GREAT PRODUCT

Pros: everything
Cons: small screen

When I got my Blackberry, I would always state: I don't know how I got along with out one. I feel the exact same way with this product. Biking has taken on an entire new meaning for me.

I purchased the 305 over the 705 because I don't need color, maps or directions--who needs that on a bike?

GPSCity made the decision easy with free overnight delivery, a bundled package at $50 less than any competitor and a very easy process.

Having access to my HR has been a much needed addition to my work out program. I mix my training with 3 days of road and 3 days of Mtn, I really enjoy being able to track my progress, view my stats and see my progress.

I STRONGLY suggest using Garmin's website connect.garmin.com to upload your rides.

CHANGED THE WAY I RIDE

Pros: great overall computer in a small package.
Cons: could have better mapping in the software.

Having only ever used a seperate cadence meter, heart rate monitor, it is amazing what you can learn by having them in the same unit. The software could be better by using a topographinc overlay for your routes, but the break down of the route and sumation of heart rate, cadence, speed and calories burned is great. It makes it very easy to compare data associated with individual rides as well. Overall, this is worth every penny.

GREAT PRODUCT

Pros: accurate. easy to use.
Cons: screen a little difficult to read in sunlight.

This little monster does everything I expected and more. The size and weight are excellent. The information provided is more than sufficient. Now that Garmin has upgraded their online software, keeping track of your rides and associated information is very easy. I am very pleased with the Edge 305. It is a giant step ahead of regular cycling computers.

GARMIN EDGE 305 BUNDLE

Pros: several features in one
Cons: display numbers are a bit small

I have used the bundle for about a month and am very happy with it. I used it in Ontario and in Texas, making 16 short trips and going about 185 miles, and it did what I wanted it to. I had a problem with the Training Center software when I updated to version 3.4.3. It wouldn't save on my computer using Vista. I contacted Garmin Tech Services about the problem, and they gave me a solution. I have to run TC as Administrator, so it now works fine. They will correct the problem in subsequent releases.

I shopped around for a while and decided on the 305. I’ve had it for three rides now a total of about 120 km. I have the HR and the Cad options. The 305 replaces my polar heart rate monitor and simple bike computer speedometer. I have put 3300 km on my bike in 9 months and wanted an upgrade to my instruments.

Using gps for a bike speedometer seems technological overkill, but I like the package. Specifically I like that multiple data points are collected so one can see your heart rate in climbs for example. My old set up gave me max and average for HR and for speed, and an overall distance. More data is good. Very good.

The 305 has an interesting way with elevation. I live in a dead flat town, yet my total climb on my first ride was 30 meters. GPS issues with precise elevation is why there is a barometric altimeter. Still the overall climb data is not reliable. It is like it adds up every little bump. Climbs over short hills or bridges are reasonably well recorded.

The software is not really good enough for such a nice device. “Garmin Training Center” records the data, but the standard mapping function is poor. Marketing for the 305 indicates that it is compatible with other maps so better or more detailed backgrounds for your stomping grounds are available. Not really true. The basic program only works with the very basic map included. You have to buy another Garmin mapping product with the maps you want. Then it “upgrades” the interface to use other maps including 3rd party. I consider that a bit of a dirty trick.

I tried the Cycling peaks product demo and abandoned it. Currently I am using the free version of the Motion Based logging system. Better maps and cool email to your friends feature. It has some user interface problems, but overall it is a better more useable system than what’s in the box. Strange or maybe not that Garmin owns MB. Don’t know if I want to pay a monthly or annual fee though. These subscriptions are the death of a thousand cuts. Maybe I should talk to those people I know who are programmers.

Overall I really like it. Glad I got the Cadence and HR version. I would recommend anyone should pony up the extra money for the full meal deal.
