Garmin HomePort Software microSD with SD Adapter Reviews

Kayaker

JUST DOES THE JOB

This software might be more useful for boaters rather than Kayakers - as those with a 6 inch draft might do just as well planning with Google Earth. A major problem is you cannot print your work plan (hint, screenshot). I like to print the plan, laminate it and carry it on my Deck.

Another disappointment is the software cannot see the chip in my GPSMAP76CSx. So every time I want to use the software, I have to take the fragile microSD out of the GPS (usually removing batteries too), put it in an adapter, put the adapter in a regular Size SD to USB device and plug it in. That's a lot of handling for a tiny microSD. I prefer to put it in the GPS once and access it from there.

Operationally, as you zoom in - say to Vargas Island on west coast of Vancouver Island, the Island name disappears. In other cases the island names don't appear until you zoomed in quite a bit.

Also, if you use the ruler tool to set a course, the screen doesn't auto scroll if you need to reach an off screen destination. So you have to zoom out or take smaller steps (and add the section distances).

It would be nice if, when you create a waypoint, the software would tell you the closest tide and current station to that point.

On a plus side, it does let me see more of the area than I can using the tiny 76CSx screen - but it is expected to do that.

So if you are using a small handheld, HomePort will allow you to see more, plot courses and move them to the GPS (by adding them to the MicroSD) Otherwise you be doing more "hand copying", more chance for error.

So I have to rate this as "okay". It should auto-scroll. It should recognize the chip in the GPS, not requiring removal. And the Product Description should be more forthcoming in letting you know you can't print out your work (directly from the software).

I wanted to plug my GPS (with chip) into my computer and use Homeport to plan everything - allowing me to set a course, tell me the tide and current stations along the way, and it wouldn't in inconceivable to allow date/time input and show me tide and current data along the course given an estimated forward speed. IF I can do it with a pencil and paper, the software should be able to also.

But the bottom line is - it is Garmin's software for reading their g2 and vision BlueChart chips. So it is the only game in town.

GPSCity's price is reasonable and it arrived in a timely fashion.

Pros: only thing that works with garmin g2
Cons: cannot print chart, most remove chip from gps

GARMIN MOTORCYCLE GPS

Bought the unit for use on my motorcycle. Just finished the first trip (5000 km)across some of the northern United States and then home across Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. I only used the visual capability as I do not have blue tooth and too much noise to heard verbal instructions. Unit worked well and I cold read the map all of the time. I have used Garmin units before but this is the best I have used. Worked quit well with my riding glove son. I was fmiliar with the Garmin operating system so no learning curve. Still find some maps are missing data and or in error but in all cases I did get through. I was riding across some cities I was not familiar with and had no problems and did get to addresss as entered with ease.

Pros: easy to mount on bike. easy to read map.
Cons: map updates. short battery life.

NO DETAIL

i hunt in the central ontario region and was disapointed in the lack of detail. ther are no rail lines shown in the longlac area and a lack of roads that have been there for years.a lost person would stay lost or walk many extra miles because of this. are there other maps available that show better grafics for this area?

Pros: elavations and lakes
Cons: lack off detail and poor grafics

NUVI 50LM

I had a Nuvi 650 which I liked but the touch screen quit working so I purchased the Nuvi 50LM as a replacement. I am very satisfied with it's function and how easy it is to use. The larger screen is nice and it has more functions than the old one. My wife (my navigator) really likes it as well. GPScity.com was very quick in getting the product to me in just a couple of days. However, just one week after taking delivery I found the same item at a lower price in a local boxstore's sale ad. Overall I am fully satisfied with the item and the service.

Pros: more functions/feature and cheaper than my old one
Cons: found it advertised cheaper just after purchase

VERY STURDY, WELL MADE MOUNT

I installed the Garmin bike mount for my Montana 650t and it is very well made. The install is easy, you can mount the base vertically or horizontally. I had concerns that the mount would not be sturdy enough. After placing the unit in the mount my worries were removed. The mount is very high quality and the fit is very snug. There is even an extra security screw that can be tightened to further prevent the mount from releasing the unit. Garmin even provided a nice little screwdriver. I have no doubt my Montana will not fall out of this mount. Highly recommend this product.

Pros: snug fit, easy to install/remove, quality parts
Cons: none

WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING

I have had this unit for 2 yrs now, actually I have had 4 units in the past 2 yrs. It turns out that even though the Garmin web page, Canadian and US, lists that this unit can use the GTM 35/40 FM traffic power cord. Well my experience is the exact opposite. I purposely purchased the unit because it has this feature and from day one had a problem, the unit restart itself every time it is plugged into the traffic cable. Sometimes not right away but sure enough it restarts. I purchased my original unit for $600 CND, spent $70 on a GTM Traffic cord, $150 shipping the units back to Raytech and Garmin and still no working GPS. Garmins service is outstanding. I have had a tech working with me for 2 yrs and is great. They even sent me a new GTM cable to make sure it was not the problem. Like I said, Garmin has swapped the unit out 4 times and has provided new GTM cables but with no results.

As far as a motorcycle GPS, it is outstanding. Works great, easy to use, glove friendly, waterproof, UV resistant, comes with all the hardware for mounting. What can I say, but wow!

Unfortunately I wanted to use this unit in my vehicle to avoid traffic on my commute to work and well it just DOESN'T work. If you do not need the traffic this is an awesome unit.

To give this unit a fair review it really depends on what you want it for. For me needing the traffic feature makes this an average to poor GPS. If the traffic feature worked, honestly this would be a 6 star rating, yes I said 6.

For the record, I have 5 Garmins, one without traffic and 3 with and all work with traffic except the zumo. It really suck to have to use 2 GPS for the price I paid for the zumo

Pros: great motorcycle gps
Cons: sucks for traffic

NUVI PORTABLE FRICTION MOUNT

I watched gpscity.com's video demonstration of the Portable Friction Mount, which was very helpful. When I actually got the item, though, my initial fear was that it wasn't flexible enough to really conform to my dash. Fortunately, I was wrong. Enough of its surface grabs onto the dash so that it stays put. It works really well - on the dashes of all our cars. We wouldn't be without it!

Pros: truly flexible mount really grabs onto dash

VERY NICE!

For all those who complain about the small screen, why did you purchased it then ? You should have bought a larger (and way more expensive) unit... Yes it is small, but so is the price for all the features it got. I wanted a small affordable features-packed device so I bought the Dokota 20. And much easier anf faster to operate (user-friendly) than the side-buttonned eTrex....

AWESOME NON-SKID GPS MOUNT

Bought this because we were going on a trip to California where window mounts aren't allowed. It performed flawlessly, and made it super easy to remove the whole assembly and hide it when we left the vehicle. Much better than leaving a suction cup on the window or having the suction cup marks that encourages some would be thug to smash your windows in hopes there might be a GPS somewhere.

It also prevents the side mounted cord from pulling on the GPS cradle while it dangles in the air (like it would from a window mount). This is awesome as a common failure of the nuvi 7xx series is the female plug breaking the little pins that connect to the circuit board in the cradle due to the weight of a dangling cord.

The non-skid assembly allows u to look the cord under the base, so the cord is NOT pulling on the cradle. Excellent design.

Pros: discreet and easy for fast removal / setup
Cons: none that i can see.

THIS IS MY FIRST AUTOMOBILE GPS

I've no experience to compare this unit to however, I'm very happy with it so far.

The touch screen is very responsive - I understand earlier touch screen models weren't really 'touch' screen - more like 'press and hold' screen. This one is more like the I- Pod screen that most people are accustomed to.

The start-up was easy - I'm no computer dummy, but the instructions were easy to follow even for a beginner. Patience is required during the downloading process as there are long periods with no apparent activity, but my initial download and registration were over in just under 35 minutes.

On-screen instructions are intuitive and easy to follow. The maps are brilliant with just enough detail to assist the driver. The unit's voice directions are good, although sometimes the final 'turn' direction comes barely in time due to GPS/satellite lag. Having said that, the 'warning' directions give plenty of room to prepare for one's next manoeuver.

Some of the 'voices' seem clearer to me than others, that probably varies with the individual. The 'automatic' volume adjustment that reads and overcomes background noise level is very good.

I am still leasrning the more advanced features, and I haven't experimented with voice commands yet because I haven't needed them. The Bluetooth 'hands free' mobile phone connection is ridiculously easy to configure and use.

On the Pacific Coast we get rain (go figure), and when it is raining heavily at night, street name signs would have to be the size of billboards to be visible (and I'm not having any luck with city councils in that area). In addition to that, I'm not getting any younger - so it was a real chore for me to go to an unfamiliar address on a rainy night. Now I just turn 'nuvi' on and relax, allowing me to concentrate on my defensive driving.

Garmin, you've made an old guy a happy driver again!

Pros: all pro's so far.
Cons: other than the price, none encountered yet.

GARMIN HANDHELD SERIES BIKE MOUNT

I was a bit skeptical at first about the zip tie mounting system, but have since put many off road miles with it mounted to the handlebars of my dual sport motorcycle. I pulled the zip ties (2 of them) very tight with a pair of pliers during installation and the mount does not move. For the price you can afford to purchase several to use on different bikes. GPS City was very quick (and reasonably price) on the shipping. I think I got the unit in 2 days.

A+ for shipping quickly. I caused a problem that prevented a successful installation. I called GPSCity for help and was given phone numbers of Kenwood and Garmin, that were no help. Called GPSCity a second time and, fortunately, Ben answered the phone. I say fortunately because he really seemed to care about my issue and really came through. It was a simply procedural mistake I had made in the installation. His attitdue was excellent! In this day in time it is getting more difficult to receive any form of after the sale backup. Thanks to Ben, he came through for me.

OUTSTANDING !

Took it in the trail and fishing, and it worked flawlessly. You definitely need a carrying case with it, and GizzMoVest has a decent one for the Montana 650/650T series. Carry spare AA batteries, it is a little power consuming, but always depends of your backlight settings.

REVIEW OF GARMIN APPROACH G6

Product is very user friendly even for the non-technology users. Very good battery life and I like the rechargeable ion batteries, not sure how and if they can be replaced by end user when they eventually go. I've used other Golf GPS on the iPhone that can keep stats on number of putts, driving accuracy, sand shots and penalty stokes per hole. It's a good way to get really good stats on where you need to improve your game on. The GARMIN G6 doesn't offer anything close to this other than keeping club average distances as you hit different clubs. The only thing you have to remember on the G6, if you want to start keeping club distance adverage, is to hit the "MEASURE" button before you start moving towards your ball - something I keep forgetting to do. I also pretty disapointed with the resolution of the display - GARMIn seems to have gone backwards with the G6 rather than improve it. I emailed them and they stated that it was to improve visibility in bright sunlight. I work in the Technology field and know that they have other displays available to them that would give better graphics while still being very good in bright sunlight. The question to always ask, is at what cost would this be at to get the higher resolution! Although many golf courses are available, there asre still some popular ones in my area missing. One of them being probably one of the best in our area - The Hollinger Golf Club in Timmins although Garmin has several of the smaller 9 hole courses in much smaller communities. You can check the availabilty of course in your area before you puchase any GARMIN Golf GPS. They indicate that it is on the list to be added but give no date on when that could be be - 1 month, 6 months, 1 year or 5, who knows! All in all, it does what it is suppose to do. On a recent Golf Trip to Michigan, another buddy of mine had the "Golf Buddy" GPS and in most instances the distances where very close. On a few holes, the GARMIN seemed to be off by 20 yards or so to the green on approach shots. It was obvious that the distances were closer to 60 yards rather than the 80 yards the GARMIN G6 was indicating - I'm not sure why that is but that's what you can get when getting these courses from Google Earth and not walking them. If you want that accuracy than you should look at the SkyCaddie that comes with a yearly subscription based on where you play and how many courses you play, NO THANKS for me!

One last note, I've lost my first two rounds from memory after ending the round after the 18th hole. I figure it's because I was missing scores on previous holes. If you don't have a score for each hole and end the round it seems to NOT save it. I could not find anything in the manual or Garmin's website about this. MAKE sure a score is enterred for all holes before quitting a round! :)

Pros: simple to use, long battery life
Cons: screen res. is low & few option to keep stats

HELLA GRIP

I purchased the mounting cradle with power cord and installed it on my dual sport (KLR) motorcycle which I use for adventure riding. My latest ride(camping trip with full camping gear)included some very rough terrain on high country back roads. During a 25 mile an hour turn I ran across some loose gravel, lost traction and the bike went down (high sided). With exception of some sore ribs and cracked plastics, all turned out ok. Equipment stayed on the bike and the amazing thing was my Garmin 550 was still attached to the cradle and power cord, unharmed. Considering the forces involved in the crash and the fact the cradle held and did not brake or release the grip on the GPS is a winner in my book. Can't miss with this one.

Pros: strong hold, adjustable, convient to use,
Cons: none worth mentioning

ZUMO 665

Not too bad of a unit. Works as described, and for the most part, all of the early bugs people have complained about have been fixed. I still get some weird behavior at times with XM cutting out, but a reboot of the zumo and my bluetooth helmet headset has fixed it every time (not requiring a full reset that others have said was necessary in the past).

XM reception could be a little better, I have my antenna out in the open (on top of my front brake master cylinder) and rarely see 3 bars (full) signal, typically only 1-2.

Also, the navigation can be a little weird at times. For example, without any avoidances on toll roads or highways set, and with the unit set to 'fastest time' mode, it still had me take the parkway through downtown during rush hour in NJ, rather than staying on the turnpike. I would expect this behavior in 'shortest distance' mode, but not in 'fastest time' mode.

Navweather works well, with the alerts and everything. I thought you were supposed to be able to automatically route around weather, but I haven't found that option if it is there.

Pros: nav andh music/weather from xm on the bike
Cons: weird routes sometimes, xm a little buggy

VALUE FOR MONEY

I purchased the Nuvi 550 for my motorcycle travels. It may not have all the bells and whistles of the Zumo, but the Nuvi 550 does everything that a typical user would need. Good size screen, easily readable while on the move, and priced reasonably. Only downside is the lack of Bluetooth.

Pros: waterproof, large screen
Cons: no bluetooth

DISAPOINTING

I drive truck for few years and I ve always use car's GPS. With a little common sense, it's overall done a great job over the past years. I decided to spent the extra buck for a truck dedicated GPS, but the map are so full of mistake (in Montreal's area at least) about which roads are for truck or not, that it s so unreliable that it doesn't worth the price difference between car gps and truck gps. My good'old 1490 was not bad at all. The logbook option is good only for US DOT rules. Very annoying warning blocking the screen when you use a road it think is not truck allowed. In car mode it do the same job as any other car's GPS, only it's more expensive.

Pros: humm still searching for it
Cons: unreliable truck mapping

MUST HAVE BUT DOES MAKE THE WATCH SIT HIGHER

This is the best GPS watch on the market and if doing Triathlons, you must have this piece. Fast easy secure attachment to bike and back onto the hand for swim/run. It does raise the profile of the watch significantly -- but that is the price you have to pay.

Pros: fast, secure and does exactly what you need.
Cons: adds 2-3mm height... but there is no better option

GREAT, BUT THE BLUETOOTH IS USELESS

I bought this last year and have really enjoyed it. The docking cradle is fantastic - you don't have to plug and unplug the power cable each time you want to remove the GPS.

The one problem I've had with this thing is that it will not stay connected to my phone (blackberry torch) via bluetooth. It randomly drops (then sometimes reconnects, sometimes not) the connection after a few seconds up to about 20 minutes. No audible warning when it drops the connection - just a notification on the screen for 5 seconds (which sometimes I don't see). VERY frustrating.

Routing is good, though it does tend to take me down side streets when a better, more arterial road is just up ahead. Love the multitouch screen - way better than the older ones. I don't have any issues with the glare on the screen at all.

Pros: small, great cradle, fast, excellent screen
Cons: bluetooth basically useless
Recommend: NO OPINION

NUVI 3590

This unit replaced my 1490. The new unit is thinner with an improved touch screen. It also has enough memory to hold the entire map data base. All the functionality that I have tried works well. The user interface has been tweaked for the better. One caveat, Mapsource will not recognize the unit. You have to use Base Camp.

Pros: size, memory capacity, touch screen
Cons: no mapsource support - uses base camp

REVIEW

Excellent quality parts. This is the perfect alternative to having to purchase a new $30 power cable. Why do that when you can purchase this and fix it yourself? I recommend this product to replace missing/broken parts.

A SECOND NUVI 550

Pros: waterproof, replacement battery.

ORIGINAL GARMIN PART

The Garmin Mic hanger in my boat was not convenient for use while underway. I wanted to leave it in place to hold the mic while not underway and needed an additional hanger. GPS City has the original factory Garmin part and very reasonable shipping. Other sources charged the same for the hanger but MUCH more to ship such a small and lightweight item.

Pros: garmin part, quick ship at very reasonable price
Cons: none
