THE WORST GARMIN DEVICE I HAVE EVER OWNED
Pros: looks nice on your wrist, Cons: short battery life, user interface is very poor!
Not sure why I bought this heart monitor but it is very hard to interact with. The bezel controls are slow to respond and the user interface sucks big time. I have used the 305 for a long time and love it despite the size. I had a 305 but eventually it stopped working. Might buy another 305 and throw away the 405.

TOOK IT BACK
Pros: wireless Cons: unreliable.
Picked one up at Costco, took it back two weeks later after some lock-up during the data download caused me to lose all my data.
Contacted Garmin Technical support who asked me to make sure all my drivers were updated. Elevated to a Level 2 tech who admittited their web-software was suffering growing pains.
I'll pass.

POOR INTERFACE, BUGGY
Pros: svelte Cons: interface is poor frequent lock-ups
I've used the 405 for >1yr for cycling and rowing. The only reason I've stuck with it so long is that I'm too cheap to replace it with a different Garmin.
The GPS and HRM functions are great, but are essentially identical to the much less expensive Forerunner 305... Unfortunately using interface, especially during any activity, is an exercise in frustration. It seems like Garmin went for 'cool and svelte' as primary design criteria, rather than 'it should work'. Issues: - bezel control rarely works with gloves on, and/or when damp. - bezel is just a dumb idea -- even without gloves this is much harder to work than simple tactile buttons while running or mounted on handlebars. - most of the text on the display is too small, especially to be read while mountain biking. It didn't need to be that way, as Garmin used a significant fraction of screen real-estate to display 'garmin' rather than information. - it freezes too often, even with the latest firmware. Sometimes it can't even be reset and I have to wait for the battery to run down in order to reboot it. - battery life is too short. The rated 8hrs is never achieved and even if it were, that's too short for many activities.
My wife's Forerunner 305 was far cheaper and works better. Maybe the 310XT is much better than the 405.. I hope so.

WORST GARMIN DEVICE I'VE OWNED
Pros: wireless interface with pc Cons: unreliable, locks up,
I have owned and used the Forerunner 405 for 8 months or so. The device frequently locks up and becomes non- responsive when running, expecially if it is raining or humid. It seems the cause may be moisture. The bezel will either not operate in these circumstances or the device starts changing screens all on its own. The wireless interface with your PC is a nice feature. I have owned Forerunners 201 and 305. The 405 does seem to lock onto satellite signals faster than other Forerunners. However with the overall performance (or lack thereof) I would have to say the Forerunner 405 is a piece of junk. Don't waste your money on it.

IT'S GREAT!
I just received my 405 today and while I haven't really had much time to try it outside (since it's raining today) it is truly a nice piece of hardware! I hope that Garmin does change a few little things in a future firmware release, but besides that not too many complaints.
The size and the weight are just perfect, don't notice it too much for wearing it around the office all day.
