TOPO 24K
I have only used this product once, and only for testing it. I have not had time to take it "on the road" as yet, but the visual on my GPS is really good ande clear.

NEAT TOPO MAPPING
A must for any hiker navigating the backcountry in California with a Garmin GPS Oregon or Dakota. The topos were very detailed, even had restaurant, gas station, etc. information.

TERRIBLE
Pros: small size Cons: crashing, hard to read shading, spendy, incomplete
Used extensively with a Nuvi 5000. Also used 2 other maps in the series.
First, why don't they just call it "the CA and NV map" instead of "west"? And why not PRINT the states it covers on the SD card? if you have sereral cards it is easy to mix them up.
More seriously, this map will crash the unit every few min. I just hangs. Not so with the other maps in the series which are just bad, but don't actually crash anything. The maps are incomplete (many sign-posted dirt roads do not appear), hard to read on this unit and expensive. Maybe they work better on a Garmin Oregon but this map on a brand new Nuvi 5000 it is absolutely unworkable. Beware

GOOD TOPO
Pros: topo + highway + interests. comes on microsd. Cons: slow to redraw (maybe my unit)
I viewed these maps on a Garmin Legend HcX. As such, I was unable to see the 3-D shading and other features that more expensive units display. However, I have been pleased with the detail on these maps. I have been snowshoeing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling in the backcountry with these maps and I never felt lost or uncertain about my route. The locations of interest and highway routing aren't that great - in this economy in a mountain town a lot of the business no longer exist where indicated, and at one time it pointed me North on 395 to go to Mammoth mountain which is South of here. That last part could be my GPS unit or could be the map. I don't know. Overall, the maps are great and provide very good detail. I'm interested in exploring geocaching a bit more.

WONDERFUL PRODUCT !
Pros: detailed, convenient, reasonable price Cons: none
For the first time Garmin is beginning to roll out 24K Topo maps on very convenient microSD cards. ( includes SD card adapter ) No computer needed, just put it in your unit and go. No fuss, no muss !
All I can say is it is about time !
They are starting with the western states and going east. If your state is not covered yet, please be patient. They are all coming.
This is the highest level of mapping detail available for your Garmin unit. They work best on the new Colorado and Oregon series units as you will see see 3-D views and color terrain shading on these units only. Very Nice !!
These are a must have for hikers, geocachers and any outdoor enthusiasts.
Highly recommended !!
