I purchased the i3 in Dec. 2005. This was based numerous reviews from both this side of the Atlantic and the UK. I was skeptical on the small size of the screen prior to purchasing but have no complaints with it.Cons so far are two things. Garmin notes battery life to be up to 6 hours. So far, alkaline batteries are shot in 2 hours and rechargable Ni-MH 2300mhr units are gone in 4 hours. Problem two which is much more serious is the loss of satellite reception. The unit is on the dash of a 2004 Chev. Impala with good view of the sky. Unless proven wrong, I believe that this is a plain windscreen with nothing more than the normal tinting at the top. I have contacted Garmin about the loss of satellite reception and they gave me specific directions on resetting the unit. Basically, turn unit off and then press all three front controls together. Answer a couple of questions and go forward. The unit is then to be left outside in full view of the sky for a minimum of 20 minutes. Garmin said that if the unit still dropped satellite reception then take it back to my dealer and have it replaced. The unit did work for several days then dropped reception again. Replacement was made and the replacement has done exactly the same thing! This then prompted me to look up i3 reviews and it does seem that I am not the only one with satellite reception problems. I have also two Garmin 18s as well as a Magellan Meridian Marine unit. None of these units have ever shown problems as described above.(All these units have been in the same location as the i3) I am now either contemplating an external antenna which puts the overall price of an otherwise excellent concept up substancially or upgrading to the Garmin c320. The latter does not seem to have reception problems in its reviews. I live on the east coast of Canada. I am not aware that I might be in a weak zone for reception.

I would like to follow up my first comments on the Garmin i3. I did purchase the model 25 Garmin antenna. This unit was placed as far forward as possible against the windscreen of the 2004 Impala. While reception did improve, drop out of satellites did continue. This second unit has since been returned for refund. My overall impression of the i3 while it is working, is that it is most desirable GPS. However, Garmin has failed in my inquiries to tell me why these units are failing to maintain satellite reception 100% of the time. Or am I looking in the wrong direction for assistance? Is the windschield the problem in an Impala? (I didn't think that the Impalas WS was on a par with more expensive windows of BMWs etc). I have faith in Garmin. I kept the external antenna! This is to put on another Garmin possibly the 2610 if it has good reviews! And if someone in the meantime could explain the satellite reception dropping on the i3 and how to rectify it, I would rebuy!
