By the end of 2011, all new vehicles in Brazil will be required to have a GPS-based tracking system installed. This may not be good news for car thieves in São Paulo, but GPS tracking companies are seeing it as a great business opportunity.
Brazil is adding 2.5 million new cars per year, and its theft rate is
triple that of the United States. Consultants are predicting the tracking systems
market to nearly double by 2014.
Companies providing location-based services—primarily of stolen vehicle recovery and tracking services— will see a huge revenue increase in the years to come. Wireless communications products will also see a rise in volume as they can be used in conjunction with the tracking products.
Although the services vary in price and function, the basic structure is the same. GPS data being sent from the tracked item, such as a vehicle, to a server that stores the data until it is accessed by the tracker. The vehicle's current and past positions can be transmitted, as well as other important information like speed and fluid levels.
Tracking systems can be customized for fleet management or tailored for individual needs. To determine the best system for your particular needs, first decide what information you would like and the price you're willing to pay. some such systems are the Entourage PS and CIS units by Escort which have packages that can be designed for specific needs and services.
