains all about the units and their operations and applications.
May 5, 1998
This just in! In discussion with Garmin today we have learned that they have yet again pushed out the delivery date for the Garmin StreetPilot to 'early June'. We have been told that the units were very well received at the pre-launch trade shows and that the engineers are taking a little longer to add a few extra features that the test audience suggested in feedback to Garmin. Sorry folks, it's out of our control and we are just as anxious to get them as you are. Also, first ship quantities will go fast and Garmin is now advising that next available date is for August shipping. GPS City is still one of the first orders in the queue to be filled.
April 8, 1998
New lower price: GPS 12 now priced at $154.95.
Also lower prices on a number of accessories - check them out on our pricing page.
April 7, 1998
Here is the latest scoop on the StreetPilot! Garmin advises as of this morning that they will be shipping StreetPilots in early May for those dealers who are already in the queue. Any new dealer orders will not ship until June or July. This means that the first batch of StreetPilots will go fast and that there will be at least a month's delay for the next deliveries. GPS City is one of the first orders in the queue to be filled, so we believe we will be one of the first dealers to receive shipments of the StreetPilot.
