For many years, the main mapping program by Garmin was titled Mapsource, now in 2009 they have decided to switch their Topo Canada mapping to a program called Basecamp. With such changes there are bound to be questions regarding the older software and whether it is still a viable option. In short the answer is yes, Mapsource and BaseCamp both have strengths for certain practices. Mapsource is recommended for all GPS units, as long as you don't want 3D viewing. Only a handful of the new GPS units from Garmin are fully compatible with BaseCamp, and the 3D Topo maps released this year. These units include the Oregon and Colorado series so far, with more units to come in the future.
