BON APPAREIL

Bonne durée des piles et assez efficace sous les arbres. Fragile au travers des buildings, mais il finit par se stabiliser.

MY GARMIN ETREX LEGEND HCX REVIEW

Pros: very easy to use
Cons: no mac compatibility

Very interesting for outdoor activities. But, as a Mac user, I found it difficult to upload maps in it.

PRETTY GOOD

Pros: size, build quality, water resistent
Cons: menus and software not intuative

This is a very useful tool for canoeing. I first used it on a very long 80+ KM two day trip and it kept us going straight and saved us from making any wrong turns on some confusing large lakes. The menus and controls are not as intuitive as you'd expect after using Apple products or other high end modern electronics. The computer software is equally dated and could be a lot better. These problems aside, everything else works fine. The screen is great and the reception seems spot on. I don't know if I'd try and use it while driving, but this is not why I bought it. I expect it might be very useful for traveling in large confusing cities. Considering the great price (a new model is due out soon), this seems like the best deal around for a small rugged handheld GPS.

REVIEW OF GARMIN E

Pros: versatile

Still learning to use the product. Expect to be very pleased as I was trained using this model. I am with CASARA (Civil Air Search & Rescue). We use the GPS with Ozi Explorer and Search HQ to upload and download search patterns which we fly in practice or actual searches. I am a Navigator and expect to use the GPS on every flight.

LOVED IT SO MUCH WE BOUGHT ONE FOR DAD

We use this GPS for everything from Quading/fishing to GPS'ing our fields. We loved it so much, we upgraded my Dad into one of these for his 65th birthday. He had a Garmin from 15 yrs ago. GPS City has the best rates you'll find anywhere for GPS's, and the most friendly staff.

GARMIN ETREX LEGEND HCX

If this is the Cadillac of GPS, I can't wait until there's a Lexus on the market. Yes the eTrex will do everything, in fact it does too much. And the instructions are anything but intuitive. I'm pretty sure they were translated using the Rosetta Stone, by a guy fluent in Mayan. Give us a manual that actually makes using the unit easier. How hard would that be. Still it's the best for a marine environment.

EXCEPTIONAL TRACKING HANHELD GPS

Pros: price,usefullness, very practical
Cons: no

Keeps signal in difficult conditions, can load tons of maps of everything, sharp display, very good battery life.

Can be used as a hiking gadget ( primary use for me), as well as city street -level routing GPS (not as brilliant as designated auto-GPS, but still acceptable)

UPDATE TO PREVIOUS REVIEW

Pros: user friendly, colour, battery life
Cons: rubber around the edges, map data

I do like this unit for geocaching BUT the soft rubber around the unit is comming off so unit is not water resistant anymore. The maps are not up to date and if you don't know at least a little about the area you end up on dead ends and it has you trying to enter/exit major highways where there aren't any ramps to enter/exit on.

EXCELLENT UNIT

Pros: price. no frills. no fancy touch screen. accurate.
Cons: screen is small but no cons at this price point.

I chose this unit because I didn't want a touch screen. I think the touch screens are problematic in cold wet weather and muddy conditions (at least half the time in the woods). I would have liked a larger screen but not at the expense of unit size and battery life. The Legend finds satellites fast and usually has at least 12 foot accuracy in trees and 6 or 7 feet in the open.

RUBBER FAILURE NO GARMIN SUPPORT

Pros: great unit for backcountry
Cons: garmin support

This is the second etrex I have purchased. Both have had the glue securing the rubber surround fail. It appears Garmin is avoiding responsibility

NICE SIMPLE GPS

Pros: easy to use. bright screen. small and light for tr
Cons: enter/rocker button tempermental. maps worthless

I like how easy it was to use and the addition of the quick instruction guide. Liked the bright screen, I had no problem seeing it despite the small size.

Found the Enter/Rocker button to be tempermental at times, and the reaction time was slow. The maps that come with it are old and incomplete, need to buy a map program seperately.

GREAT MULTI-PURPOSE UNIT

Pros: small size, tremendous battery life!!
Cons: none for me

I love this little unit so much, I bought 2! (one for daughter). I use it with the NA street maps and either keep in on my belt (with the clip) when hiking or on the suction cup (clip) mount in the car (with the cigarette charger for back lighting). (note: It can rotate a bit with this car mount system). If you can deal with the small screen, it's the perfect full time GPS companion.

GOOD GEOCACHING GPS

Pros: good reception and functionability.
Cons: no internal memory (need micro sd)

I am using this model with highschool students. When combined with the Canada Maps Topo edition, they work really nicely for teaching GPS skills, and for Geocaching as well.

NICE UNIT BUT

Pros: easy to run, good battery life, compact.
Cons: workmanship is a bit shoddy, screen a bit small

I upgraded from the B&W legend this spring to this one. I like it very much but would change a couple of things. needs a bit larger screen for older eyes. the soft rubber around the edge of the unit is bubbling and is puckered up in places I don't think it is going to last. other than that I like it.

GREAT GEOCACHING GPS

Pros: good reception and easy to use with geocaching
Cons: no internal memory

I have purchased several of these now over the past two years, mainly for my students to use Geocaching. It has a very friendly interface, and the reception is surprisingly good - important out here in the land of rocks and trees. I was a little disappointed that there was no internal memory, as I only need to store a few MB of maps, but SD cards are cheap these days.

VERY VERSATILE GPS

Pros: quickly finds satellites, excellent battery life.

I bought the HCx primarily for use on my motor scooter and bicycle. As others have pointed out, you need to purchase mapping software (I'm using MetroGuide Canada) to take advantage of the HCx's very good trip routing capabilities. I applaud Garmin for including a printed manual with the HCx. Unfortunately, the manual doesn't cover some of the finer points of creating and modifying routes (e.g., how to change the order of waypoints). I had to learn these things by trial-and-error. Note: if you are planning on using Garmin's handlebar mount kit for the HCx, disregard the instructions to replace the battery cover with the one included in the kit. That cover doesn't fit the HCx. Instead, use the "auxiliary mount adapter" that comes with the HCx to attach the GPS to the mount.

OUR 1ST

Cons: can be a little slow at times when you change dire

Our first GPS, works good for our needs (mostly geocaching). Took a little getting used to but that was probably user error more than the unit not working right.

THE PERFECT HAND-HELD GPS UNIT

Pros: weight, discovery, battery life, color
Cons: onboard map is severly lacking

This great little handheld has come in handy many times since I bought it. After using an old monochrome-screened Garmin eTrex Legend for a number of years, this was a great upgrade! Satellite discovery is fast, even from in my basement, something I was unable to claim before. The color screen is very sharp, but can be dim if you don't use the backlight. With the backlight on, it is brilliant. The device will also switch to a different color scheme at night for easier viewing in low light so as not to affect your eyes.

The only con I had for the device is the onboard map... It's very limited. It listed none of the surface streets around me save for the highways and freeways that run nearby. I had to buy the City Navigator map upgrade from Garmin to get the full set of maps on the device. Once this is done, however, it's perfect. They also offer a number of other maps, and I'll be getting the national park topographical maps as well next.

A VERY NICE UNIT

Pros: colour screen, easy to navigate
Cons: screen a bit small,

I have been using an e-trex legend (blue ) for about 3 years geocaching and on ground search & rescue and liked it very much. I had an ond GPS V that I used in the truck for highway trips. To make a long story short the GPS V died so I got the e-trex Legend HCx to replace it. I have used it on a few geocaches and it is very good. I have downloaded all the topo maps of the maritimes on the little memory card (an extra) and have plenty of room for waypoints and tracks. In the future I'll be getting a card with roads and streets as then maybe when I use that function the GPS won't be sending me on shortcuts where there isn't any access to the highway.

FANTASTIC PRODUCT

Pros: to many to list
Cons: none that i have noted thus far

I am currently using the Legend HCx with the TOPO Canada maps and it works great! The color screen is easy to read, the functions of the HCx were easy to learn and navigate through. The 2 AA batteries last longer in this unit than I have seen with any other products.

I purchased this item along with the RAM mount for the car as it has turn by turn routing, which paired with the City Navigator maps makes this a great all around portable navigator.

I highly recommend the Legend HCx for hiking trails or driving across North America.

Cheers.

THE REAL DEAL IN GPS

Pros: very accurate. long battery life. easy to operate.
Cons: how frustrating, i can't think of one.

Originally bought a base model Garmin H. Decided to upgrade to the Legend HCx. No regrets, there is so much in this little package. Does everything that I need a GPS to do and it's size makes it easy to take just about anywhere. Highly recommend this model.

A PERFECT ADDITION TO YOUR TACKLE BOX!

I bought a Legend HCx in March in time for a fishing trip in northern Manitoba. I enjoy fishing with my buddies who are able to find their way around much easier than I am. With the Legend I was able to mark waypoints as well as two tracks on the lake to our favorite fishing spots. Once this was done, I had no trouble finding my way back which was about 15km. The Legend has given me confidence on the lake and will be a great tool to use on other lakes in the future. As a matter of interest, on the second day we were there this year, two boats came in to the dock where we were staying as we were leaving in the morning. We found out later that day that this group were staying at another spot on the lake but had got lost the day before and had spent the night on the lake. They got to where we were by following another boater in the morning. The lake we were on has 1000 miles of shore line so not a good place to get lost on. What they needed was a Legend HCx in their boat...they would have had no trouble finding their way home. Their expensive boats and fishing gear didn't help them do that. The legend is easy to use/read and the manual that is included provides detailed information on all the functions. Buy one, you will love it!
