GOOD VALUE
Pros: price, bluetooth, lifetime map updates Cons: bizarre route suggestions, traffic feature
For the price, this unit is fine. It can get you where you need to go, though not always by the most direct or quickest route. For routes I travel frequently, I have found the directions very strange. The traffic feature is also pretty worthless (at least in Ottawa). It consistently announces "Traffic ahead" when there isn't a car in sight, and ignores gridlock. Not sure how often the traffic is updated, but clearly not very often. If it is adjusting routes based on traffic, then I really worry. This may work better in larger cities. Not sure. I do really like the bluetooth, which works flawlessly and is alone worth the price of admission. Don't get a unit without bluetooth, especially with increasing number of jurisdictions that ban hand-held cell phone use.

Thanks GPS CITY CANADA for shipping the unit so fast, The Garmin Nuvi 1390 has good maps and good graphics. The audio, however, is very poor quality and hard to understand some street names were not pronounced correctly. I used it in Montreal for one weekend and got lost a few times.

GOOD LITTLE UNIT
Pros: slim, good screen size, good coverage Cons: screen customization
It works! Although I've only used it for a couple trips, it worked just fine. Would be nice to be able to customize the screen layout a little more - standard option settings are available, but for example, I don't want to see 'Elevation' and cannot simply turn it off. But hey, it works.

MONEY WELL SPENT
Pros: user friendly!!! Cons: still looking
we bought this item for our trip to colorado. what a treat. we had a tom tom earlier and would love to give it to any one that complains about this unit. we too found it very user friendly and even tho sometimes it maybe took routes we would not have, i found that if i would switch between fastest and shortest route that it would then agree with the general direction we had expected to be headed. realizing from other reviews that it's memory was small we just bought a 8gb from 'the source' for $10. and gave ourselves lots of time for the maps update and we were good to go. there was the new west area of edmonton that didn't make the update but i would expect those changes to take time to make it to garmin's update, that happens, life goes on and... nobody died as a result. i think the one thing i would see as an improvement would be if it had a compass pointer option instead of simply the vague directional indicators. even if it would have as it's options N NNE NE ENE E etc. we have a lot of winding roads here and so that detail would be nice or at least an option between the two. the windshield mount is also much better than the tom tom was. good job garmin and good price.

PHONE BOOKACCESS
I bought this GPS unit at a large box store and could not access the phone book either. Here is how I get it to work. Turn "OFF" the bluetooth on your phone, then turn "ON" the NUVI 1390LTM. You get a message that says" can not connect to the bluetooth device. Press OK the turn on the bluetooth icon on the phone to connect. Make sure you have properly paired the phone to the GPS priot to doing this. Works every time foe me.

EASY TO SET UP AND USE
Pros: traffic, lifetime maps, traffic camera locations! Cons: not enough memory (evidently)
Pretty easy to set up. However, initial downloading of updated map data was slow, and the deault configuration doesn't have enough memory for the full US & Canada set.So. wasted time downloading only to find out it doesn't fit and have to choose a smaller set (lower 48 states) and download that.
Traffic feature is helpful and fairly intuitive, and traffic camera locations as POIs (subscription service) is very cool.

Got this in a sale, and really pleased with having just enough information. I have had seveal and this seems to be a progressor to the next generation. GOOD AND BAD..
Pros: great display, lane assist is cool and easy to use Cons: not enough memory for na maps when updated...
We really like the features in this GPS. The display is crisp, the lane assist is very helpful, it is easy to program and to pull up regular destinations.
the traffic reports are good, we are getting used to that feature though we have not really explored how to use that knowledge to speed up our trip.
Downside: BIG Downside is that it does not have enough memory to load all North American maps. What is that about? I went to update the maps, (we have lifetime maps, a feature we wanted) and found out that we had to be selective on the areas we could load. so I chose Canada and the northern states. Pain in the behind as we also travel to the southern US and I am going to have to load the southern US separately when we do that (and delete Canada to do that..) Lifetime maps are great, but lack of memory makes this unit less than desirable.
If we had our choice we would look for a model that has the exact same features but actually has enough memory to Load the whole set of maps. Bad BAD problem with this unit.

Pros: line change, trafic Cons: lack of features in canada
I find it a bit slow to react. It looks like too much information to digest at once. I don't see often of the nice picture for the line change in the Montréal area. I hope it gets better in the US. It still make me go across the neighbourhoods instead if staying on the big roads. Search by spelling is still terrible. Still no speed limit in Canada(US Only). Trafic is a nice feature. Line change is also great.

GOOD PRODUCT
Cons: rear power connector
Works well for the price. A bit more thought in how it deals with addresses would be useful. Eg. It won't accept London Lane - but wants London Ln and simply says no results instead of perhaps being smart enough to make a guess and give you the available choices. The rear power socket, with the heavy cable supplied is going to break - very flomsy.

WORTHLESS PIECE OF JUNK
Took it out of the box, registered it and tried to update maps per instructions, but I received an error message that there was insuffient space for the maps(?!). Took it outside so it could find satellites, and made first attempt to navigate, and got error message that "No map data available". Put it on PC and found that 1.75 GB of 2GB storage was full, so the maps sems to be on there (North American map package is approx 1.4 GB), but the device can't find them. Emailed "Support" with the problem, their suggested "solution"is to "delete voice, text and help files that you do not need" and try to download again. How would I know what I "need"? Garmin presumably put the files on there for a reason, and even assuming I could somehow free up the 1.15GB in storage needed to accomodate the map files (assuming that space is the problem, which seems unlikely), I'm then permanently deprived of those files I deleted, because no space. Sending this thing back, and will try out a competing product.

1390 LMT
Pros: good satellite acquisition. clear voice Cons: no search feature in phone book
1390 LMT is my first ever GPS, a bought about a week agao, before buying my car. Its quite easy to set up and user friendly. Satellite acquisition is very good, in no time you are ready to go. I am new in Toronto and not at all familiar with roads/routes, I bought my first car here from Mississauga yesterday and safely reached home in East York relying only on this GPS.
Setting a blue tooth connection is easy if you turn on BT on Cell phone before turning on the GPS. If you turn on GPS before turning on BT on cell you cant get a connection.
Once you are connected with BT, you can access your complete phonebook, but without the search option, meaning you have to scroll down to the desired name/number. I have like 800+ contacts in my phonebook so if I have to call someone with his name starting with "Z", I'll have to scroll down to 800th number, and that is going to be a real pain.

1390LMT VS. 255 NUVI
Pros: lane assist, easy to use Cons: too many map errors compared to older model
I've owned a 255 Nuvi for about 3 years and it's been great with the exception of a few minor errors from time to time. Bought a new 1390LMT a couple of months and immediately did a new map update. Here are some issues I've run into. After passing I-70 while driving on I-465 around Indianopolis, the 1390 announced I was driving on I-70. Again, while 5 miles north of I-69 on Hwy 37 it thought I was on I-69 complete with the exit number. Today, it mapped a route thru Tennessee some 25 miles longer than it should have. There have been other such instances. These kind of errors never happens with the 255m and they could really confuse someone who had no knowledge of the area or roads they are driving. And yes, I have all the settings selected correctly, such as faster time and no avoidances, etc. it appears my 1390 maps are inferior to my 3 year old 255 Nuvi maps. Come on Garmin, you're too good for that.

Best gps i've used so far. I've used a tom-tom which was advertised with text to speech. It proved to be useless. Garmin however is really reliable specially in turn by turn situation. I also vouch for the 2D map with real direction. Unlike tom-tom which only shows true north. Only kink is the 3D maps is too skewed. I wish elevation could be adjusted to become more realistic. The phone book does always appear when you connect via bluetooth. Lane assist is fantastic

GOOD BUT NOT PERFECT GPS
Pros: generally good navigation, excellent screen Cons: update process buggy
I purchased this Garmin product to replace an older GPS which had served us quite well for the past 4 years. The older device still works but it lacks newer features like lane guidance and hands free cellphone support. I gave the older product to my daughter who finds it all she needs to get around in downtown Montreal. I have just taken the new GPS on a vacation to Nova Scotia and while it performed adequately I did have some concerns. At one point I selected an address on Cape Breton Island for a long drive from the Annapolis Valley which produced a persistent chorus of "Recalculating, recalculating,recalculating,....." until it was turned off. It did accept and ultimately find this spot later. At another point it failed to find an address on a major road near Halifax. I did not find the lane guidance feature particularly helpful. The built in Navi unit in my wife's Honda CRV is much better in that it displays a full diagram of the lanes at an approaching exit in plenty of time to make quick but safe changes. I had some trouble getting the automatic changes from day to night modes to work. Finally, I tried to update the maps prior to our departure using my MacBook with Safari but I could not even register the GPS, never mind an update. Things work much more smoothly with Firefox for Mac but the update finally failed for no apparent reason after following all instructions very carefully. I have not yet had time to get back to this chore. One has to wonder how useful lifetime updates will be in the longer term. Possibly not worth the extra cost. Overall, the performance was 8/10, not quite as good as I had hoped but not bad.

EXCELLENT
Pros: speed, size, options, lifetime traffic and maps
I had a Magellan for four years and when it broke I purchased this. Really incredible features, very small and compact yet with a large screen, finds a signal incredibly fast, and the readout that gives speed is great when you exceed the limit because your speed turns red.

REPLACEMENT FOR STOLEN 1490
Cons: garmin ancillary software/updates poor
I got this to replace stolen 1490. Fits better on dash in my smaller car, really don't notice any different from 1490. I like the 1390/1490 units, they work fine for me.
