AWESOME DEVICE
Pros: strong satellite signal and very accurate. Cons: a bit weird getting used to buttons at the top.
This is my first handheld GPS unit and I find it absolutely amazing (of course only once I bought the Ontario Topo maps that is as the included base map is useless). It is very quick to find the gps satellites and holds a strong signal even when walking through dense bush. It is very accurate when approaching waypoints from any direction and overall a joy to use. The menu system took a bit of playing with to learn, but works well now that I am more familiar with it. At first, I couldn't understand why all of the buttons were at the top of the screen instead of at the bottom until I mounted it in my ATV mount and found it makes it way easier to use when it is mounted.

GARMIN 78S WEST COAST
Pros: easy to use. Cons: maps are pricey
Loving it. How did I ever fish off shore without this unit? I feel safer now than I ever did before. Great fishing mode that shows all the detail I need for salmon and halibut. Its so easy to use and set up. I was in thick fog and this unit reall got me through it, safe and sound. This is my first GPS/plotter.

GPSMAP 78S
Pros: fast unit
The GPSMap 78 series does not read the Canadian current data properly from the BlueChart G2 cards. When you go to the West coast of Canada and search for current data in Canadian waters(US current stations work OK) it does not find the current data because it shows the current stations as tide stations with the tide icon. Both US and Candian stations show OK in HomePort. The Odometer data field can only be reset to 0 by doing a master unit reset, So they need to fix this

YET A GOOD GARMIN HAND-HELD
Pros: lightweight - good battery life - 3 axis compass Cons: not a big fan of buttons on top, but i'll adjust.
This is my 4th Garmin Hand-held GPS. The ability to quickly change profiles and 3 axis compass is great.
Like all units you have to spend time getting it customized to your needs.
I chose this one over the 62s simply because the power cable is the same as the one for my 60. I didn't like the usb power for the colorado 400i that I had. I found that the usb power connection was intermittant at best. (may have been the colorado unit itself)
Overall it is a very light unit. Great battery life. I use my GPS on the Water hiking and on snowmobile.
The 1.7Gb of internal and ability to add a 4Gb mSD card has given me the ability to have my Bluecharts Topo-maps and City Navigator along with some custom maps and still have ample storage for more.
I guess that my final evaluation will be made when I try it on my sled.

EXCELLENT MARINE/TRAVEL GPS
Pros: very sensitive, can have marine & road maps loaded Cons: no download to mapsource but can upload.
I purchased this unit (78s) as an update to my 76 CSx. I love the fact that with 1.7 gbyte of internal memory I can load all of NA streets onto the device and also have Bluechart G2 marine maps in the micro SD card slot. They can't both be active at the same time but it's very simple to change the active map in the menu. This means it's very easy to switch from the the water to the road on a trip with just one unit.
The fact that the compass can be used accurately in any orientation is a nice feature, especially since if I use it one my recumbent trike it will need to be essentially vertical.
Initially I couldn't figure out how to save a waypoint I had found (eg an address) but eventually discovered that once you find a waypoint, hit "menu" then select "review point" and hit "enter" and then hit "menu" again which will bring up "save as waypoint". This process is much simpler in all my other Garmin GPS's (eg. eTrex Legend, 76 CSx, Rino 530 HCx) which have both options (route to, or save) on the same page.
I kind of wish the unit had the standard USB power option (eg as found on the eTrex units) and it would be nice if it had the small, screw on clip mount (found on the eTrex and Rino) which make it really easy to snap securely onto a small belt clip for hiking.
I will likely continue to use the much smaller eTrex on my trike and for hiking.
Overall, this is a very nice unit which I will use extensively on my boat (Lake Huron) and for road trips with the car adapter (on order).

NOT WORTH CHANGING FRON 76CSX
Pros: quick loading of maps, custon map capability Cons: transferred tracks only available in track manager
Some changes are good, fast fix, good color screen, quick loading of maps. Some are bad, transferred tracks are not available in main map window, you must go to the track manager. very cumbersome. Especially do not like the fact that when connected to a computer, you cannot access anything on the unit. It goes to mass storage device mode.

WORTH THE UPGRADE
Pros: new data fields, signal strength, interface Cons: elevation sensor, can't use mapsource, battery cov
Bought as an upgrade to 76cs. Use GPS for GIS data collection. Chose 78s over 62 due to floating feature and rounded corners of unit vs antenna of the 62 which may catch when storing in pack etc.
Improved signal strength under canopy cover. WAIS make a huge difference in maintaining accuracy level. Clear daylight screen. Zoom level at 80m = 76cs zoom at 50m. Unit has a smaller foot print in width than 76cs. Many new data fields. Like the point average feature for data collection for GIS projects.
You need to take a day to find out all the different settings. Map detail now has many levels of options to specify. Similar to declutter option in 76cs.
Comparing the accuracy of the units. Over 1.5 km only 8m difference. The first 20m seems to be calibrating sensors then after that details accurate. Speed sensor is within 1km of auto. Like the dashboards.
Elevation sensor is not accurate even after manual calibration. Mentioned in other forums.
Battery compartment cover is combersome to lock into place. Be sure it is tightly closed before exposing to water.
Can not use mapsource to download saved tracks and waypoints. Would not download waypoints and only current tracklog was downloaded not saved tracks. Garmin support indicates you have to use Basecamp. Not a big fan of basecamp. You can save to gdb and open in mapsource though.
Would like to see lowercase added to + - buttons for easier data entry rather than navigating to the shift key. Otherwise like the + - for data entry. Like the ribbon interface to pages.
Managing tracks is now in 2 places. Setup and track mgr. Wish it was in one place like 76cs. To turn track off it is in setup. Saving etc is in track mgr. I turn tracks on/off when collecting GIS data so it is a pain to have it in 2 places.
Has quick startup and maintains signal under cover. New 3 axis compass is great. Wish you could delay the heading update so it would reflect a real compass dampened effect.
Birdseye displays okay for the small screen.

BEST BY FAR!
I owned the gpsmap 76csx and I gave that one away to a friend to make room for this great model. Not that the other one was bad,(I put over 30K miles on it)! I just wanted to upgrade to a newer one. It is the same as the other one but the chip is more sensitive. I recommend this to anyone who likes or owns the 76 series!
