I wasn't really sure what category to place this story in... Motorcycle or Geocaching. However, since it involves a modification to the bike, I figured that category would work best, even though it was geocaching that prompted me to make the modification in the first place!
Last year I got the middle-age itch... it was time to recapture some of my youth. What better way to do it than start riding a bike again? Since I hadn't ridden in many, many years, I thought I should start out with a smaller bike, so, after a little hunting, I was able to find a 1983 Suzuki Tempter GR650 with less than 9,000 original km on the clock at a great price. The bike had been in storage for a while and needed a little tlc, such as replacing some signal lights, changing the windscreen brackets and de-rusting the fuel tank.
Once I got her going, I immediately started riding all over the Manitoba countryside. This is what got me back into geocaching. It was a new way to get to caches that were more than a walk away and it was fun! The problem was that I had trouble navigating. I would have to get a basic heading to a cache location, pocket my Garmin 60CSx GPSr and ride. The maze of minor highways soon had me flummoxed and I found myself stopping more and more often to re-acquire my bearings. It was really bad due to the major flooding Manitoba experienced in the spring of 2011 with all of the road closures and bridge wash-outs.
For this year, 2012, I was determined to make my geocaching life a lot easier. After a search online, I found that RAM mounts would probably fill the bill for me quite nicely. GPSCity had the parts at great prices and were located in Canada, so that made it a no-brainer for me.
I placed my order for the RAM-B-174-GA12U package, which was everything I needed to mount the 60CSx to a bike. The order was made on a weekend, shipped on the Monday and arrived Tuesday. All I can say is, "Wow - that was fast!"
I had already watched the installation videos, so within 30 minutes of opening the package I was ready to ride. The only issue I had was that I tried to mount to the brake bracket using the spacers (as shown in the video), but in my case, the spacers weren't needed as they made the screws too short.
I took a quick ride and the mount works great! There is zero vibration and I was able to position the unit so it is easy to view but doesn't block my view of the road or my instruments. I grabbed a quick cache and came home.
I'm looking forward to lots of bike-caching this summer! I think I will also eventually put a RAM base and arm in my car so I can transfer the cradle/diamond plate & ball combo to and from both vehicles at will. (I should have got the Navigation package on the car, but...!)

I use my Garmin Maps GPS 60CSx for mapping my bicycle rides throughout Thailand. I used a Ram-B-231-L with an oversized U-Bolt to wrap UNDER the short term that protrudes forward that attaches my handlebars to the steering stem.
This positioned my Ram B-sized 1" ball perfectly. My Garmin Maps GPS then attaches to ball, nestled between my two forward flashing strobe safety lights, which can also be switched to solid beam.
Due to the heat in Thailand, I ride many long distances at night. The GPS 60CSx is fantastic in that the variable display backlighting can be throttled down to 15%, perfect for reading without blowing out my night vision. If I mark a Waypoint, then I stop and key in crucial information.

I decided to mount my GPS on the front rack, instead of cutting away some of the hand protector to get to the handlebar. Unit is close enough for good reading, yet not in line of sight. Works great! |

I just installed this RAM Mount on my Polaris IQ Turbo Dragon. Also I am using the Garmin cigarette lighter plug to save money on batteries.
I think this mount looks very good on this sled. This mount is also very durable.

Vacance VTT camping à Amqui, avec mon gpsmap60cx retenu sur le volant, facile a suivre le bon sentier sans connaitre la région.
Départ de Godbout en VTT sur le Camille Marcoux (traversier) vers Matane, pour 4 jours en CAN-AM Outlander 400 efi. Passage par les éolienne de Matane et la grotte des fées, puis longeant le lac Matapedia jusqu'à Amqui au camping. J'ai eu besoin de consulter mon gps car des sentiers ont été modifier, mais pas besoin d'arrêter car avec le support RAM Mount, c'est facile de consulter en roulant.
Une randonné de 4 jours dans les montagnes de la vallée de la Matapédia. 691 km de plaisir à partir du niveau de la mer jusqu'à 905 mètres d'altitude. Une expérience à revivre.

| CROSSING THE EQUATOR IN KENYA |

According to my Garmin 60csx from GPS City I crossed the equator twice while riding my vintage mountain bike in Kenya. There were a large number of signs that claimed that I was crossing the equator but they were not where I thought they should be. The signs tended to be much closer to the souvenir store than the actual equator. Of course, I would not have known without my GPS.

This is the RAM mount setup on my new 2008 Yamaha FZ1. I was racking my brain trying to figure out where to mount everything due to the lack of fairing but RAM Mounts came to the rescue. I used 2x 1in. Steel U-Bolts on either side of the handlebar mount, a long arm and the cradle for my GPSMap 60Cx. The radar mount consists of a short arm and an Extension Cradle Plate with Ball. We left Calgary toward Banff in late September hoping to beat the mountain snow. Mexico was our destination...off road.
We had a Garmin GPS 60CSx to follow a track assembled from trips previously taken by other riders, a SPOT Satellite Messenger for friends to follow our progress on the web and in the case of an emergency and needed major assistance and an Olympus 770SW camera to stand up to the weather and pounding to record our trip - all mounted to the handlebars via RAM mounts. Very slick!
The GPS 60CSx was wired into the bike's electrics and we changed the SPOT batteries only once as a preventative measure in the 19 days of the trip.
Over 90% of the trip was off pavement and most of the trip was on two-track trail. We covered 5,800 km from Calgary, Alberta to the Mexican border in New Mexico, crossing the Continental Divide 27 times.
Each day was a ride up and over mountains, across valley floors, crossing pristine streams and passing through the occasional small town all in the most amazing and varied landscape North America has to offer. Truly one of my favourite trips ever! I can not recommend it enough. We will do it again.

It all started one Labor Day Weekend at a BMW motorcycle Rally in the Fingerlakes of upstate NY. These Gadget guys showed up as vendor with all this cool stuff. Now I have to admit I love gadgets and when I laid eyes on these Ram mounts I new It was going to cost me. I new that I need to have a mount on every thing with wheels in my garage. Bmw R80RT&R75/5, Honda TLR 200 Reflex Trials bike, Yamaha SRX 250, All 4 bicycles, Ford F150, 72 Land Rover SeriesIII 88 pickup offroad truck, GasGas trials bike, ATV and even my tractor. I use them mostly for my GPS's but also for my cameras and the occasional beverage.
I tend to get lost alot, Of course I don't tell everyone that it is because I try to. |

I took the trip of a lifetime in August of 2008, riding from the SF Bay Area of California to Sturgis South Dakota for the Sturgis Bike week celebration. Out of 5 riders in our group, I was the only one who had a GPS. I had used it before while riding, but had just recently decided to buy an actual mounting system so I could use it while riding. I ended up buying a RAM MOUNT system from GPSCITY.COM and by the end of day one I was already thinking this was the best money I had spent in preparation for the trip. I was able to set each destination for the day into the GPS and very single time we got into a situation where we weren't exactly sure which way to go I had 4 people pointing at me and telling me to get to the front of the pack and lead us out of confusion...haha. I pretty much lead the pack around for most of the trip, and you know what they say; "the view never changes unless you're the lead dog!!" Great product!! |

It was like Christmas! I had received my brand new Garmin GPS60CX and was ready to navigate our latest adventure from Sharbot Lake to Kaladar and mark our waypoints for the falls, the awesome swimming holes and any other points of interest along the way. Attached is the photo of us first using it in the Jeep to get to our launch site and then again, I used it to find out which lake I was nearby and what backroads we could link to, to add an element of surprise to our journey! It was fantastic, full colour display, easy to use and accurate within inches, how awesome- I was the envy of all the 'boys' along the trail. |

This summer we took our first trip overseas to London and Paris. Like any other trip we packed clothes, camera, GPS, outlet adapter and all the other stuff you normally take. Got to Paris and started to walk around and something became quickly clear... forgot to load the Europe Maps into the GPS. Just in front of the Notre Dame de Paris there is France's "Point zéro", which was the official reference point for measuring distances from Paris to other locations. Here my GPS says we are 5664 miles from home. I guess using the Follow Road option to get home with or without the maps would be pointless anyway. |

Read about Photo Gallery before leaving on trip so took a few pictures to show off what we did for ya. Each day (5) we planned a different trip starting just after breakfast and getting back to camp just before dinner. Although you do this all with a paper map, it was really nice to have the GPS telling us that we were on the correct trail as some of the signs were missing from intersections.
Garmin GPS 60csx, City Nav & West Parks Topo Maps and Ram Mount and Sequoia National Forest Park offroad map made it all possible. The combo was outstanding and worked perfect. Thank you. |

In the winter when I go out snowshoeing I always bring my Garmin 60 Csx to assist me in the trails when I go at places I never go before.
A nice place to go in Quebec is the Mount Chauve at Mont Orford park. The trails for snowshoeing are very nice. You can also do some cross country skiing at the park too.
Going on top of the mount chauve is not easy but very accessible for most people. The view on top of the mount worth the effort.

One of my favourite geocaches is called "The Amazing Race", located in a park in the Gatineau, Quebec area. One day last winter I went with a few friends to find it, and soon found ourselves hiking from place to place, looking for clues, solving puzzles -- it was just like being on the TV show! We even split up into two teams to see which one would find the final geocache first -- the team that tried to solve the "Fast Forward" puzzle, which would yield a shortcut to the final location, or the team that plodded ahead with the long hikes and even a climb up a tall tree in search of the next clue.
We finally did find the cache (the team that did the physical challenges got there seconds before the team that solved the Fast Forward clue!), and while we were enjoying our success, signing the logbook in the geocache container, and picking through the prizes inside, we happened to set our GPS units down at the same spot...
You can see quite a selection of GPS units, different brands and models. The important thing is, they all worked well, we all found the geocache, and had a great time doing it. Geocaching is a great activity to bring friends together and even make new ones!

No finding before 6:00pm! I'm following the rules! | | | | | |

Ottawa is known in geocaching circles for its semi-annual "Go and Get 'Em" (GAG) geocaching events. They always start at 6:00pm on a Friday, and the geocaching frenzy lasts 24 hours until 6:00pm on Saturday when everyone gathers at a local restaurant to share stories, photos and prizes over good food and drink! Dozens of brand new geocaches are put out just for the event. The instructions clearly indicate that the new caches are not to be searched for until 6:00pm on the Friday of the event.
Itching to begin, I parked my car as close as I could (legally, of course!) to a cache near my house, ... and waited... moments after this photo was taken you would have seen me (and dozens of other people, at parks all over the city) dashing from their cars, each trying for the coveted "First To Find" prizes!
