MEETS OR EXCEEDS ALL MY EXPECTATIONS!

Pros: very reliable, many very useful features.
Cons: no usb cable, volume distorts above 70%.

I wanted a GPS with 4.3" size, spoken street names and lane assist...that's it. I didn't want to waste money for a bluetooth or an MP3 player, I already own those.

After researching for a month, I settled on the Nuvi 1350 as the right model for me. Downloading the map update required paying close attention to detail, and took some time, it was straight-forward, and went without incident.

The map isn't perfect, as I found the unit wanted me to carry on down an embankment of a dead-end street, but I didn't expect perfection.

My first challenge was a drive from Nova Scotia to Ottawa, through some US states and Quebec, and the unit worked excellently. The unit displays speed limits while in the US, which I found invaluable when driving through small towns where the speed limit can be quite low (20mph) in some places. The lane assist worked flawlessly, and is invaluable when navigating big cities like Montreal and Ottawa. You get lots of notice in advance when you need to stay right or left, and and icon in the upper left corner graphically displays which lane you need to be in. Boy did I depend on this feature while driving through Montreal. The display automatically switches to a low-light display at dusk so it doesn't interfere with night-visibility.

I also found the eco-route and gas mileage log features great for tracking costs and calculating mileage, which will be very handy for estimating travel costs on future trips.

I've owned this unit for a year & a half now, and am still discovering great features, like being able to create my own categories for storing POI in my favorites folder. That allows me to more quickly find the POI I frequent, especially those I've "created" myself. There's also a large variety of icons you can use to make pre-programmed or your own POI's stand out more clearly on the map.

I continue to use my GPS on routine trips because it provides Distance to Destination and ETA (estimated time of arrival) information enroute. That comes in handy when the Missus wants to know when you're gonna be home.

I did have one major malfunction. The unit powers up automatically when you start the car. I did this while parked in an underground garage, and when I emerged from underground, the unit did not properly get its satellite bearings. It vehemently directed me to turn right and plunge into the Ottawa River. A quick power-down and reboot solved the problem.

There are a couple things that are lacking with the 1350: first, a USB cable should come with this unit, but it doesn't. Fortunately, I had a cable for my cell phone that worked...otherwise, I would have had to buy one for $20. Second, this unit only permits one waypoint. The use of a waypoint is handy if you want to force the unit to plot a route based on your own criteria. I just found the limit of a single waypoint to be a little limiting.

Good news though, if you want to overcome these short- comings, you simply need to upgrade to the Nuvi 1450.

My only regret is that I didn't get the 1350LM version with Lifetime Map Updates. Now I'll have to part with another $95 to get it seperately, whereas it usually only costs an extra $50 to get the LM version up front.

WELL TESTED ON US HOLIDAY

Pros: easy to use, very accurate
Cons: alpha keyboard a little awkward

I am on my second Garmin hand held GPS for geocaching so you can tell that I am already impressed with Garmin technology. I live in a rural area so was not able to really test the unit this week in Orlando, FL where our family is vacationing. It did take awhile to initially acquire satellites because it thought it was still on Vancouver Island. However, after that it has performed very well even with two backseat drivers!

WHY DID I WAIT?

Pros: ease of use, large display, gpscity's website
Cons: none

Within ten days of buying this unit, I have used it in Texas, Louisiana, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachuttes, California, and of course here in Alberta. I used to print maps before each trip - no more maps for me! The unit was super easy to use and brought me exactly to every location. Being a novice I was able to stick-click-and go!

DECENT GPS

I have used my GPS on a few longer trips and it has been fairly accurate. I did have to exchange the first one I purchased within a week because it would shut off for no reason and I couldn't get it to come back on. Since exchanging it, I have not had the same problem.

NUVI 1350

Pros: ease of use and size
Cons: none

Not sure what Jane is doing but you can set it for Canada. This is my 3rd Garmin and I am very pleased with it. Previous unit was the Nuvi 5000 at over 3 times the price but not half as good as this unit. Very easy to use and so small.

GREAT NAVIGATOR, BUT PICTURE VIEWER DOESN'T WORK

We bought the Nuvi 1350 last month for a road trip an loved it. It navigated quickly and accurately. However it is missing a decent pocket manual and the online manual isn't much better.

I added a MicroSD memory chip and copied a couple of pictures to it. When I tried to see the pictures in the Picture Viewer I get the thumbnails of the pictures, get a black screen when I select one of the pictures.

NUVI 1350

Fast satellite aquisition. Fast route recalculation. Easily fits in shirt pocket. Screen visible even in sunlight. Doesn't have all the bells and whistles of more expensive units, but is an exellent navigator.

NUVI 1350

Pros: compact, easy to use
Cons: slow to start up

This is my first GPS and the overall performance seems very good. I wish you didnt have to punch the city everytime to enter an address. It should default to a your local city. The unit is very compact and that is a great feature. Seems a littly slow to start up, could be from me not knowing if the other units are slower. Takes about 25 seconds to get to the "I agree" icon. They put the spell name icon with the points of interest icon, I would have prefered the address icon next to the spell name icon, buts thats my preference, this could be a norm with GPS. The picture viewer is very good and has other features that come in handy, example, calculator, units conversion, eco route, etc, etc. The pedestrian feature seems very good. it shows you a route but doesnt speak names.

Overall rating is very good. Mike Windsor,Ontario, Canada
