BEST OUTDOOR GPS SO FAR

We realy like it because it's simple to use. New at geocaching and having a Garmin cs60 there is no comparaison, so we returned the other one. Thank you to Quattrofun for suggesting to buy this GPS. Thank you to you for a fast delivery.

NICE LITTLE THING

Pros: all the canadian topo maps included
Cons: eating batteries like if it's chocolate

very easy to learn to work with, since it is pretty much the same structure as the Etrex serie exept that it is touchscreen and that the screen is much bigger.

OUTDATED MAPS MISSINFORMED BY HELP LINE

Pros: touch screen works good
Cons: old maps, battery life, pinpointer touchy

When I was looking at purchasing this unit, I contacted the help line to make sure it came with the most up to date map (V4)and was assured it would. The unit I recived is loaded with the older V2 maps, witch I have found to be rather inaccurate in parts of B.C. On a recent trip driving on a paved highway that has been there since before GPS was invented I was dissapointed to see it was not even on the map. I wish that I had been beter informed, and would have payed less for a unit with no maps and bought the new maps seperatly.

GREAT HIKING COMPANION IN THE WILDERNESS

Cons: relatively poor user instructions

Easy and intuitive when starting to use this GPS unit. Due to lack of detailed user instructions, difficult to learn full range of features, and difficult to get optimal use of this handy gadget. I plan to use the Oregon 400t, along with suitable Topo- maps for hiking in Southwest BC, in Germany and in the Austrian Alps.

OREGON 400T

Pros: user friendly, touch screen, shaded map
Cons: very poor in light, ,3d not that great

Oregon 400T is a replacement for an etex summit that I sent back because it would keep shutting off by it self & could not turn back on without hard seting & loose all way points, tracks, ect. was not very dependable. The GPS is mainly for hunting/fishing/boating.The 400T is very user friendly and easy to learn, very nice unit to use & Like the shaded map,, using Duracell rechargable NiMH batteries & last good.Would be nice to have an upgrade for the V2 Topo to view shade & 3D .I do have Topo V2 & Mapsource in my computer & can transfer tracks, way points ect. with no proplem but not 3D or shaded on my computer. Overall a great unit so far. I would recommend the Oregon 400T.

GREAT OUTDOOR GPS

Pros: wireless data transfer, paperless geocaching
Cons: screen not bright enough. compass calibration

I use this GPS mainly for Geocaching, I am overall very happy with it. Especially the wireless transfer capability. I wish it was a little brighter as in some conditions the screen is very hard to see. All said I am very happy with this GPS and would recommend it to anyone interested in a hand held GPS

STICKING WITH MY 60CSX

Cons: dim, dim, dim

Unit was extremely dim and difficult to see. Locked up frequently when used in a moving vehicle. Came with outdated maps because my unit was boxed before a certain day and was told by Garmin that they only guarantee latest maps on auto GPSs. ("topo maps don't change that much anyway"). Returned the unit and ate the 10% restocking fee.

RUGGED PIECE OF EQUIPMENT

Garmin needs to expand their manual e.g. how to download data into a computer.

NEVER USED A GPS BEFORE THIS...

Pros: touchscreen (w/lock)-easy to learn-colour-features
Cons: no screen protector included

I have never used a GPS unit before this one. It was very user friendly and easy to learn. Infact, I am still learning plenty about it as I go and having a lot of fun with it. Great unit in the vehicle for road use, maps are reasonably current and accurate. Some people had the opinion of lack of screen brightness (while not increasing the brightness to save battery) and while I tend to agree with that I find the benefit of the device outweighs the brightness issue since I have always found a way to read it. I have even increased the screen brightness for short periods so I could see better and did not have a problem with battery life (I use lithium). If you have concerns on battery life, my experience is that I have used one set of Energizer(R) Ultimate Lithium AA batteries and so far probably logged around 8 hours with only 1 of the 4 green power bars disappearing. So although a bit more pricey for Lithium batteries they do prove to give longevity to use of the unit and I expect to get about 16+ hours on these batteries based on what I see so far. Another point I will touch on is that I read somewhere of a negative opinion that due to built in maps there was only like 284Mb of room left of the units' 4Gb capacity. Although it does appear to be unbalanced for space, I can say that having the region for which you live pre-loaded is nice (not to worry about losing or damaging a map SD card) and 284Mb is plenty for the basic routes, waypoints etc. I will be taking the unit on my hunting trips this Fall and will see how it performs off the road and in varying temperatures and storing more data but so far I have built some confidence over it but like a good boy scout always carry the compass just incase. So many great features about it though, I am looking forward to many adventures with it!

Additionally, I co-worker referred me to gpscity.ca and I have thanked him a couple of times now. Best price around and great service/shipping.

EASY TO USE, ALMOST PERFECT

Pros: ease of use
Cons: accuracy

I purchased this with a Stainless Steel U-Bolt Mount by RAM Mount and a invisibleSHIELD Screen Protector by Zagg, then mounted it on my motorcycle. Despite being wacked by tree branches, splashed in mud, and coated in dust, it worked flawlessly. I never had a problem reading the screen in any sun conditions, although one could ask for more brightness on any screen of this type. It is certainly a lot brighter than the Alpine iPod stereo I have installed in my truck. This unit is easy enough to use that I didn't really have to read the manual. The touch screen makes it so easy to mark and name waypoints. If I had one complaint it would be accuracy. I have read that the 60CSx is more accurate and it would not surprise me. If Garmin could increase the accuracy it would be almost perfect.

AWESOME TOUCH SCREEN GPS

Pros: easy to use, lots of neat functions
Cons: dim screen in bright sunlight

So I read most of the reviews on this very cool unit, they were really very accurate, the only problem being a hard to read screen in direct bright sunlight, other than that, its better than I expected.

NICE TOOL

Pros: easy to learn
Cons: maps outdated, carabiner, battery life

I have used it for a few weeks only and in the overall it works good. I've met though some problems. The battery life is rather short with rechargeables but decent with Lithium. The screen is a bit tough to read in sunlight. I have not been able to find an address and I always get an unknown entry message (I'm using the French version). The map, of my area at least, needs an update. This carabiner contraption is akward and I much prefer a simple sling to wear around the neck. It's handier and easier to hide for hunting.

PRELOADED MAP IS THE LATEST VERSION

Pros: everything
Cons: screen under daylight, readable but can be improve

I have the original V2 Topo Canada map. I can assure you that the map preloaded is the latest version (V4 ?). They just have some problem with the version number.

It also contain street address information so you don't need to buy another map for auto routing.

COMES WITH OUTDATED TOPO DATA. V2 INSTEAD OF V4 !!

Pros: touch screen is a blast to use. lovely.
Cons: outdated data, includes v2 and v4 is already out.

Well, after I read all about the Oregon 300, and was set onto buying it, Garmin announced a 400T version with the Canada Topo maps on it. I told myself, well, it’s a little bit more expensive than buying the 300, a descent 4g micro SD card and the Canada Topo software on DVD. For the 50 bucks or so difference, I had a device with 4GB internal ram, and a free micro SD slot for more data. After receiving the unit, I found myself with no software what so ever, not even the waypoint manager or the USB drivers (which can be downloaded from garmin’s website). The worst of it is the data that has been loaded onto the 400TC. They loaded Canada Topo V2! This data is dated of 2003, they did not even use their latest dataset Topo Canada V4!!!

The internal memory of the Oregon 400TC is 4GB, and there is 292Meg left, the rest is used up by the Topo dataset. The backlit is the same as all the other Oregon, do not pray they upgraded it for this model, so it suffers from the brightness issues you can read about on the internet. For myself, I find it OK, since it is a handheld device, you can move it around to find the best angle to read the maps.

If I was granted a do over, I would get the Oregon 300, the Topo Canada v4 DVD and a micro SD card. At that price, I thought I was getting a Cadillac, yet, no minimal software and outdated data. Very upsetting.
