GEOCACHING IN THE CEMETARY

Published November 14, 2009 by TERESA SHEARER

It was a very peaceful, autumn afternoon, and many of the graves were adorned with beautiful flowers and wreaths. This was a very tricky cache. There were many people visiting the grave sites, so I had to be very careful that I didn't look odd or appear to be disrespectful. I had to tread lightly as many of the gravestones were flat on the ground, so I didn't want to inadvertenly step on one. I locked in my GPS co-ordinates on my Magellan Maestro and off I went.......exploring......searching.

I inspected the trees in the area to no avail.......hmm where could it be? I saw a park bench in the vicinity so I decided to take a seat and picture things from a different angle. As I gazed around I asked myself..what tree or object stands outs, where would I hide the cache?

After more searching turned up no results, I remembered that I had written a hint on the back of the page that I wrote the GPS co-ordinates on. The hint said....If you can't find it, sit down and rest and think about it! Finally, the light bulb went off...if it's not in the surrounding area, then it must be somewhere on the bench that I am sitting on.

I started to do a thorough inspection of the bench, which came up empty. Then I noticed the ends of the wooden slats. The wooden slats of the bench were inserted into cement legs at each end. To keep the slats from sliding out of the cement, they were held in place by wooden stakes that were pushed through round holes on the outside of each slat. I noticed that some of the stakes appeared to be a little loose. But, surely I thought, there was only room for the stakes in the holes, there couldn't be anything else hiding in there?

I removed the loose stakes one by one, until one of them held the key......one stake had the inside of it carved-out with a little plastic vile stowed inside. I was very pleased to find this tricky cache and promptly opened the vile, unrolled the log sheet and added my username to list of successful hunters. I was careful to return the cache to it's resting place.........pardon the pun, without raising the suspicions of the other cemetary visitors.
