GOOD SOUNDER

I bought the GPSMAP 421s to use for checking my water depth in a gravel pit. We needed to identify where our bucket was filling. This depthfinder shows me the bottoom very well. It was easy enough for me to use without reading the manual. It works well for me and I'm quite happy with it. It does what I bought it for.

NICE COMBO

Cons: the manual is poor of explainations

easy to install, screen size big enough, some problems with the sounder that loses the signal when changing of direction or slowing down too fast. takes a long time to recover the depth. the sounder works untill boat speed is 30 km/h and stops working when depht is over 250m. nice for fishing, the sreen shows the size and depth of the fish, but i don't know why the fish symbol is or blue, or orange. when marking a waypoint, you have to name it straight because you can not change the name when recorded.

GARMIN 421S MARINE SOUNDER/GPS

Pros: excellent display - brightness good
Cons: base maps useless - purchase better ones

Excellent depth, temp. voltage display. Used on a sailboat so fishfinder not necessary but interesting. The basic maps are too vague for inland lake use, so purchased maps are best. INstallation took about two hours but easy if you are good with a drill and battery hook up. GPS CIty.ca was great with shipping time.

EXCELLENT MARINE PRODUCT (GPS)

Pros: features, easy to use, simple, compact
Cons: problem mounting dash area bayliner 175

Bought a new Bayliner 175, did some lake shoal damage, in Nova Scotia. Should of had this unit prior. Same installed and worked perfectly, the fish finder was an add on as I needed the best sonar for the bucks. Issues mounting on the Bayliner 175 dash, Had to take out the existing cup/drink holder, used the mount that comes with the unit, but had to be creative to secure tight, through the holder opening, and small piece of plywood on the bottom. Very tight/works perfectly, no further issues

GREAT UNIT..

Cons: bigger display? one more inch costs 200???

first fishfinder that tells me the speed when i'm under way. Very impressive combining the finder and chartplotter Useful for when traveling the fraser river between new west and hope. installs in under 30 minutes or 5 minutes if you dont need to mount the transducer...

EXCELLENT LITTLE UNIT

I have found this unit to be a great value, it has taken little time to get used to operating in all kinds of conditions. The bluechart (not vision) chip is mandatory but very good, I use the fishing charts more than the nav charts. The screen size is not an issue for me, scrolling and zooming are very quick.

GOOD GPS TERRIBLE/USELESS BASEMAP FOR CANADA

Pros: good gps
Cons: useless basemap

GPS start-up is quick & operation reasonably simple & intuitive. However basemap is totally useless and Garmin shouldn't be selling a unit with such a worthless feature. I bought this unit for use in Central Canada (Manitoba) and no 'Lakes' maps are (yet) available for much of the province, and Garmin isn't able to provide any indication of their pending availability.

GREAT GPS BUT MOUNT IS AWKWARD

Pros: wonderful piece of equipment
Cons: cannot flush mount without special kit

works as promised no issues garmin is wonderful brand but, mount only works for upright position, connecting wires will not permit flush mount, cost considerable time and money to fix this issue.

WOW!! DON'T KNOW WHAT I DID WITHOUT IT

Pros: easy to use. works awesome.
Cons: none.

Just bought the 421s with dual frequency transducer and the St. Lawrence chart with all the bells and whistles. As someone new to boating I wanted to be able to comfortably explore the many rivers around the Ottawa area. This machine is amazing and does everything it promises. I feel extremely comfortable based on the routing it provides you and the detail in terms of obstacles. Highly recommend. Had the transducer professionally installed by marine store to ensure it was mounted properly and that is something I would strongly recommend as well given you are drilling in to your boat. Thanks GPSCITY.
