 DriveSmart Plus, an add-on for the LG Optimus T, restricts phone calls and text messages while driving. This feature enables drivers to concentrate on the road and ignore distracting alerts from their phone. Although a subscription is needed, users can add DriveSmart Plus for a reasonable $4.99 per month. The feature can be added to all compatible lines on the account. It is great for family plans, but not too expensive that single line accounts would be deterred by the cost. Automatic detection of a car's motion, using GPS and accelorometers, instantly activates the DriveSmart application. At this time, all phone calls are routed directly to voicemail and all incoming text messages are sent a canned reply. There is an override option that can be initiated at any time, thus rendering the feature useless. However, for concerned parents, there is an option to monitor the use of the override option, which will send a text or email when the application is deactivated in mid-use. Currently, only the Optimus T is compatible with the DriveSmart Plus but T-Mobile promises more hardware versions in the future. With more GPS enabled smartphones and location-based apps, DriveSmart Plus is an application for the future. |
