An interesting study has lead researchers to believe that the font set on your dashboard or GPS in your vehicle could cause you to crash. As technology has improved and more people are depending on GPS units to get from one location to another, drivers spend more time glancing from screen to road. MIT researchers have compared a range of fonts, discovering that the differences in the fonts have caused delayed reaction between glances. The research team tested two fonts on a select group using driving simulators and eye tracking cameras. Although the variances in the styles were minor, one being boxed and the other rounded, researchers recorded that men were able to process the rounded font quicker than the other. There was a significant 10.6 percent delay in reaction to the boxed font. Women were reported to have little reaction between the two fonts. With a test like this, there is no doubt that more studies will come in order to help manufacturers improve their products to minimize distraction. |
