SPOT announced another version of their popular GPS messenger, this one designed specifically use in dangerous conditions. The new SPOT IS is geared towards the oil and gas, mining, and transportation industries. Easily identifiable with its vivid blue casing, the SPOT IS is certified Instrinsically Safe, meaning it meets safety standards for workers in the presence of flammable gases or vapors. This certification was completed by MET Laboratories, which have labs across the United States and Asia. SPOT IS uses the GPS and GlobalStar constellations of satellites, allowing workers to gain accurate position data and send status update messages. These messages contain their current GPS coordinates so that contacts can monitor their position and send help directly to the area in an emergency. The world-wide coverage includes North America, Europe, Australia, Northern and Central Africa. Partial land coverage of North-Eastern Asia, South America as well as off-shore data. All of these coverage areas are included with the $99 subscription, which is activated through SPOT's website.
