Industry Canada released a statement in June 2009 saying that by 2014 products with a wattage output of higher than 2 watts will be permitted in Canada. A long time coming, this will allow users to transmit radio frequencies over longer distances.

The Garmin RINO series was always available to Canadians, but was limited to a 2 watt version. With the ban being lifted, the 5 watt version that was reserved for US use only will be sold and used legally in Canada.

Another GPS that will be available north of the 49th parallel is the Garmin Astro. The Astro is a dog tracking system that can show precise and updated locations of any dog wearing the compatible Garmin DC-20 collar.
