NICE GPS
Pros: easy to use, easy to work with outside software. Cons: acquisition not as quick as the gps 60.
A very good mapping GPS. I use it for preliminary survey work and it gets me to the area very well. (If I need more accuracy, then the Trimble comes to work.) Works well under tree cover and at 5,000 feet in the airplane. The lock up problem is a minor inconvenience when aware of it.

WHERE DO I FIND THESE UPDATES?
I actually find these units very easy to use, but lately I have had several of them (we use them at work) get that sam line through the screen that everyone else seems to get. It freezes up on me completely.
The above review says to get updates. I wen to the Garmin website and downloaded the 76S updates to my computer, but when I tried to upload them I was told that there are no updates available for this unit! Did I go to the wrong place? And do I just turn off the WAAS on the unit? I need help!

Go online and get the latest updates for your unit and turn off WAAS.
Without going into a lot of technical detail, there is a rogue satellite that does not play well with the WAAS system. The latest unit software should take care of the problem.
The problem only affects the older monochrome displays.

VERTICAL LINE ON SCREEN
I've had mine for 13 months now, and unfortunately out of warranty. The first month I purchased it, I had the single vertical line like the others, on the left side of the screen. Taking the batteries out and putting them back in solving that problem. Now it's 12 months later, and I cannot for the life of me correct the same problem! I've switched the batteries twice! The line comes up just as the sattelites are being acquired. Very frustrating and disappointing.

I would give the GPSMAP 76 five stars except that I just experienced exactly what Dwight experience on my last outing with the vertical line that only goes away by removing the batteries. I get a single vertical line down an otherwise blank screen after the GPS successfully acquires satellites. I did indentify a contributing factor. My GPSMAP 76 is mounted in my boat with a factory mount and 12-volt wiring harness. I first hooked it up three months ago and have been using it all summer with no problems. Then the problem above occurred. I found that when I disconnected the power supply, pulled the AA batteries to clear the problem, then powered back up on the AA batteries, the problem did not return. The moment I tried the external power cable, the problem reoccurred. Could this be a power overload defense? I have not changed anything with the boat's electrical system. I saw the problem reappear once with the engine running and once with the engine off.

GPS MAP76
I have owned my map76 for 2 years now and must say that it works very well under most conditions. Over the past year however, I have been having problems with the unit "locking up" and giving me a blank screen with a vertical line running down the left side of the screen. The only way to unlock the unit is to remove the batteries and re-install them. This same problem is also being encountered by another user of the same type unit. Not sure what the problem is but it is most frustrating.

I found the key over the top of screen not an ideal configuration. The display screen was sometimes hard to read especially in bright light or poor light and there was water intrusion into the battery compartment and eventually into the unit itself. Replaced under warranty. It didnt seem to like being head down from the sky (would loose satelites and stop data reading until the unit reaquired satelites ) The GPSMAP unit and the charting were absolutely fantastic worked flawlessly . Being able to custonmise the information on the Nav route pages was great. It survived three months of hard dangerous coastal sailing for 1200 miles in the roaring 40's in a hobie 16. It survived a capsize in a gale, an end over end crash onto a 40 degee slope shingle ocean beach in 6 meter swells. Also survived an unexpected an unwanted encouter with a rocky foreshore after dusk strewn with large round car size boulders. This was just near Puyseger Point where there are not gale force winds for only 18 days per year. It snowed rained and hailed to the foreshores edge I couldnt get off for ten days. I had to custom make a wrist strap to hold the unit on my forearm and lost one GPSMAP76s ( replaced it with the GPSMAP76 and secured this via 2 means to my wrist ther after)Wouldve been nice to buy an OM piece of equipment to do this. I have just sold the GPSMAP 76 to upgrade to a colour screen for better readability. Contemplating another garmin unit as I think they are good units ( this will be my fifth garmin GPS ) But confess am seriously put off by the cost of the Blue chart costs for my next 10,000 sea miles.

while crossing a river to get to the moose we had shot during the fall hunting season our Garmin map 76 dropped into the water. we didn't know this until we were ready to to enter the actual kill site as a waypoint.this was the first time we had used our new gps so then ,after a successful moose hunt we had to go gps hunting.we found it several hundred feet down stream,on shore with its voyage clearly marked. It still performs like new.My 2 sons and I now have a garmin map 76 each and are considering upgrading to the Garmin map 76C. The product does everything it should..can it be programmed to carry a moose back to camp?
