GARMIN CITY NAVIGATOR NORTH AMERICA NT DVD 2010

This DVD makes trip planning a brease all you have to do is tell the software where you are starting from, any stops you want to make and add the destination. It gives you all the turns, how many miles, and how long it is going to take. I don't go many places but when I go out of town I am sure it will be great on my Oregon 450.

STREET LEVEL NAVIGATION

Pros: as per the review text.
Cons: as per the review text.

I have used to Garmin topo maps for Canada and for the USA for some time and have found them very useful. But Canada Topo street levels maps do not always reflect newer streets. The USA Topo is great for topo data, but my Garmin 76CSx can only glean major highway data for 'street' navigation. The City Navigator North America NT DVD corrects both problems. Easy and fast to install any combination of these NT maps. Topo and City Navigator maps can coexist on the GPS, but the City Navigator maps take precedence. Hence, if the user wants to contours, streams, etc, the City Navigator maps set must be deselected.

IT WAS TIME FOR AN UPDATE

Pros: good price at gpscity.com

My previous version of CNNA was v8. With an upcoming trip from Albuquerque to the San Diego area, I figured it was time to update the maps in my Garmin 276c.

Loaded with no problems. I won't know how good it is until I complete the trip, but so far, so good.

CITY NAV

Pros: more points of interest
Cons: still doesn't have all roads up to date

I had an earlier version on a 60cs. I installed this edition on an Oregon 450. It is much improved with more features and is more up to date. It still does dumb things, like the road to my house has the correct name one way and the old name going the other way.

TURN BY TURN MAP FOR GARMIN OREGON

Detailed, routable map for my Oregon. Nothing special, but gives me what I need to have an all-around GPS. I had no problems installing using my MacBook Pro. Loading to a micro SD card is easy, albiet slow.

TAKE YOUR HANDHELD TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Pros: straight-forward installation
Cons: non-incremental map loading

Base maps are just that -- basic. The Garmin City Navigator maps provide neighborhood-level street detail and a lot of waypoints for shopping, parks, restaurants, hospitals, and other "POIs", dramatically increasing the utility of your handheld GPSr. I use mine for geocaching, and these maps have really helped me get close to the cache via the right roads before I re-route direct for the last part of the hike.

If I had to improve one item with the maps (I use the DVD and not the pre-loaded memory card), it would be to allow incremental loads of maps. For example, if you loaded NC and SC to your handheld and later wanted to add GA, you have to reload all three maps and not just GA.

2010 AUTOROUTE MAP UPDATES FOR GARMIN GPSMAP296

Pros: 2010 updates are possible for garmin gpsmap296
Cons: you have to read & follow instructions carefully.

I purchased my Garmin GPSmap296 in 2007. I use it in my Cessna 172 but also we use it as an automotive GPS to drive from New Brunswick Canada to Florida each winter. When I updated my GPS in Feb 2010 I was concerned that they didn't support the older City Navigator North America and I had to purchase the Garmin City Navigator North America NT DVD 2010. My most concern was - after the purchase and loading the DVD into my desktop, would the new DVD updates work in the Garmin GPSmap296? I went on Garmin's website and corresponded via their email to Product Support. I also phoned them. They were very helpful and assured me it should work. I purchased the DVD. After it arrived in the mail, I followed the instructions carefully and had no difficulty loading the DVD into my desktop computer and then using the MapSource software, updating the data card in the GPSmap296. I have used the GPSmap296 on a recent trip from New Brunswick Canada to Boston, MA and back and it works great!

OVERALL GOOD PRODUCT BUT...

Pros: free updates (if any) when you register.
Cons: slow to load on the gps.

It was anoying that I bought a new product and the moment I got it home I had to download an update. On the other hand it is good that they provided it a free update. If you follow the instruction it loads fine, however, it is very slow. At least it was on my 60Cx. Just let it run until it finishes.

GOOD STREET MAPPING SOFTWARE

Pros: value for the money. tons of info.
Cons: missing current information.

This is a good general street mapping program. In the short time that I have had this, I've already noticed a mistake in the location of a business, and it doesn't show the new recreation centre in our town that is now 2 years old. If your looking for a general program to get from A to B. This one will work. Most times.

WORKS BETTER THAN MY POI'S

Pros: got it a very good price
Cons: only works on one gps at a time

The 2010 map was a little tricky getting it into my Zumo. The POI's are very good in my area. Better than the ones I paid for and uploaded.

OOPS - CHECK COMPATIBILITY 1ST...

Pros: a bit faster computing routes
Cons: not downward compatible to streetpilots

Dang - in a hurry to buy latest maps for my Garmin Street pilot before driving out East for the Christmas Holidays and didn't check to make sure this was compatible with my GPS. It installed ok but the Streetpilot could not read the NT maps. So I bought a Garmin 1490 but hooped again (kinda) when the GPS arrived it came with NA 2010 already installed with a free upgrade...

VERY POOR GARMIN SUPPORT

Cons: ripoff

I entered my Garmin unit (GPSmap 60CS) on the Garmin web site and it told me to buy this package. After I unlock it to my unit it turns out the GPSmap 60CS is not compatible with this software. Apparently as far as Garmin is concerned the GPSmap 60CS doesn't exist anymore. Since I had unlocked it they said I couldn't exchange it. Given they had the serial number of the unit when they unlocked the software they unlocked the software for a unit they knew the software wouldn't support.

MAKES STREET NAVIGATING EASY

Cons: can't load the canadian terrain maps as well

I used the City Navigator North America on a recent trip and it made finding shops, restaurants, hotels and other addresses very easy. I use it on a Oregont and like that I can disable or enable the maps very easy and still keep the track or route on the terrain maps.

STILL OUT OF DATE

Cons: out of date for my area

I have the 2008 version and see no difference in the 2010 as it relates to known to me road changes made over the past two years. One change was open to the public two years ago and still does not show up in the 2010 version. We should have free updates to bring the version current.

NEEDS IMPROVEMENT

Pros: it works with my dakota 20
Cons: lacks significant pois, a few navigational quirks

As it is the only map that will work with my Dakota 20, yes, I would recommend it. I would love ot have software to compare it to. Missing tonnes of significant POI's (southern Ontario). Others are not even close to where they really are. After failing to take a planned turn, instead of telling me to turn around, the software told me that it couldn't provide directions from where I was. It would be great if you could simply update online a few times a year, perhaps have users submit POI's.

GARMIN CITY NAVIGATOR NORTH AMERICA NT DVD 2010

Runs great on Garmin Oregon 550. Recently drove from Houston TX to Southeast Oklahoma. On the way up I went my normal route... It took 8 1/2 hours. On the way back I took the route recommended by the GPS. It took 7 hours. I'm very happy with the program.

OUTDATED FOR A 2010 PRODUCT

Pros: not sure
Cons: what else is missing

The product is missing a key new bridge and ferry changes put in for Maple Ridge Area of BC. All roads to new housing and area are missing. Glad I don't have to use in an aeroplane. If its a 2010 item why are roads missing that were built in 2008? 2007 product had a number of errors in Las Vegas where turns were about 1.7 Km out. Hope fixed in 2010

URBAN!

Pros: pretty good for cities & major highways
Cons: not so great in rural areas not very up to date

First note: Works just fine for routing on my GPSmap 76CSx, contrary to another reviewer's experience. This really is a "city" map set. Examples: A tiny artificial lake 150m across, or creek that is little more than a muddy ditch will appear if it is in Calgary. A lake 2km across in a rural area won't be shown, & the Athabasca river "disappears" south of Jasper (at any scale). Yet Rocky Mountain House, with a population of about 34000 won't show at a zoom level that does reveal Nordegg (pop. ~200). 59km of good paved highway 12 between Bentley & Hwy22 isn't shown unless the scale is 3km/"unit" or less. Bike/pedestrian pathways in Calgary are completely absent. In just a little bit of playing, not deliberately seeking such, I found three errors. I’d probably only looked for about a dozen places total while finding these! One is an incorrect category for a business, one an incorrect address for a charitable “Soceity” (sic), and one the wrong name for a Calgary park. Possibly the onus is on the “listees” for correctness, but, nonetheless, they are errors. Locational accuracy for roads seems to be pretty good (based primarily on checks against Google maps). Accuracy for Calgary LRT stations is less good. I don't care about coffee shops, but there appears to be at least a zillion marked, I suspect with deadly accuracy. The maps are not very up to date. For example, the Calgary Crowfoot LRT station and the piece of Stoney Tr between Country Hills Blvd & Hwy 2 are not there (I’m not TOO surprised at this, since I bought my map within about 3 months of these being opened. It will be interesting to see how long it takes for these features to appear in revisions.) --- I've seen Garmin Mapsource 6.14 described as the version from hell. I don't think it is anywhere near as good as that!

Pros: none
Cons: everything

Cons: can't use backdated mapsourse's

It doesn't tell you when loading the new maps that it will automatically upgrade Mapsource to the newest version. For all those that don't like the new Mapsource format, you can't use an older version of Mapsource with the 2010 NT maps

TRAVEL AID

Cons: programs are device specific

A must have for North America travel. Rated a 3 because updates are developed slowly and are extremely expensive. I have two Garmin devices in my family and if I wish to upgrade both I must purchase two mapping programs/updates. I would think that if your devices are registered with Garmin a single purchase could be made for upgrading all of your devices.

GOOD MAPS

Pros: good maps
Cons: device specific

As a Canadian travelling in the US, this is a must have. It has good maps of both countries. The reason for my giving an average rating is that it is device specific. I have 2 Garman GPSmap76csx (which I rate high), there fore I need 2 of these mapping programs. This can get costly. I know of a family that has 4 of these Garmins????? Service from GPSCity - Excellent.

IT FINDS STUFF

Pros: very detailed and easy to keep up to date.
Cons: will direct over dirt trails if you're not careful

Maps are pretty detailed and very easy to update through Garmin's website. MapSource (the desktop application) however, is more complicated than it needs to be but it is nice to be able to plan a route on the comoputer screen. Beats panning and zooming on the small GPS screen.

On the GPSMap series, it will plan routes where you tell it to go, no matter what. On a recent trip on our motorcycles, I planned what looked like a great route and ended up having to detour about an hour because a 30 mile portion was dirt trail.

WHAT CAN BE SAID? IT'S GARMIN.

Pros: works well.
Cons: expensive.

I just wish the data could be more current. Every edition is, what, 2 years out of date by the time it's published? Not a big deal in the countryside but rapid road-building in the cities can get you. Great service from GPScity.
