2009 marked the release of Garmin's European Nuvifone and North American Nuvifone G60. These were met by fierce competition from Apple's iPhone, Blackberry's Bold and many others, leaving the Nuvifones trailing. This year shows an improved device using the Android system, including the new Google catalog of applications. Some of Garmin's competitors have released applications to work on the iPhone, but none have released their own smartphone. Garmin, ever a leader in navigation technology, is offering their world-class mapping and guidance in an all-in-one device. Social netwroking aspects, such as Facebook, YouTube and access to personal or business email are all standard features. This postions Garmin nicely for the coming barrage of social media-enabled phones, and gives them the edge of internal navigation features.
