QUICK UPGRADE
Pros: simple to use, geocaching ready Cons: still not enough memory for maps
I bought this unit when my regular etrex Lengend (non-H model) started to fail. It is a nice upgrade over the old model with USB connections and a better receiver. All my old accessories work with this so I was able to save money on a new case, etc. You can also upload Geochache coordinates directly from the website.

GREAT FOR MEASURING AREAS AND DISTANCES
Pros: see above Cons: the instruction book could be even more explicit
Much easier to use than some others. Very strong at getting satellite signals and keeping them - even in wooded areas. And the batteries last much longer than others I've had. So my advice is that if you want to measure how big your fields or woods are, the Legand H is great. And if you want to measure the distance from here to there with altitudes thrown in, again this H is great. And the price is right in my experience.

VERSATILE ALL PURPOSE GEOCACHING GPS
We use 12 of these for school orienteering and trail identification features at a conservation area that sees around 15 thousand primary and secondary school students each year. These units are very easy to operate and have proven to be very durable all purpose units.

GARMIN ETREX LEGEND H
Pros: lots of functions, good battery life Cons: hard to learn & use, poor map, overpriced
This was my first GPS system of this type, so it is hard to compare it to others. (So ignore the "no" answer to the would you recommend this question--the interface allows only a yes or a no and does not have a neutral option. gpscity--fix your questionnaire!!)
Having used it now for a few weeks, I can say that it works and does so well. I'm using it largely in connection with my sailing on inland rivers and lakes.
On the plus side is it has lots of useful functionality and a very long battery life, which is great if you want to leave it running all day.
On the negative side, it was quite hard to learn how to use it. It is a device that has many functions that have probably accumulated through successive models. That makes it confusing to use for the first time. The manual and interface are the sort of thing that is intelligible only when you already know how to use the device. After a few weeks of messing around, I've figured it out. It reminds me of the delights of programming VCRs a few years ago. Once you know how to do it, it's easy. Until then it is bewildering.
The screen is small and the image not great, so this is not a good device if close reading of maps matter. I also think the device is larger than it needs to be. There seems to be a lot of empty space in the case.
The base level maps were a big disappointment. There is virtually no detail in them and coastlines of rivers and lakes are only roughly approximated. You can buy more detailed maps and load them, but they are very expensive, costing as much as the device overall.
Finally, my sense is that the device is overpriced. You are paying more for the brand name than the function. Garmin has perhaps not noticed that one can add a lot of the functionality of this device to a GPS equipped cell phone by downloading free software and, at the same time, get much better maps for free.
