TomTom's MapShare program allows users to share data collected during their trips with other TomTom users. This data has now been published revealing where the slowest and fastest roads are in the US.
As this is strictly based on TomTom data, the reliability of the information is compromised. One interesting fact this study has concluded is that most drivers are staying within the speed limits and not speeding.
Much of the recorded information is from interstate highways and areas of low traffic congestion. These two criteria are fundamental in determining how many users are speeding: the higher the traffic volume, the less chance of drivers being able to speed.
Some interesting facts found with these recorded speeds: - Mississippi has the fastest roads on average, with posted limits from 65-70 MPH.
- The fastest road in the US is the I-15 between Utah and Nevada where the posted speed limit is up to 80 MPH. Surprisingly, the average drivers speed is only 77.67 MPH.
- The slowest recorded average MPH was in Washington, D.C.
- The most common speed travelled was 46 MPH.
