In spite of some great features, the Nuvi 680 is a disappointment for $700.00 There is one unchangeable feature than can not be defeated. In my opinion, the “Auto-Zoom” feature kills this product. As you approach an intersection, without warning the 680 will “Auto-Zoom” or magnify the view significantly. The result is complete loss of situational awareness at a most critical time. Sort of like someone flips the map upside down when you most need it! According to Garmin this feature is locked as is, and can’t be user changed or defeated. For that reason alone, I’d not buy the unit again. The rest of the features are really good. The screen is great, the touch screen function is great. I love having all the maps “on board”. The MSN traffic and weather is lousy and typically lags significantly from real time events. The accuracy is about as good as flipping a coin. A clear message to send to Garmin would be to focus on great navigation functionality and if I want a picture viewer, I’ll buy one, if I want a music box, I’ll buy an iPod. This is a good and simple “road warrior” style GPS to use. If you are looking for deep technical features (ie: destination distance or waypoint entry), this isn’t the one to go for.

I'M VERY IMPRESSED
The Nuvi 680 has come a long way from the units that first came out, back when the screen was black and white and all you got was the "bread crumb" trail. This unit has some neat features (mp3 player, address book, blue tooth phone, etc). The large screen makes it easy to follow along (except for the tiny area map scale info) and makes it look like a miniature plasma tv. Its really easy to punch in GPS coordinates and find a place you haven't been to. I have no idea how to do this on my Garmin 60CS, Garmin V, Gecko, or my Foretrex 101. The 680 starts up and gets bearings pretty fast too. However, my major complaint is that the keypad really sucks. Its not in the traditional typewriter format that we're used to on smart phones and PDAs. The letters just go from left to right and it takes awhile to find the letter you're looking for. The mp3 player is ok but if you own an ipod, like I do, it won't play ipod formated music, only mp3 (I hope they fix this!). Samething with the picture viewer. It only opens JPG pics. Since you can view pictures, why not add on a digital camera? The MSN feature is nice but kind of odd. Knowing the weather is definitely a must, but why do I need to know movie listings? Also, it only works around major cities. I live in the boondocks and its useless to me here - I know where both movie theatres are in my town. One last thing I would like Garmin to change is that on the map screen, you get "speed" and "driving" direction data. It would be great if you could change what kind of data (ETA, distance to destination, time to destination etc) you get on the map screen, like you can on other Garmin models. You can't do this on the 680. All in all, the 680 is a very nice package and like all Garmin units its very easy to use but a bit pricy.

MSN DIRECT NOT SO GREAT IN CANADA
Gps route calculating is good fast and easy. Same bugs as nuvi 660 and other products I'm sure, such as streets have to be written exactly as in software(ave,bld,crescent...) It says no matches found. So if I didn't now that Stuart street was actually Ave Stuart. It won't correct me and find it. Msn direct is not so hot. I'm near Montreal. Receiving signal but not accurate information. Traffic not working at all. Nearby weather forecasts not accurate (rain in lasalle and sunny in Montreal, Lasalle is on the island of Montreal). Forget about gas price notifications around here but if you want to travel across the border to Vermont your in luck. Movie times and theatres are there but not sure if times are correct. I Haven't compared them to "Cinemaclock" on net yet. Missing one of the major three theatres I go to. (Carrefour Angrignon Mall). All garmin has to say is "there's no coverage in your area." Good thing my first year is free. Hopefully in near future problems will be fixed for Canadian consumers. We would really appreciate it, Thankyou.
