Pros: lots of nice features Cons: screen size is a bit small
Picture quality amazes me, Very High Quality GPS and fit in your hand nicely. I bought this one for my wife and bought myself a Montana 650. Brings lotz of spare batterie with you when Geaocaching, becasue it will drain your batteries quickly. Rechargable Nickel Metal Hydryde are highly recommended to have with you.

GREAT UNIT AND GREAT PRICE!
Pros: ease of use, compact size, good battery life Cons: manual not detailed enough
Provides for all my GPS needs, which includes backpacking and hiking. Only drawback is the manual is not too detailed for advanced use of the unit, especially loading mapping software, etc. Unit only has very basic maps and requires loading digital maps for advanced use. I had no problem and love the easy touch screen and easy to follow menus. Buy the 550T if you don't want to hassle loading topo and routing software, but you pay the extra price.

EXCELLENT GPS
Pros: configurable information display Cons: no show stoppers, lots of advice available on 'net
Bought this unit to replace my 8 yr old Legend.
The Good: - excellent touch screen, works with gloves too. - accurate gps information - numerous ways to display information - user defined data fields for display - with a 4gb or 8gb micro sd, stores and displays an amazing amount of map information - will display/goto other pois - the camera is handy.
The bad: - bit of a battery hog, carry spares - when geocaching, would like to display destination lat/long along with the current lat/long (Montana functionality). - the camera could have better resolution (limited to 3 gb, should be 5+)
The Really Good - a 110-240v charger with ingenious multiple plugs for Europe etc. - good Christmas price and FAST delivery from GPS city.
I also purchased a ZAG screen protector and would highly recommend this product. While offering anti-scratch protection, the touch screen functionality remains responsive.

GOOD BUT BATTERY?
Pros: nice design, easy to navigate Cons: batteries does not last long
This is very good product, it is easy to navigate, image is clear and crystal and signal great. It records GPS point along with photos taken and can be easily uploaded into internet. Comfortable grip and nice design.
However, Alkaline batteries does not last long. When battery is low, warning messages prompt every 30 seconds with is frustrating when navigating. Rechargeable NiMH batteries (with charger) come with the O. 550 which is a plus but only good for day trip and then requires recharge.
For longer trips, have sufficient Lithium batteries with you.

VERY NICE BUT DISAPOINTING
Pros: touch screen, wireless track transfer Cons: very poor screen visibility
This is a really nice unit, the 3D is ok, I'm not too keen on the interface when you're looking at the map, and want to switch to the odometer, you have to exit the map area navigate to the Odometer and enter the odometer. Reverse to process to go back to the amp. The screen is extremely hard to read, very disapointing. I use my GPS units on my ATV and its important to be able to read the GPS as I'm riding. the screen is so hard to read that I reverted back to my GPSMAP76Cx. One other thing I am not happy with is that its not fully compatible with MapSource, the recommended software is Basecamp, but basecamp won't let you save a single file with a single track. Basecamp works like a database, where it stores all tracks and waypoints together in one file. Basecamp is very usefull for the 3D mapping but not usefull enough for me to use it as my main GPS unit. The Camera is very nice for a 3 megapixel it tags the location. I think Garmin could have done a better job with this device.

Pros: lots Cons: display (hard to read)
I like this gps but like others have said was dissapointed with the screen brightness this is not my first gps i have had aprox 10 and i was replacing a gps due to small screen (etrex vista hc)to this larger display but the whole screen is hard to see, you must turn the gps to have direct sunlight on it to see it good or in low light conditions turn backlight on ,i have tried it with backlight on during the day this improves it but i'm picky and find it not the best ,I would still recomend it but i rate the display on a scale of 1-10 (6) and this is the major falt with this g.p.s.

OREGON 550
With my work I have had the opportunity to use almost every handheld and even some sonar GPSMap units as well. Ranging back to the GPS II plus, then onto the etrex units, then the 60cx, 76CSx, rino 120, and some additional models. Every unit has it's good and bad points. The Oregon 550 in my opinion is a great unit. Yes, the instruction book is basically a quick quide at most. First I thought my box was missing the true instruction booklet but I was mistaken. Garmin dropped the ball on this one. The features on this unit match most others. Quick to acquire, easy to learn and navigate through if you are familar with using Garmin units. I like the camera option, was the main reason for the purchase. Pictures are not proffessional quality by no means, could of likely went with a 5 or even 8 megapixel quality for future consideration. Unit is a little heavier for its size, but now at least you don't have to pack a seperate camera on your backpack or hunting trips. I just hope the screen lasts as my previous units after a few years of daily use have seen better days. I did purchase the Oregon Series Slip Case with the plastic screen cover on it. With the cose on the screen touch features still function although not 100%, I'm willing to forgo a little function for longer screen life and clarity. I recommend this unit!

GREAT HAND HELD GPS
Pros: really good & sensitive gps reciever
It is a great GPS that I have used both for hiking and most recently on a Sailing expedition from St Maarten to the BVI's as a backup instrument. I purchased the Bkue Water chart for the area and it worked like a charm - extremely accurate and reliable. In addition, I downloaded the Birds Eye satelite imagery from Garmin that really separates this GPS from any of its competitors. The touch screen allows easy and rapid navigation between different modes. I love it!

GREAT TRAIL AND BIKE GPS
Pros: large screen, touch screen, paperless geocache Cons: battery life, camera not great
This is a great GPS. Battery life is a little short for multi day hiking trips. Camera is not great but it is nice not to carry both a camera and a gps. If you are picky about your pictures or need to zoom the picture, look hard at the Or egon 450. I have no complaints about the screen visibility. My vista is brighter but the screen size and the touch screen make up the difference for me.

GREAT GPS UNIT
Pros: touch screen, water proof, camera, custom maps. Cons: finger scrolling the map places a waypoint.
This GPS is simple to use, rugged, water-proof and has all the features I need. I even use the built in camera. I'm glad I got the model without the pre-loaded topo maps because a short search of the web will provide most any free topo map you need. This unit has a custom map option. You can use google Earth, take a screen shot, re-georeference it back in Google Earth then save it to your 550 as a .kmz. With this method you can load an air photo of anywhere on the planet.
The only con so far is that when you are finger scrolling maps on the screen the unit keeps placing a waypoint where you don't want it, a bit annoying.

Pretty happy with the GPS but be cautious of the screen. In some conditions outside it is unreadable. This is not an exaggeration. I have to get the sun directly behind me to see it well. VERY PLEASED
Pros: a good multipurpose gpsr Cons: some routing bugs. not as intuitive as expected
Caveats: 1. While I've installed the latest software (with Chirp compatibility), I haven't used the GPSr since then. 2. Most of my experience with it has been in Ireland using open source maps, rather than the Garmin ones. (I found the Garmin ones weren't $80 better than the free ones.) Some of my routing issues could have resulted from this.
3. My normal GPS use is for backcountry camping, hiking, and car use, with occasional geocaching. So far, the Oregon has been predominantly used for car and caching, so I haven't determined how effective it is in the wilderness.
When I decided it was time to upgrade the old etrex, I read user reviews, professional reviews, forums, specs, anything I could find. It came down to the 450, 550, and 550T. In the end, I decided that having a waterproof camera in the same unit was worth the difference, even though I expect Garmin to announce a better one before Christmas. I decided to go with open source maps, so the 550 was ultimately the winner.
The learning curve in general was quick, but there still are enough functional differences that I'm far from mastering it. Despite setting it for English, the profiles originally showed up in Hungarian, but were mostly easy to translate and redo. I've added my own profiles, mostly for a recent trip to Ireland (using open source maps for there) which allowed me to switch between driving in the cities and walking through them.
While not as functional as a dedicated camera with features, the built in one is more than adequate in regular situations. There are enough examples online to illustrate this, but for the most part I'm very happy with the pictures I've taken with it.
It picks up a signal quickly - a lot faster than my old GPSr - and holds onto it. I haven't tried hiking with it yet, so I don't know how it is under deep cover, but in cities it's much better.
I looked at the Dakota line, but found them too small, and uncomfortable in my hand. The Oregon is a little heavier than I'd like, but it's easy to hold.
It has frozen on me a couple of times, but removing and replacing the batteries has worked so far. I haven't had to use the full master reset procedure (knock on wood) so far. The old one also froze from time to time, so it's hard to say that it's a problem only with the Oregon. However, setting a route where you spell the names out does lock it up. But setting routes using favourites or recently found is a problem free workaround. (Some people have reported this bug, but it doesn't appear to be common, and could be from using non-garmin maps)
For geocaching, I used to carry a GPS, a PDA, and a camera, so having all of these in one unit is much more convenient. Mapping is quite accurate, but sometimes the routing leaves much to be desired, as the screen icons showed me right at the cache, while the distance screen was telling me I was quite a distance away. (In this case the map was right, I'm assuming my routing input was off.)
Routing differs from the car GPS, and sometimes rather then recalculating fresh when I go a different route, it recalculates a new route to take me back to where it thinks I should be. In other words, once it has set my route, if I start to differ from it at point X, it tries to reroute me back to X so I can take the "correct route". Stopping navigation and starting it again fixes this, but it is awkward when it happens, particularly in a strange city. But this could be yet another feature of my mapping selections.
The 550 comes with carabiner, two batteries and a two-battery charger with several adapters, a quick start book, and a CD with detailed instructions. Instructions are on the Garmin site as well, so I haven't used the CD.
In general, I'm quite happy with my purchase. There are some things I liked better about my old GPSr, and would have liked to see here - a more intuitive 'find' feature, an included lanyard, etc., but these are relatively minor quibbles. While I wouldn't purchase it for a single use - automotive GPSrs are better for driving, and it's expensive to only use for geocaching, I think it meets my needs perfectly.

GREAT HANDHELD GPS
A great unit, easy to use, good battery life, compact. The Oregon 550 is a replacement GPS to a Garmin Model 12 which took a fair amount of time to master & remember the multitude of functions - not really as user friendly and used up the 4 x AA batteries fairly quickly !!! Pros: easy to use, fast locating, Cons: cost..basemap..maybe the back cover fitting
works great, with a lot of nice features..the photo location feature can be useful at times. locates fast and accurately, not sure why the unit cant tell which direction your facing(when standing still) in map mode when it has a 3-axis compass. also i am not sure i trust the waterproofness of the back as there is slight movement in it when gripping the unit. does bounce around a bit under tree cover when geocaching..way more than you need to spend on geocaching. The basemap is fairly useless. I do like the unit and for 60$ over the oregon450 i received rechargeable batteries and the camera

GARMIN OREGON 550
Pros: too many to mention. Cons: doesn't float, camera freezes unit on occasions
Great GPS and very easy to use. This unit is my first GPS ever and cannot compare it to anything else. I am extremely pleased with my Oregon 550. Downloading maps from the DVD is extremely easy.
I've used it quite a lot hiking in the bush and while camping. I've used it as well while driving.
I'm looking forward to using it while kayaking Georgian Bay and Lake Superior this summer. The unit is waterproof to IPX7 which I have no clue what that means...I'll have to do my reasearch. The unit does not float as far as I am aware which is a bit of a disappointment. I'll look into a floating case or keep it attached to my spray skirt with a decent lanyard. I also bought this unit as it has a marine feature and can download nautical charts.
The unit takes decent pictures and love the idea of geo-tagging the photo for future reference. I've had the unit freeze on three separate occasions while taking a photo. Not sure why this occurred.
I've also purchased a heart rate monitor and use it while biking and running...if only it had an mp3 player I'd be all set. There are many other great features to this GPS unit that I've used.

BEST OUTDOOR GPS I EVER OWNED
Pros: easy to operate and to configure.nice display. Cons: none.
This is a very good GPS to own. Very easy to operate and understand. The display is readible even in direct sunlight. I use rechargeable ni-mh batteries which last long enough (2500miliamp). It is even more interesting with Topo 1/20000 and Bathymetric maps. I have easy access to all the applications by holding it with one hand and operating only with my thumb. Me and one of my friend used to be Magellan users and have lots of practice with different outdoor GPS. Once I showed him this Oregon 550 GPS, he sold his Garmin 60CSX and ordered this one right away From GPS City. After about 10 days operating and working with it, this is the best one and we both agree on this. Easy to record tracks with different colours. We have nothing to complaint.

AWESOME GPS
Pros: easy to use, fun Cons: battery life could be better, camera zoom so-so
I have been looking to upgrade my Legend HCx for awhile and wanted to get one of the new Garmin units that did paperless geocaching. I had my eye on this unit for a long time and when I finally got the coin to buy it, I did. Was I disappointed? Not even close.
This unit is awesome. I use it primarily for geocaching so I've spent a lot of time doing that. Maps are very clear, usage of the unit is great. Interface is very simple and easy to configure.
The camera works pretty good but the zoom is not the best but it still good. Screen is fine to see in daylight despite what you may have read.
I do wish the rechargeable batteries that came with it would charge when the unit is plugged into a car adapter but it's not that big a deal.
I would absolutely recommend this to anyone thinking about a trail GPS

Pros: user friendly. Cons: freezes from time to time.
I have been using this unit quite a bit in the month and a half that i have had it and so far it has been great. One problem however is that when using the whereigo program, the device freezes from time to time. Other than that is is fairly accurate...2-4 meters on a good day, and about 15 meters at it's worst(deep woods overcast winter day) It has a ton of great features..the camera and waterproof are a big bonus, as GPS's can get quite wet on a snowy day. GREAT FOR GEOCACHING
Pros: great geocaching features, interface, camera Cons: poor reception under deep cover, waas issue
I had originally purchased an Oregon 200 from Costco in what was a great deal. I loved the featureset of the 200 but found that the lack of a 3-axis compass was a real problem when caching. I also found we were always forgetting the camera so when I found the 550 and decided we did in fact like geocaching, it was a must buy!
Having used it for a month or so now, it's pretty well as I expected (esp coming from the 200 model). The interface on this line really is brilliant. So easy to use, has tons of great features for paperless caching. I also find the on- road navigation is not too bad either. Despite having no voice prompts, the series of "R2D2" chirps and whistles soon becomes clear when it's saying "turn here right now!".
My only problem has been the reception in deep cover. On a recent expedition with some friends with the GPSMAP models, they were consistently getting 3-4m resolution whereas I was up in the 20s! It made finding the caches a real challenge. There is also the well documented WAAS issues with this line which seems like a software issue to me.
All that said, this is a pricy unit but I would buy it again. The featureset is brilliant and having the camera built in just seals the deal for me.

GREAT OUTDOOR NAVIGATION TOOL
This is everything you need from the navigation tool when you're in the mountain. I've been waiting this item over an year to be produced and Garmin "read my mind" and give it to the world now. I guess in the next ver. of "When you're on the track" Garmin will evaluate the wireless connections to the PC, just to leave the USB cable away.

AAH. WUTSUP DOC?
Pros: love the camera. quick at locating. nice for geoca Cons: losing map information. highways, backroads, gone.
I downloaded the topographic data from v4 to a 4GB microsd card. After using it for a month, my map details have started to disappear. I started off in recreational profile and one day all my map info such as elevation points and highways, rivers and lakes just disappeared. I changed over to geocaching profile and got all the info back plus found out that geocaching has country roads info. Liked that, but one week later that disappeared on me as well. can't seem to get it back on the screen no matter what i try (resetting). Hope that Garmin fixes this little glitch pretty soon, or I won't be able too use it anymore. Also, this thing has the worst instruction manual or lack thereof, of any garmin unit I have ever owned.

WORKS WITH WFT-E3A
Cons: touch screen could be a bit more responsive.
I bought the 550 to use with my Canon 50D w/WFT-E3A and it works well (GPS in Spanner mode under setup). I am surprised at how well the antenna picks up the signal but then again my previous GPS's were of the PDA variety.

HARD TO LEARN
Pros: fantastic improvements Cons: poor instruction booklet
The Oregon 550 is so different from my "old" 76CSx that it took me 7 days of hard work and help from friends to adapt.
It reminded me of the move between Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X !
Once you get how to work with it, it is a great machine.
