LONGGGG DAY ICE FISHING
Published August 12, 2009 by VONN BRICKER

Longggg day ice fishing.

My boys and I head north from Edmonton to Peanut Lake about an hour north. We always take two vehicles just in case one of them gets stuck on the ice. Fishing was awesome. We were the only people on the lake.

Taking a break, we set up the portable BBQ for burgers (we'll save the fish for supper). After years of ragging on the boys about knife safety, I start separating the frozen burger patties with the filleting knife. Yep, knife goes right through one of my fingers. Way cool blood and gore. I realize that this is one requiring medical intervention so I drive myself to Barrhead and spend two hours getting some stitches.

Leaving the hospital, I call the boys on my cell to tell them I lived and will meet them back home. Nope. Won't happen. BOYS DECIDED TO GO TO LAC SAINT ANNE and are majorly stuck. So they decided to leave a lake that was fishing good and was driveable for a lake with overflow? Should have gone back to the hospital for a blood pressure test at that point.

OK, where are you guys? Duhh, we don't know. On the lake somewhere. OK, somewhere in your truck in my back pack is a little Garmin eTrex that your little sister uses when she and I go geocaching. OK, they found it. Turn it on, press this and that button. What are your coords? OK, now I feed it into my Garmin Nuvi and drive an hour to find them.

OK, I finally find them. Jimmy is so stuck in the overflow and no way I am adding my truck to the mix. What to do? Let's call a tow truck. Wonder of wonders, I get the nicest tow truck driver in history who is actually willing to come out. At this point the freezing has worn off my finger and I am hurting. He can't find us and calls my cell. Yippee, he has a GPSr so I give him the coords. Tow truck driver arrives. No way he is going on the ice either. He calls buddy who is also driving a tow truck. Buddy also has a GPSr.

To make a long story short, as the sun begins to set over Lac Saint Anne, we grab every tow rope in every vehicle and add them to the tow cables and have a tow truck pulling a tow truck pulling a Jimmy.

We're free!!!! Oh yeah, looks like poor old Dad is the only one around who can actually pay for the towing plus a couple of well-deserved, fat tips for the drivers. The boys will pay for that one out of their inheritance.

Back at home, nursing my sore finger, it's pay back time. I get my young daughter to teach oldest son how to use a GPSr. It's about time the littlest one gets to be superior to the biggest one. We later got him one as a Christmas present.

GPS is an incredible tool.
