Plug in your GPS - check. Open the Garmin Basecamp program - check. Create your own adventure - check. It really is just that simple!
First thing's first, grab your Garmin handheld GPS. Next step is to get out and moving, Go for a bike ride, a leisurely walk or an intense hike. Save your trip using the Track feature of your GPS. Change your track point settings to Auto or Distance, and mark some waypoints along the way. Stop to take some photos (with your GPS if it has one, or with another camera) at interesting locations.
Once you get home, plug your GPS into your computer and launch the Garmin Basecamp program. This software comes included on the Topo Canada and Topo US 100K DVDs, but can also be downloaded for free from garmin.com. Basecamp will recognize your GPS, and when it detects new track data, a pop-up window will appear asking if you'd like to create an adventure. You can choose to "Close" the window, and continue to use Basecamp to manage your waypoints, tracks and routes, or your can select "Create Adventure".
Another window will ask you to choose from a list of tracks with numbers assigned to them. These numbers determine how interesting of an adventure that specific track will make. The more detail such as geocaches, waypoints and photos in the track the higher the number. After the desired adventure possibility has been selected you will have the opportunity to include notes, additional photos and video. You will be asked to provide a title and description for the adventure. Suggest a best time of year if the adventure is a bike ride, or recommend supplies that people should bring along on a hike.
Choosing a Level of Difficulty is very important, as this will indicate how advanced the adventurer must be to accomplish the task. Adding in the activity type will also help people decide whether it is ideal for them. Supplying keyword tags will ensure that people looking for a specific location, POI or animal encounter will choose your adventure.
The final step is to publish your creation. To do this, click the "Publish" button at the bottom of the last window. This will share the data with the online Garmin community or you can choose emailed to friends and family. See one of GPS City's own completed adventures HERE. |
