The newest must-have in the vehicle GPS world is traffic updates, which provide routing information to detour around congested roadways, accidents and construction sites. Manufacturers like Garmin and TomTom have had traffic data available for a few years, and now Magellan is joining them. The 2010 GPS lineup from Magellan includes eight new devices containing free traffic service, as well as multi-destination routing and text-to-speech directions. The new series includes basic entry-level units like the Roadmate 2035, which only has US map data, or the 2036 which includes both Canada and the US mapping. The Roadmate 2000 series also offers AAA Tourbook and Roadside Assistance, then at the top of the series the 2045 features a microSD card slot for additional maps. The higher priced 3000 series of Roadmates includes many of the same features as the 2000 series with some key differences. The Roadmate 3045, which comes preloaded with US, Canada and Puerto Rico also boasts a larger 4.7" screen, as compared to the 4.3" screens on the Roadmate 2000's. If Bluetooth is a feature you're interested in then you'll be looking at the Roadmate 3055. The largest display can be found on the 5045, which has the same functions as the 3045, but with a huge 5" screen. The crème de la crème of the new Magellan line is the Roadmate 3065 Commuter. Which as the names suggests, helps design routes based on daily commutes. This unit also includes the lifetime traffic but utilizes the data in a different way from the other 2010 models. The Traffic Wake-up mode boots up the GPS prior to your normal departure time to initialize satellites and process the traffic information before your commute even begins. The 3065 will "wake-up" 30 minutes before your scheduled leave time, and gather all the traffic data to plan the best route for your day's commute. For the past few years Magellan have kept themselves out of the limelight, but with the release of these new units they are definitely looking for some recognition. Before purchasing any traffic capable GPS, please check the coverage area map, as your city/town may not have coverage just yet.
