As a member of MARC (Motorcycling Amateur Radio Club) we support many fundraising events, usually for bicyles and motorcycles - e.g. MS and ADA etc. We escort these events and provide communications with our ham radios, often in areas where cell phones would not get the job done.
We also use GPS extensively for a couple of reasons. We preplot the courses we and the other riders are going to follow. We also transmit our GPS positions over our radios which relays our positions using APRS (Automatic Position Reporting System) ultimately to the organizers of the events. This allows them to track where we are and have a better understanding of where the riders (leader, tail end charlie etc.) are.
We also provide support in terms of mechanical breakdowns, calling for medical assistance or just keeping a rider company while waiting for someone to pick them up because they can't continue for whatever reason.
As a result, many of us have multiple pieces of equipment mounted on our motorcycles that we use during these events. Ram Mounts in particular give us incredible options for putting everything we need right where we need it. Attached is a photo of some of the things we may have mounted.
Looking close in the first picture you will see three different GPS units mounted - some for navigating, and one for the APRS described above. You'll also see my ham radio mounted on the top right (right above the Kenwood control head for the Satellite radio and Hard Drive Phatnoise music player.) On the left below my GPS 60CSx is my cell phone and above the GPS is my camera (which takes both video and still pictures.)
I've also included pictures that better show the actual mounts used. |
