MY FIRST GARMIN FOR MY AUTOMOBILE . . .
Pros: stable, viewing upcoming junctions and turns Cons: no pois displayed while driving
I'm not new to GPS - I bought a Garmin eTrex Legend when they first came out about 10 years ago, I have a Garmin Edge 800 for my bicycle. However, for the past 7 years I have always had TomTom for my car GPS because I preferred the look and feel of their software and user interface. I decided to switch to Garmin because the last two TomToms had problems with freezing on start-up. No such problems with the Garmin Nuvi 50LM - it's very stable and after a dozen or so uses I've no problems at all with software or hardware.
In comparing the TomTom software to Garmin . . . I really like the Garmin feature of going into the split screen mode for upcoming junctions and turns, and the constant preview in the upper-left corner that gives distance and proper lane choices for upcoming junctions. This is something my TomToms lacked and I consider a very important feature for reasons of safety. The one thing I liked better about the TomTom software is they allow you to display POIs on the map as you are driving, and have a filter that gives you control over which types of POIs to display (i.e. hospitals, gas stations, etc.). Garmin obviously has this information available, since they let you use POIs to determine destinations, but they don't allow you to display them while driving. Overall, I like the Garmin better and will probably be sticking with them for a while, and I'm looking forward to the lifetime map updates that I never had with TomTom.
Note: One thing I'd like to see both Garmin and TomTom do a better job with - Rest Areas on Interstates. I don't understand why they are ignored because they are a very important thing to know about when taking long trips.

GARMIN NUVI 50LM
This is my second Garmin and I really like the 5 in. screen. It is very user friendly unlike some found in luxury cars. In my opinion Garmin is the best!
