GOOD PRODUCT BUT...
Pros: precision, great possibility (some unknown?) Cons: manual of reference
I realy appreciate the quality of the product but the manual included for the 62s is very "poor", basic. For a beginner like me, it's not an easy task to "navigate" from a menu to an other. Surely, Internet (and some friends) help me to get some information but I think that's the responsibility of Garmin to help their customer to get the maximum of their new GPS. A newsletter with some trick, unusual utilization, etc. would have been very appreciate.

UPGRADE FROM 60C
Pros: durable, configurable, glove friendly, visible in Cons: no street level view. need landscape option
Since Garmin hasn't supported the 60C for some time it was time to upgrade. I mainly use this on my motorcycle (cruiser) so I seriously looked at the motorcycle specific Zumo line. Those seem dumbed down compared to the display options of the 62S. I just wish this had the street view option like the Zumo. I have lived with the overhead view all these years now so a few more won't hurt.
The one thing I saw in the Zumo reviews was "difficult to read in sunlight". That is definitely NOT a problem with the 62S and another reason I stayed with this line.

62S A STEP BACKWARD FROM THE 60GSX
Pros: all the pros the older 60gsx had except the above. Cons: many.
I have had the opportunity to us the Garmin 60GSX for about 3 years now. I am a forester with survey experience, an avid outdoors person and am well versed with the use of maps, compass and GPS. The newer Garmin 62S which replaces the 60GSX is without a doubt a giant leap back. It is not intuitive! The map arrow is much too large. It does not default easily to the map or the previous screen as did the earlier version. With the older GSX when you pulled the GPS out of your pocket and touched any button it would refresh the last screen viewed. NOT THE CASE with the 62S. You are always fiddling around scrolling through screens and that in itself if very frustrating. Too bad for Garmin (and me). Luckily I still have my older GPS!

GREAT GPS UNIT.
Pros: holds signal in all conditions. great geocaching. Cons: heavy and bulky.
Upgraded from an old and very basic Garmin GPS model that struggled to keep signal in high tree areas and even light hills. Have been blown away by the GPSMAP 62S!!! It seems to be able to hold signal in any cover, short of being inside a building. Even in the house it will hold a signal until you are completely away from window. Use primarily for Geocaching and work fantastic!!

BEST OUTDOOR GPS
Pros: accuracy, good signal, battery life, altimeter
I bought the 62s for its reviews and I am really happy I did! First the signal is outstanding. It says to get started outdoor, but I went in the house, walked all over and I never lost satellite connection. The interface is very easy to work with. The track back function is awesome, so if you get lost (as I once did in an area plagued with canyon and rock faces) you can get back in pitch dark, provided you watch your step. The buttons make it very useful to me. I know a tactile screen seems more interesting, but it is not easy to operate in cold and with frozen gloves. Buttons make it a breeze. Haven't use it for so long, but it seems very easy on the batteries. The altimeter is pretty accurate, and this is really helpful when planning an ascent, so you know how high you are on the route and based on your progress to decide if you continue or bail out.I paired it with a Topo Map Canada and over all I am very happy with it.

GREAT GEOCACHING HANDHELD
Pros: accurate, easy to use and paperless geocaching Cons: case quality is ok but not as good as it could be
This was an upgrade to my trusty 60C. The paperless geocaching feature alone was worth upgrading. No more printing out cache listings ahead of time and recording finds manually - the 62S does all that. Being able to review the cache description and previous logs / hints while out caching is awesome. The case does squeak slightly and not as sturdy as the 60C's, but it's not enough of an issue for me to not have bought this unit. Nice clear display and easy to use - Great overall unit. The only issue I have so far is figuring out how to install topo maps while the North America maps SD card is installed might be easy, but the documentation doesn't address it very well.

GREAT GEOCACHING UNIT
Pros: so far i like everything about it ! Cons: none
I've been geocaching since early 2003 and have collected many GPS units, both Garmin and Magellan. This unit may be the best of all. I used it on 4 long outings in the field and find it very accurate with extremely good satellite reception ( little D's appear on satellite bars indicating WAAS reception )It will hold 5000 geocaches and the paperless feature is great...the page button triggers a scroll making it a snap to change screens or log caches. I find it far easier using the button input then the touch screen on our Oregon 450. The case seems solid and fits the hand well. I use Sony Eneloop 2500 NIMH rechargeable batteries and get approx 12 hours of constant use and don't have to calibrate the compass after each battery change. The screen is very bright and most views can be customized.

PERFECT FOR MOTORCYCLE
Pros: birdseye satellite imagery, size, usability. Cons: price, but i find all of these expensive. basecamp
It's a good unit for city navigating. Used in NYC and in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Needs maps, but it works great. You can set it up for your own personal tastes pretty easily. The Birdseye Satellite Imagery is a must! Great for trail rides. Used it to mark waypoints etc. The screen is a bit small if you're using it to navigate, but if you're using it as a waypoint and compass device, it's perfect. I find the other units a bit too large and cumbersome. This one is nice and portable. You really don't need more than that because if you're riding trails on a bike you need to be focused on riding. Two must have accessories: Get the power cable and wire it to your battery. Alkaline batteries disappear in a day, and although rechargeable NimH are fine if you're on a rental bike, or a short trip, any long distances you'll be wanting full power to your backlight so you can read it clearly in full sunlight. Second, get a locking mount! I got a RAM mount, and first crash it got throw off the bike. The GPS disappear into water, and I never saw it again. I should've taped it, or rubber banded it down, but alas I did not. I'll order another one, but I'm gonna regret not having that Blackfriday deal again. The only real cons are the price (which is high when not on sale) and Garmin Basecamp. Google Earth kicks it out of the park. Basecamp feels like old Windows software. It's counter-intuitive and a bit ugly. You can use Google Earth and convert the maps with some free online software like GPS Visualizer. Found this to be adequate. Also the difference between Tracks and Routes is a bit confusing...I found tracks to be more useable for what I wanted to do. Love the device.

GREAT HANDHELD GPSR!
Pros: paperless geocaching mfr. support nice styling Cons: none
This is my third Garmin GPSMap Series handheld receiver. My first two (GPSMAP 60C and GPSMap 60CX) are still working perfectly after many years of hard geocaching service, but they are starting to show some wear on the keys. I upgraded to the GPSMap 62S primarily because it is the new, improved version of my previous unit(s) and because I really wanted the "paperless" geocaching feature. I haven't used the unit much yet, but I fully expect that it will give me many years of faithful service just as its predecessors did.

GREAT UNIT WITH KLUTZY DATA MANAGEMENT
Pros: receiver, compass, display. Cons: waypoint and track management, screen navigation
The receiver is sensitive and quick to lock. The screen is crisp and clear. The compass is a snap to use. If you need to deal with a lot of waypoints or tracks, data management is a cumbersome downgrade from older Garmin models, such as the Map76 models, or even the very dated GPS III+. For example, there is no way to display waypoints alphabetically, and stepping down the list doesn't even "page" like older units. Changing basic settings usually requires changing screens rather than a simple, context sensitive click of the Menu key. The find "keyboard" is slow and tedious. If finding your truck, a few waypoints, or some Geocaches is your thing, this could be the unit for you. It's useless for managing three or four hundred waypoints, on a big or multiple properties.

GPSMAP 62S REVIEW
Pros: quick, accurate, battery time pretty good Cons: menu system, map detail
Replaced a 60CSx with the 62S. Overall, a pretty good GPS. I use it in the field as well as on the road as well. I don't like the way it prints the road maps on the screen. Doesn't always show road names like the 60CSx did. I don't know if it is the newer map or the GPS itself. It acquires satelites quickly. Waypoints are pretty accurate. Battery time has been good.
GPS City did a good job on getting it to me on time. Their price was great too. So good in fact that I think they may have goofed up. Either way, I would recomment GPS City to a friend.

GARMIN GPSMAP 62S
Pros: fast, easy to use, very sensitive and accurate Cons: non that i can find
I upgraded from an etrex venture HC to this. I use my GPS for riding a dual-sport bike on the back-roads of Colorado, I do not geo cache so cannot review on that. I think the 62s is great, it finds the sat. very quickly, and is a big improvement over my 3 y.o. etrex, so far it has been easy to use, I downloaded topo map info for Co. and the detail is fantastic! Being winter I have not used this for riding, just hiking and driving and I've had no problems with it, the squeaky on button I can live with.

BIG STEP SIDEWAYS
Pros: similar feel to older unit Cons: poor software implementation
I replaced a 60CSx due to case damage on the old unit. Pros: finds satellites quickly, similar feel to older unit, paperless caching Cons: no apparent way to read cache info without hitting "GO", cache names appear on top of compass and trip computer pages even when not after said cache (annoying), geocache/waypoint compass page on 60s was much friendlier, have to search for means to "Found" cache since it is not on the compass type pages, cannot change/modify coordinates on a cache or waypoint directly (or I have not found a way, yet), What's up with two pointers on compass page, anyway? Trip computer page has too small of compass pointer. Compass page has geocache counter when it really needs a "Found" button (who cares about the totals at that point!) Profiles somewhat make sense in concept, but are incredibly unclear (typical Garmin)

NEWER, BUT...
Pros: easy to use, same look and feel, better screen Cons: usage sometime confusing
I'm coming from the GPSMap 60CSx and bought the GPSMap 62s cause my old one was destroyed in an mountainbike downhill crash. The Device looks very good, screen is much better than the old one. Buttons are nearly the same, bike mount system is much better than the old, see although my rating for the Garmin Bike Mount. Usage is from time to time really hard, especially when it comes to tracks (although the tracks memory is huge) cause I didn't find a way to show all tracks I have on my device in my maps. I can change from one track to the other, but this is much more effort than I had before. The rest is really perfect - simply a Garmin.

GOOD GPS - HAPPY WITH IT MOSTLY
Pros: big easy to read text Cons: screen display not crystal clear
I used to have a 60CSX but I lost it :-( This is my replacement and for the most part it is very good. I have created a custom profile with my setting that I liked from my old 60 and for the most part it works very well.
Pros - love the paperless geocaching and the easy to read large text (unlike my wife's Delorme which has tiny text)
Cons - The display doesn't seem to be as crisp and clear as my old 60, but its not too bad. Also, can't seem to edit geocache waypoints as easily as I could on my 60... perhaps I'll figure it out?
The user interface definitely takes a bit of getting used to, but I am sure I'll get there. Overall however, I do like it and enjoy using it.

GREAT GEOCACHING GPS
Pros: lots of great features. still finding more. Cons: map redraw part screen only
Received as a gift from my family for my 65th birthday. In general I think the Garmin 62s is a great next step up from the 60 I had before. Nice features with a bit of a learning curve but it didn't take long to be comfortable with it.
I just use it for Geocaching. The only problem so far is the map screen when searching for a geocache. The map is only partly drawn with the bottom portion being white. At times only about 10 % of the map is showing with the rest just showing white. This occurs while using the GPS while driving to the location. When you arrive and start walking the map is able to fill the screen.

GOOD REPLACEMENT FOR MY GPSMAP76S
Pros: ease of use Cons: none yet
I bought the 76s many years ago and found it not sensitive enough to use many places here in Alaska due to terrain and tree canopy. This left me very frustrated and often just returned to my paper maps. The 62s works well under these conditions and now I am very happy. I found a feature that I was previously unaware the will be very helpful in my work as a photographer. It will predict the sun and moon position for future dates. When scouting for photos, I will then know when the sun will be at the correct angle

GPSMAP 62S
This is my first GPS so I have nothing to compare with as other reviewers have done. I am impressed but have to work on getting it all figured out. It seems to want to eat batteries. I am not sure if that is a function of the back light, which I have turned down or maybe having the Topo canada information for my province on there as well. I won't take that off if it is the case as the contours make all the difference. I will carry an extra set or two of batteries when I go out.

GOOD TO A POINT, BUT 1 BUG I HATE
Pros: paperless and good map rendering Cons: can't reset the odometer
I wanted to go truly Paperless and move up from my eTrex Vista HCX. This was a good price so I bought it and moved up. The day it arrived Garmin released the new etrex 10, 20, 30 series. It is hard to believe that Garmin would allow 1 bug in this model that they can not fix that does not exist in a years old etrex Vista. You can not reset the Odometer on this model. You can reset the Trip Odometer but not the Odometer. I use the odometer for every caching trip I do and never had a problem prior to this. I have found a "work around" but not tried it because in involves resetting the whole unit. By doing this then you have to set the unit up as if you just bought it. This isn't what I would call an acceptable fix.
The 62S isn't locking on as fast as my eTrex either.
I have not had the "squeaking" that others have talked about so far.
So far I am happy with many of the features on the 62S like better mapping display. The one thing that did surprise me was on my 2 gb micro chip I have several maps that I use depending on where I am in the world. In the eTrex one can only have one gmapsupp file active at one time, so I rename them gmapsupp.old spain or .old caribbean and in the 62 S you can see each of these maps no problem and make them active without dropping everything at the end. I find this a great addition.
I'll be honest that right now I am saying should I return it and wait for the eTrex 30 and see if the Odometer bug has been fixed?
I will do some more research on the 62S and see what happens.
I am remaining neutral at this point because for me the odometer problem is a big one for me.

FOR GEOLOGISTS
As with the 60csx is excellent for work in rainforest and gullies. Doesn't download tracks and waypoints using DNR Garmin or Garfile freeware as did its predecessor the 60csx which is a real nuisance. The lousy Garmin file system to find things and to do things seems to have been improved a bit, but not yet at Magellan Optio standards. Access to the keyboard and the keyboard have been improved so note taking is easier. If Garmin could only organise a logical file system like Magellan then 4 if downloadable to Mapinfo or Arcview using garfile or DNR Garmin then 5 as Magellan is uselss in rain forest.

Pros: fast satellite lock, geocache dash, form factor Cons: none that i have experienced
I also have a DeLorme PN-60w w/SPOT. IMO, the 62s is hands down the better of the two, specifically for geocaching. satellite lock-on and speed are fantastic. viewing in any light is clear and glare-free. the geocache dashboard on the map screen makes zeroing in on the cache ridiculously easy. Having the Dakota-based software and the ruggedness of he 60csx-based form factor is really the best of both worlds for me.

NICE UPGRADE
This device is a nice step up from the 60 series Garmin handheld. Acquisition of signal is good as is the accuracy of the instrument. The ability to have cache data on the device is a plus. It is interesting that there is lack of convention for the geocache icons. Obviously this does not effect the usefulness of the device, more a cosmetic glitch. There is a "work around" to set custom icons, but a real pain to accomplish.

VERY SOLID GEOCACHING PLATFORM
Pros: fast to acquire lock, accurate, paperless Cons: manual, usb pwr, mapsource features, map handling
Having used the 60Cx since it came out, the 62S is a nice step forward. the support for paperless caching and increased GPX files from 1000 waypoints to 5000 waypoints is great as is the increased speed of the unit when searching or moving through maps. Some pain points from the original 60Cx are as follows: - No paper manual or CD was a bit confusing until I plugged the unit into my computer and found that they had put documentation electronically on the unit itself. - No default high-contrast map view that can be easily seen in daylight without the back light on. Almost all the screens seem to assume that the back light is on, even in full daylight to read. - When you connect it to a USB Power cable in your car or computer, it always restarts. Very much a pain! When connected to a computer it always stays in "usb" mode whereas previous versions would let you still use the GPS as long as you weren't transferring files to it. - When downloading multiple different mapsets covering the same area, there is no way to select which maps you want to display at any given time unless you know the 'map trick' of loading only a single mapset, then renaming it on the USB filesystem. - Would be nice to support multiple GPX files for when you want to have more than 5000 waypoints available (ie. when traveling). There is certainly the room on the system for it... - Profiles are a neat idea, but it's annoying that within a profile that different app components and options are not available. Everything should be supported! - Mapsource integration is poor. Not only map problems as listed above, but there is no way to retrieve the GPX files from within Mapsource and I need to use another program. - Should ship with a lanyard to go with the clip. - have to remove the carrying clip in order to fit into RAM cradle and can't plug in power before you put it into the cradle.

GPSMAP 62S
Pros: easy menu, paperless geocaching. Cons: none found yet.
I am totally happy with it. After a very short familiarization period the menu system is actually easier to work than the 60 and the screen is much easier to see than the Colorado or Oregon, both in the car and outdoors. This gpsr would be the reason for geocachers to advance from their trusty Map60s. Unit-to-unit transfer of geocache pages includes the full cache page, not just the waypoint.

BEST OFF ROAD GPS
Pros: fast loading and zooming Cons: no ram mount yet or dedicated power supply input
I use it on my Dual Sport Bike and its perfect, excellent loading and zooming speed, light years ahead from my 2 previous generation Etrex. I chose this GPS over the ZUMO models because they are not tough built, their mounting harness are a bit flimsy. The main problem I have today is that RAM or anyone else makes a dedicated mount cradle for motorcyle use, they will be coming out with one in December, but not now. Also my other concern is that it doesn't have a dedicated power supply input, it uses the regular mini USB input which I hope doesn't give away with the vibration.

EXCELLENT OVERALL
Pros: no more printouts for geocaching Cons: none so far
Bought this as a geocaching replacement for my trusty 60C. The paperless geocaching ability alone is worth the price for me. I've uploaded over 5,000 geocaches to it (locations, hints, past logs) and barely dented the internal memory. Initally, I didn't like the scroll bar selection system, but now that I'm used to it (~ 1 month) I love it. The reception and startup speed is incredible. My 60C was awesome, but this one is even better. Even under full thick canopy it still gets a great signal and is very accurate ! As some people have mentioned, my does have the 'squeak' (Just at the power button) but it doesn't seem that loud to me and I don't consider it an issue at all. Power consumption is good too. I get an entire days use out of two 1850 mAh NiMH batteries.

WORKS GOOD, BUT CASE SQUEAKS
works awesome... but the case squeaks when you press buttons.. quite loud, so don't use it near bird watching or for hunting while game is around.

WORKS GREAT
Pros: viewable in sunlight Cons: wish it had voice capability for driving on road.
I've had no issues with it so far it took some time to get used to the menu and not having touch screen like the my nuvi 1350. The unit is solid, no squeaks or internal component movement noise. I'm not sure how others found that they squeak especially 3 of them? It had just only major highways with the basemap but I put the North America 2011 map on a microsd and it works now like my nuvi with all the poi locations and detailed roads. I was considering the Oregon 450 against this one but this one will be more durable for quading and other outdoor activities than a touch screen. And I found the mounts will be out in December which is longer than I expected but here is the link. http://www.ram- mount.com/NewProducts/garmingpsmap62mounts/tabid/3306/Defaul t.aspx

WHAT I EXPECTED
Pros: colour screen, good in high tree coverage Cons: silly nit picky things that do not effect its use
I had only been introduced to geocaching for about a week when I decided I needed a unit of my own. I had been using a friends GPSMAPs 60 CSx so I thought this was the natural progression. While it is an improvement over the 60, they left off some small silly things that I found usueful. Scrolling features could be better. That being said, the unit is amazing!!!!
I tested the 62s, Oregon 450 and a Magellan all on a few caches and I found the 62s to be the most accurate in heavy tree coverage.
I did however find that after the software upgrade that I have lost a map. I have CT navigator 2010 and it only lists my Mexico map now ... despite the fact you can see all the roads in BC, Canada when the Mexico map is turned on ... hmmmm?
All in all, an excellent unit ... the Oregon software in a GPSMAPs case.

I LIKE IT
Pros: start up time is super fast Cons: still trying to find my world map
Well after finally getting my 62s I can say it is well worth the money! The time it takes to locate after a 200 mile trip is pretty amazing. I have been useing it in the woods in Haliburton with a full tree canopy and the antenna seems to always be on track. The memory is big enough for most mapping but I have already lost my world map somehow. Probably my fault though. The memory chips I find a little confusing because I thought you would be able to put more than one map program on a chip. I haven't had it that long so I think the more I use it the more I will figure the issues out. It does exceed my 60c and I am sure to put it to the test this winter both in the North and then in Costa Rica. The GPSCity delivery by the way was as usual excellent. Ordered it on Monday and received it Tuesday afternoon. How can you beat that?

BUILT GARMIN TOUGH
Pros: accuracy, accuracy, accuracy, Cons: poor user manuals included
I have had the GPSMAP 62s for about 1 month so far. I use it for geocaching and have found over 100 caches with it, in all weather, terrain and canopy conditions. I am really impressed with 3 main features Compared against my Colorado 300 1) The accuracy is just awesome, got me on average 5-10 meters closer to a geocache, then my C300 in overcast and canopy conditions 2) Screen clearness, 10 times better then my C300 in direct sunlight, nice and clear and bright 3) Battery usage. I run Rechargeable Energizer 2450 mAh batteries in both units. I set both units to full brightness, and back-light time out at 30 seconds, the 62s gave me about 4-5 extra hours of usage. The user interface is a learning curve, after a month I'm still learning features
On a side note, from day 1 my 62s did not have the infamous "click"

SQUEAKY CASE
Pros: paperless Cons: construction, inability to delete individual cache
Also had 3 of these before walking away from this unit, as all three squeaked and I didn't want to to a chance that there was something else wrong inside with the seals etc.
Great features, poor construction

GOOD GPSR, POOR QUALITY
Garmin has major production issues with this gps. It seems they cannot figure out how to make a case that is solid and does not squeak with the slightest pressure. The squeaking occurs easily, simply turning the gps on or off causes a loud and very noticeable squeaking. For a gps that is advertised as rugged, I hardly find this acceptable. Garmin has replaced my gps twice for the squeaking issues and every replacement has suffered the same demise. Is this thing really top of the line??
