ITALY GPS NOT SO GOOD

The Nuvi 775t has some advantages over older models but using it in Italy recently was frustrating. It often takes the longer and much more complicated route. We were taken down roads too small for a mid size car while travelling from Rome to Positano....run through a town when there was absolutely no need to leave the main roads. It is easily confused in hillside roads with cutbacks and turns and was often "lost" making our trip very confusing at times. The roads in Italy are difficult to navigate at the best of times, but the NUVI seemed to make it even worse....and all this with the latest Europe maps loaded the day before we left home last month. To top it off, the voice support cannot pronounce Italian street names even close to their proper pronunciation making it virtually useless. It has trouble finding the satellite more than my older model!! In all, best to wait for the next version!!

Pros: small, good screen visibility
Cons: poor in italy!

DEFECTIVE PRODUCT

The Garmin 775T IMMEDIATELY failed to work and I was forced to return it. Rather than replace the defective product immediately, I had to await its 2 week repair at Garmin. GPS City was not involved at all and only acted as a reseller. I would have expected Garmin to actually stand behind its product and not rely expect the consumer to do all the work for their defective product. This is a known problem with the 775T and is all over the Garmin site, so buyer beware.

Cons: irresponsible reseller and manufacturer
Recommend: NO

BEST EXAMPLE OF NON PERFORMANCE

The GPS that I bought is defective and will have to be fixed or replaced. I find that the process required to fix something much more complex a than the actual purchase of the product. I will be without the GPS for up to a month, if all goes well. For a recent purchase such as this I would have expected an immediate replacement through GPS City rather than have to deal with third party.

Pros: good potential
Cons: reliability
Recommend: NO

A DEFINITE STEP UP FROM PREVIOUS MODEL

This is my 4th Garmin GPS, and it replaces a Nuvi 770 (which my wife now uses - prior to that I had Nuvi 650 and 350). Each newer model improved upon the previous one, and the 775T is no exception.

I have now used it for about a month, including taking it to Saskatchewan and using it in a rental car to navigate into a pretty empty area, and it has worked flawlessly.

The traffic receiver has done its job the one time I navigated into Toronto (there is no reception where I live) and got me around some jams. I appreciate the "free" model over the annual subscription, and I have yet to see an ad - maybe I don't stop long enough at intersections!

Usability is good, as always the interface has had some subtle changes that make it easier to use appreciated is the ability to label Favourites with self-defined categories, reducing the number of items to be searched through. Less appreciated is the fact there seems to be no way to make this feature work with Mapsource - I have sent an inquiry to Garmin, but so far no reply, in over 10 days.

The text-to-speech algorithm seems to have, finally, fixed one of the more amusing "glitches" in previous versions eg. "Smith Dr. West" would be announced as "Smith Doctor West" - it now is correctly pronounced as "Smith Drive West."

The ability to choose the information displayed is also appreciated given that most cars have clocks, the fixed time of day display in previous versions (when not navigating) was less than useful - while strictly a novelty, I now use the "elevation" display which at least lets me rationalize why my Camry Hybrid gets poorer gas milage coming home from Toronto over going in - I am climbing a slow but definite hill. The choice when navigating that I am using - time-to- arrival - is marginally more useful than the previous time-of-arrival.

A major improvement is the turn-lane (lane assist) indicator when navigating. It is very helpful to know that the up-coming "keep left" on a major highway means keep in the three left-most lanes, rather than the two right-most etc..

One feature that I wish Garmin had, but seems to not want to add, is a "Shut-up for xx minutes" button. Sometimes, I know best - the navigation algorithm wants me to go a certain route, but I know that there is a better way, because I know local conditions - construction, bad roads, whatever - and it is very annoying to have to continually hear "Recalculating ..." which, even though it isn't, after a while sounds like nagging. Using the "Detour" function is no improvement, as it still tries to get you back to the "best" route as quickly as possible.

One major, major complaint this is a two map unit (North America and Europe). When purchased, both of the loaded maps were out-of-date - newer versions were available, dated prior to my purchase. And yet, despite that the price of the unit reflects the cost of two maps (compare the 775T - $760, to the 755T - $450, functionally identical except for some extra memory to store the extra map)it is somewhat chintzy of Garmin to apply their map update policy strictly to this unit - one free map update per unit. Since I paid for two maps, I should get two up-to-date maps! Even more galling is the up-date page to which you are directed when updating. It offers a choice of either of the two updates, North America and Europe, and it is only after choosing North America and updating, then going to update Europe for real $$$s, that you discover that the Europe update is almost twice the cost of the North America update. The costs of each should really be made clear. As I wrote, it is chintzy of Garmin to sell a unit with two maps, and charge for making one of those maps current. If they are going to sell units with maps that are out of date at the time of sale, the least they could do is update all the maps loaded. They charge enough for maps to begin with, there is no need to charge twice for one of them!

But still, this is a good unit, with minor flaws that may be personal to me - highly recommended. but, if you buy it, it is presumably because you need the Europe maps be sure to apply the one free map update to that map, and be prepared to spend another $70 to update your North America maps.

Pros: lane assist!
Cons: garmin's map update policy!!!!

NUVI 775T

My first GPS system so I'm not able to compare. Works well. Easy to use. I like the voice feature. Directions not always accurate, tells you to make a turn where no turn exists. Shopping areas, gas stations, etc. not always the closest. You can see a gas station in a small community from your car but it tells you the closest gas station by that company is 100 km away in another community.

Pros: easy to read map, finds satalite quickly
Cons: small communites shopping/directions not accurate

GOOD SO FAR

Installation was straight forward, good quick start manual. Great screen, easy to read in bright sunlight. Fast response time, accurate readings and so far maps seem up to date. Have yet to put it to the test with a difficult long trip.
