Starting yesterday, bus riders in Toronto can now use GPS to track the location of buses. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is using a real-time GPS tracking website run by NextBus, a California-based company. NextBus also uses GPS to track public transit in other major cities in Canada and the United States.
Using GPS satellite, NextBus tracks Toronto city buses along their routes, constantly updating the NextBus website with the current location. The website can be accessed via computer or smartphone. When online, riders select their bus route to pull up the next three scheduled buses. Also online, passengers can access a real-time map showing bus locations. Currently, GPS tracking is available for 9,300 TTC bus stops in the city and as additional 800 stops around the Greater Toronto Area.
Along with the online tracking website, the TTC will set up display screens in city subway stations and bus stops to keep passengers informed. |
