A MIXED REVIEW OF THE 910XT

Cons: heart rate monitor strap / device is horrible

I have been quite happy with the watch overall. Here are the areas that are mixed or negative:

The pacing is not that great in my forest test runs as it seems to be all over the place and not representative of the speed I was running. It worked much better on my 305 forerunner for instant pacing.

The heart rate monitor strap is eating a hole in my chest with only 21k runs despite trying to adjust it to stop the problem. Over many runs of testing this I ended up getting fed up with the issue. I think it has to do with the design of the strap fabric around the heavy big rectangle monitoring box and how it bounces (and rubs) as I run. I had to switch back to my old forerunner 305 strap that I have used for 1000's of kilometres without an issue. I consider the forerunner 305 strap to be a much better strap and the new "premium" one that came with the 910XT is pretty much useless to me.

The altitude monitor seems to be a bit off based on my experience but overall it seems to be better than the GPS altitude numbers.

In the pool swim mode, if you slow down or stop near a wall then it sometimes counts that as a whole lap even if you only went like 3-5 feet from the wall and stopped. A good push-off seems needed to accurate count the end of a lap.

Here are some of the positives:

1) Tracking the swimming is great as long as you don't do something odd when in the pool swimming mode. Overall, the waterproof mode is great to have as well.

2) The auto laps mode is really great to have on longer runs and races so as to have a quick look at how the last 1k went (or whatever split distance is set).

3) The mapping display system works much better on this unit compared to the 305.

4) Switching between sports does not create the same multi-sport issues that was a nuisance with the 305.

5) The virtual runner feature and being able to set the runner's pace easily on the fly is cool.

Overall its a great training watch and I hope to see a few of the above issues addressed with an update to the firmware. I would skip the "premium" heart rate monitor strap purchase if I had a choice to do it all over again (and just get the watch).

GARMIN 910XT

Pros: ease of use, good display and battery life

This unit is a lot better than my Polar w/G1 GPS unit.

It seems very accurate for distance measurements. The HR can be abit off (higher reading) at the beginning of a run if you had the HR strap on too long before your run. My wife had the same problem (she also has a 901XT).

I very happy with the battery life, haven't had to charge it for the last 4 runs, which included Boston.

I tried to pair the HR strap with my PowerTap unit but it doesn't seem to work, even though both are suppose to be ANT+ compatible. I will now be trying to pair the watch with the PowerTap hub.

The pace reading is all over the place while running, I currently have it set to record every second but will have to try to use the smart setting and see if that helps.

Downloading the data is a breeze.

GREAT FOR TRIATHLON TRAINING

Pros: simple and accurate
Cons: large but not heavy

Used for open water swimming, works best with crawl, tends to lose satellite with breast stroke. Great for running/walking and cycling with cadence sensor and heart rate strap.

IF I COULD MARRY IT, I WOULD

Pros: swinmming
Cons: a littl big with the quick release

The titles says it all. The only weird thing is that out of the box it does'nt tell time, you have to change the display option for that. They could allow you to change the type of swimming in garmin connect when it did'nt figure out the right one and the swin alert for pool should notice you that you finalizing you xx lenght while your completing it because it takes the watch about 5 sec to realize that you completed the lenght
