Same RAM new GPS

click for larger view
RAM and Zumo
For a number of years I had a Garmin GPS III Plus that was given to me as a gift. I purchased the RAM mounting system and installed it in front of the tank on my VFR. Sadly, I never got into using it that much, but I left the ball and kept the arm. Fast forward to last week, and my new toy, a Garmin Zumo 550 arrived and guess what it fits on? That's right, the same RAM set up I had for my old one. I've just ordered a longer arm from GPSCity to raise the unit a little higher, but it was awesome to have a place for it right out of the box. What a great combination. Here is a picture of my new set-up that will see many, many miles of use. Ride safe!

ram mount on 700efi Polaris

After 3000+ miles on all kinds of trails here in Wonderful Wyoming my Ram Mount outlasted me,the "700". After a end over end tumble down a rather large hill my shoulder and the Polaris were both totaled but not my sturdy Ram mount,it held up under this extreme abuse just fine! Now after healing and replacing the Polaris with a 08 "800" the old Ram mount is going on this new machine. I hope that I never find out just how tough these mounts really are! these Ram mounts are to be recommended to one and all.

Gravity-2 Matthew-0

I've more than proven from time to time that when it rains it POURS. This day was no exception. It was shortly after New Years and the weather in the area was beautiful (+17c) so myself and 3 fellow cachers decided to embark on a caching journey... one that wouldn't be forgotten anytime soon.

Everything started out ok, getting a few park-and-grabs here, doing a multi there... no biggie really. It was on a cache that we had trouble locating that my battle with physics started Shiretown Map Cache (GCY4J9). I was the eagle-eyed one for this find and as I was reaching for this cache (I was on a hill, BTW) I felt the Earth's pull in all its fury. It felt like I was moving in slow motion without being able to do a single thing about it...CRASH!!! there I go as an elderly couple walking by just looked, smirked and continued on. To quote, "I'm ok guys, the thorn bush broke my fall."

More caches found without incident, then we come up to Slickenside (GCVAZQ) at a 4.5 terrain. It's up the rock slide we go to a wonderful view of the valley below, which we appreciated AFTER we caught our breath. Found the cache with much effort, but then it was going back down the hill that physics and the gravitational pull showed its face again. Imagine if you will, a baseball slide... only on sharp shale like rock and not on nice level ground but a steep hill where you can gather speed as you decend. Didn't think anything of it really, just thought that I got down the hill alot faster than climbing it. Got back in the car and it was then I realized, hmm, I don't remember that red stain on my jeans before I did this cache. Sure enough I was cut... not bad enough to call it quits. I called the wife and she asked me how things were going. I simply replied, "Things are going great...uh... do we have any peroxide in the house?" With that, the rest of the people in the car were all but wetting themselves with laughter.

All in all, I proved gravity still works, even outside of your home... would I do it again, if there's a cache in it for me... yeah!!!

Forgot My GPS

Driving down throughout Langley heading to a family event and had no idea how to get there. Went to grab my Gps and relized it was in the other car which was not that helpfull considering I was one our away from home. I had to go to the old ways and pull out the old road maps which were very frustrating. After alot of driving and a lot of turning around we finally reached the destination although the great invention of the GPs would have proved to be very usefull.

You don't know what you've got till it's gone...

I've been a user of GPS for a number of years, and a Zumo 550 for the last year. The guys I ride with don't have GPS units, and regularly give me a hard time about my "GPS dependancy", until last year.

During one of our trips last year we had been traveling together on bikes for about 2 weeks. As we stopped in each town, I'd get asked, "What is there to eat?". I'd check the GPS, read out the list of options, and we'd pick a place. At the end of the day we'd stop at the edge of town, and I'd read off the list of hotels and motels in the area, and we'd pick a place.

After 2 weeks my wife and I went one way, and the rest of the group went another. When I saw them again a week later, their tune had changed. Apparently they had come to depend on my GPS as much as I do! I guess having to find a restaurant or hotel the "old fashioned way" (driving around in circles) isn't all it's cracked up to be.

GPS: don't leave home without it.

GPS Marks The Spot - Flyfish Heaven

The high altitude lakes near Kelowna British Columbia and famed for the beautiful and bountiful Kamloops trout that swim their tea coloured waters. Many of the lakes are interconnected and whether on a belly boat, canoe or aluminum boat, the area spells magic for the avid flyfisherman (or woman).

This year I found a new and wonderful additional purpose for my backcountry GPS. Not only do I know where I am at all time but after I hook into a big one and later release it, I can also record the precise location with comment on my GPS. This latitude & longitude precise recording will allow me to return to the exact location later in the year and next year to try my luck at the now recorded honey holes.

Property on the Lake

click for larger view
Northern B.C. is a BEAUTIFUL place but not for the fool hardy and non-complacent folk ...cuz the more remote areas are not full of roads and signs....so when your looking for a place....its not like finding the local 7-11. Especially when where your going has NO roads!!! (Boat access only) Well I got out the maps and got me a boat....well....modern technology will have to get me to the property...GPS!!!

I now have the co-ordinates of the property....awaitng the GPS in hand...which is on order....I've no doubt that those three letters 'GPS' will have me putting foot on that property and exploring the back 40 without getting lost!! I know this cuz a buddy of mine had one when we went skiing....never got lost in the alpine. Looking forward to GPS technology helping me find my way...:)..:)

School in the Lake

As a supply teacher for the local school board I am called upon to drive to different schools on a daily basis. I, therefore, depend on my GPS to get me to the correct place on time. On one occasion my GPS was taking me to a school out in the county and I followed it with no problems. Of course I figured something was wrong when the GPS announced that I had arrived and found myself at a dead end that ended in the lake. I had to resort to the old-fashioned map in my glove compartment to find the school 10 kilometers west of the lake.

Iphone in Lancer

In Mitsubishi Lancer
I was always keeping my Iphone in bottle holder, but ringer is not so loud, so most of the time I missed my calls. I had my 5" RAM arm which I used with my Garmin320. Since I have Iphone and have maps in it I don't use GPS, so arm became useless. But one day I got a e-mail form gpscity about new products, and I found out RAM made holder for Iphone. Without hesitation got one. Awesome product, now if I can't hear a phone ring, I can see my screen and know I have a call. I can look at the maps and videos sitting on the parking lot. Very recommended.

Ram Mount and the Etrex

I discovered that the US Geological Survey provides data to PASDA in Pennsylvania. This group provides free topo maps (DRG's) of all of Pennsylvania. Once I downloaded the DRG maps I used OziExplorer to map out tracks to upload to my Etrex. I use the Ram mount and cradle to mount my gps on my Honda XR 400R. I have to say the etrex has been bullet proof. It has really taken a beating but has performed wonderfully. The Ram mount also works great. I highly recommend these two items. Mapping out your route on the computer and or uploading a current saved ride to the computer has been highly useful. I know we would have never been able to fild all the places to ride without having the use of gps on a ride.
