GARMIN GPS "TRUCK ROUTING"

I drove as a OTR (18 wheel truck) driver 2006-2008 (48 states). I bought a high-end Garmin Nuvi, such as the C680. The “Truck routing” option is a problem. I cannot just follow whatever routing commands it says because it will eventually get me into a real pickle or problem situation. I called Garmin technical support and the lady there told me that “Truck routing” just means wider roads and that Garmin units know NOTHING about any low bridges, etcetera.

Really, if they would just take the “Restricted Route” and “Low Bridge” information from the Appendix in the front of the of the Rand McNally trucker atlas and build that into the Garmin “Truck Routing” function, then that would be a HUGH improvement. The Rand McNally trucker atlas is widely used by truckers and available in truck stops.

My Garmin Streetpilot C330 i have it set on truck routing and it sends me on no truck routes. I have it set on the fastest route but it takes me the long way around.

THE BEST

This model is the best value at any price. If you want a "No Nonsense" device this is the one. The optional exterior antenna (Model:GA25MCX)is great too and allows you to place the c330 any place in your vehicle. It also allows you to take it inside your home and enter all of your favourites and be "live" on the air at the same time. Pretty slick.

The device works "right of the box" as advertised! Excellent product. The device powers up rapidly and calculates your route in 10-15 seconds. I intentionally made a wrong turn and the device responded by voice promt that I was off the route and imediately recalculated new route. Recalculation took approximately 6 - 10 seconds. The device daylight screen will wash out in bright sunlight; however, a slight angle adjustment corrects the problem.

Cons: I wish this version had the text-to-speech feature that is coming out on the StreetPilot 340 model...text-to-speech announces the upcoming Street Name at your turn. (Note: on the C330, the street name is displayed across the top of the display)

Again, great device!

The Garmin C330 works right out of the box from the store I bought it from. The screen froze after 1 hour of searching for address. The unit was exchanged that same afternoon and was deemed unrepairable. The biggest problem with the unit was a complete wash out of the screen in bright sunlight. Address for the area I lived was at least 2 years old. Otherwise , the direction given was clear with voice prompt given well ahead of the turn.

Tried to buy a c330 but found that my street is not in the unit. The street has been here for 45 years and is about 1 mile long. Magellan Roadmate does have my street but I prefer the Garmin size and mount.

Am totally sold on this GPS (garmin-C-330)so easy to use--so accurate--makes going to an unfamiliar city a snap--on a recent trip from plymouth, mi to cincinnati,oh was amazed at the detail of the entire route and its endless source of data anywhere along the route--A solid 10. Charles B

Amzing device. Like everyone says--it is extremely intuitive and very easy to use. You dont need the instructions at all. I use Sunoco Ultra 94 gas---its so nice to be ANYWHERE and know exactly where the closest sunoco is. Also extremely useful is the ATM icon. Need a TD, BMO, CIBC bank--its a few clicks away. I am 110% satisfied with the unit. Its does have a few shortcomings. #1-Although the database is extensive(its not 100%). That said: you'll only notice that something is not in the database if you have EXTENSIVE knowledge of an area(like if you live there). For example--it didnt know that there is an ATM inside the corner store. In other words it doesnt know as much as you do about where you live, but it knows 1000000 times what you know about someplace youve never been. #2--In shortest distance mode--It has NO IDEA that a particular intersection has a long light. It just takes you down the shortest route(even if its much longer. It also isnt aware of streets that have variable Left/right turn times. #3--no review I read spoke about this, and I havent had any problems---buuut--the guy at the store told me that the only reason these units come back is because of broken touchscreen. Perhaps he was trying to sell me an extended warranty. The touchscreen on my PALM has lasted 3 years, so Im not sure if the salesman was telling the truth. #4--This last one is very minor pet peeve of mine. When you input and adresses, it asks you for the city every time. So if you are entering multiple addys in the same area--you have to type the city name again. It would be nice if it just reverted to the previous city and gave you an option to change city. VEry minor programing thing but it something that bugged me.

As far as postives---The "time to arival" that is listed on the bottom is EXTREMELY accurate. I mean within 2-4 mins. The trip computer is very useful. I ve never had a GPS before--but It didnt seem to take long to acuire satilliteswhen you first turn it on(like 1-2 mins tops). Recalculating your route is a 30 sec tops operation. The screen may seem small in the store compared to factory installed systems--but you have to remember that factory systems are usually on the centre console and one must take their eye off the road to see the screen--thus they have to be bigger. The Garmin on the other hand, is mounted on the windshield at eye/road level. You can see it with youre periferal vision perfectly. The battery last FOREVER. All in all---the unit is very close to perfect.

WOW! wOW! I have had my C330 for about 3 weeks, and I am blown away! The software folks at Garmin and other GPS scientists have greatly improved the operation of this miracle. I have used all of its features and tested its ability to recover and reroute, etc., and it passed every test. The future is here right now, buy one and see. (And GPScity's price and service are the best you can find).

Once again, the United States has developed a magnificant navigation capability that will assist all mankind, and then freely gave it away to the whole world. Love the USA.
