I was weighing the difference between getting a GPS with the maps pre-loaded. Upon reading a review that suggested against it, I bought the DVD. Awesome advice, I like the fact that I don't have to have all of Canada maps slowing down the GPS processor.

SUPER TOPO DETAILS
Pros: good topo details, 3d view, planning Cons: takes a while to install, but this is nothing
well, I've seen some people complaining about details on the ATV roads and other backcountry roads. I don't really care, I never walk a road and always look for the best way up the mountain. The topo map is super detailed and pairing it with Basecamp was a good move. The 3D view and the ability to "walk around" your objective is awesome in planning a route. I heard people saying the maps are large.... unless you fly you will never cover in your life the surface you can stock in this unit. I have installed maps for whole AB and BC and I used 1/3 of the memory. Planning a route is simple and easy. Deleting waypoints was trickier, but after you figure it out it is really easy. I have installed on a Mac and it works great. It took a while till I finished with all the plugins, updates and all the rest, but once installed is painless. Reading the reviews I learnt that it is way better to go with the 62s and a topo map, than with the 62st (which includes a topo map, but older...)

Cons: note as detailed as v2 for off roading

MAPS TOO LARGE FOR OLDER UNITS
Pros: the maps are better than the rino 120 default Cons: very few of the maps will fit in an older gps.
Unfortunately many of the maps and most on the maps close to where I live are larger than 8 MB which means that they won't fit in a Rino 120. There is no hint of this problem on Garmin's website.
Garmin really drops the ball here. They've gone to a lot of trouble so that you can preview the maps on their website, but take no care at all to warn you that the maps may be useless to you. Their response to this issue seems to be "buy a newer GPS".

GREAT UPGRADE TO THE STANDARD BASE MAP
Pros: good detail Cons: not completely up to date with new off ramps, etc.
I am fairly impressed with this map. It has even shown campground roads and various other trails. The only thing that has not impressed is some of the auto routing that has taken me down trails when other better routes are available. Otherwise a great product with good detail.

BOPS ALL OVER
Pros: zip thus far Cons: seems a pain
Haven't used this map much but if you are thinking of buying it maybe try someone's unit that's loaded with it. Seems to bop all over the place...calls rivers in my area small lakes.. rivers that were named on my old unit are simply called streams or other water...has place names that I've never heard before..used to be able to scroll across Canada with ease but with this map every time you reach screen edge it blanks out to recalibrate...sometimes makes a big jump off course...colour kinda sucks to me so far...am using a Legend HCx...I miss my Venture Cx...basically the same but something just seems to be lacking...have to play more but just seems not worth the effort...at this point I just want to find my old maps...oh yeah the basecamp worked for a bit the then screwed up...maybe cause I use a mac.. not sure...will probably just scrap it all....

GREAT TOPO
Pros: makes the mapping gps a more useful tool.
The main reason I bought this product was for ATVing. With the Topo Canada underlay, you can see how close you are to roads etc. for emergency purposes. In rural environments, that information can save your life. The detail is very good and Basecamp allows you to see and plan routes in a more meaningful way.

CANADA VERSION 4
I HAD TO BUY this map because the previous two maps I bought (BC South, and BC north and Yukon) came on a chip. Their maps showed up well on the GPS, but I could not download and print the contours, only my waypoints and tracks!
It is only maps that come to you on a disk that you can use to download and print the contours.
Now I can print contours with Canada 4, BUT the maps are not as sophisticated as the 2 BC maps I can't download.

GOOD INFORMATION
Pros: easy to use Cons: will only down load 4 gb to my gps micro sd (8gb)
The maps suit my purpose they are used for both off-road and on-road. There is some detail such as logging roads which is lacking. These roads are showing on old maps that I have. There are also things showing on this map that are not showing on others. There is a dam showing on the map in an area that I am familiar with , that I didn't realize was there, nor have heard anyone else mention it.

GOOD TPO MAP
Pros: detail and trails
Can be used for routing as well however does not discriminate between trails and road in finding directions (It tries to send me down some - not all - walking paths by car) However pretty good and for the walker/hiker much more detail than city maps offer. All would be good if in the gps unit or in basecamp I could give the trails different weights (times/speed). Its not a downside but be aware that the entire map is quite large and will not fit on a 4 GB card - best to do just regions as needed (like province size).

Cons: they simply do not care about the customer
Garmin could be a lot better company. their products and attitude is very propietary (pushing you to their inferior products) If you purchase a GPS you will have to pay for an additional product to use it. like memory cards (locked) and disks for any decent maps. However there are not the extras and details like trails camp sites logging roads or even lake depth contour maps that are available and so useful from other sources. Trying to get them to help you understand the product and any ways make use of extras is like pulling teeth They won't help You

GOOD TOPOGRAPHIC MAPPING
This is an improvement over version 2.0. Some of the location errors (that I was aware of) have been corrected and it is nice to see that the forested areas have been coloured green, Especially nice, is the 3D effect which shows up in hilly terrain. With regard to the Services I wouldn't put too much faith in their location and many are no longer in business. However all in all, this is a good product, and if you are considering of updating from v.2 to v.4, go for it.

This latest version still lacks detail in this area of Canada. One key point I would like to point out is that the Trans Canada Trail system is not showing on the maps. I have the 3790T and had a little bit of trouble with the Basecamp (seems very outdated, with little info how to use, as well as slow, etc) If your comfortable with computers and new programs you will not have any trouble with the software moving your maps to your GPS. GREAT PRICE, GOOD PRODUCT, POOR INFORMATION.
Pros: works well for what it does. Cons: garmin's typical problem, poor instructions.
I bought the Garmin Topographic Canada DVD from GPS City at a great price. It came in the mail in a few days, very good. Using it, it performs well as a program should. The only complaint as with all Garmin products, is the documentation that is available for it. Poor at best. If somewhere in the minimal instructions (online or elsewhere), could they find the space to print the minimum requirements of the computer you wish to install it on. That would have saved a lot of headaches and the added expense of upgrading my video card to make it run!

If you travel around the country it is nice to have such extensive coverage in one product, although a lot of the data is outdated and the level of detail is pretty coarse. Pros: relatively easy and intuitive user interface. Cons: some mapping data missing.
Software installation was relatively easy as well as loading selected cartography to my GPS 76 CS. I was disappointed that Glennifer Lake Ab (created by the Dickson Dam in 1983) is not shown. Other reviewers have noted missing elements but Garmin knows about it. The Map Source Manual Introduction states that virtually ALL mapsource products will have errors. Pros: works well Cons: poor instructions, maps out of date
I installed this in Vista and had difficulty loading the maps into my Oregon 450. The written instructions were poor. The instructions also didn't mention that the program "Mapinstall" had been loaded onto my computer. There was no desktop icon for it, and it is an essential part of the process. It would be a real feature if Garmin would put as much effort into providing proper instructions for their products as they do to implementing software locks on them. Once I got it working it worked well except of course the maps are quite dated.

Then came my first computerized topos (OSX) which were limited, so I was apprehensive with spending this much money without a chance to check them out. I shouldn't have been. NEED BETTER MAPS
Pros: the best gps maps available Cons: still pretty weak.
Obviously you can't put all of Canada on a single DVD at a scale useful for walking or canoeing. Especially in areas remote from highways = most of Canada. If the mapping is comparable to 1:50,000 mapping the comparison shows the weakness of Garmin's offering. But there is nothing better available. I hope Garmin will continue it's move to simplifying use of custom maps to the point that scanned topo maps can be installed.

GREAT MAPPING TOOL
Pros: covers all of canada, very detailed, accurate
Garmin Topographic Canada DVD with Basecamp includes detailed topographical maps for all of Canada. This includes all city streets, forestry roads, small streams, power lines, .... I've found a few errors, but on the whole, it is very accurate. Maps use colour and contour shading. A program called Basecamp displays the map. By default, Basecamp displays very little detail, so be sure to set the detail level to 'high' to see all the contour lines and map details. I use the maps to plan back-country trips and on my gps in unfamiliar cities.

I've had a chance to use this "supposedly" newer software (yeah right). You'd be better off using a regular map and compass (a lot cheaper). At least, if you use a topographic map printed in 2001, well you know to expect anything to show on the map before the printed date.
Now, with this software, highways, roads and streets that were built 4 years ago (yes, 4 years ago) are stil not showing on this joke.. huh.. I mean software!
And thank God I used the software for free, otherwise I would have been pretty pissed of wasting over $100 for this. Not worth looking at it even, not until Garmin wakes up and delivers something reliable and accurate (for a change).
And please, Garmin, have the courtesy to provide a user's manual with your next "farce" would ya?

MIXED REVIEW
Pros: additional detail, spot heights, geocoding Cons: contour intervals, road names, 3d software
I had a chance to use this new version of topo Canada in Northern Ontario while moose hunting and also for general use in Eastern Ontario. I am also use my gps76cs for Geographic Info Systems (GIS).
I found that in the area of Northern Ontario and Eastern Ontario that the road names reflect the old township names and not the new township and county roads. This makes it confusing as you have to interpolate the names to what the actual signs say.
I found that the road center line seems to be more accurate the majority of the time however strays when you are on a winding road.
I like the new spot heights, and geocoding along roadways. There seems to be more detail of features in Eastern Ontario. Contours could have a smaller interval as in Eastern Ontario the altitude changes are relatively small.
I had a problem showing the new mapping software on Mapsource. I downloaded the latest version from the site but it still didn't show. I contacted Garmin support and they provided a link to a newer version of mapsource which resolved the problem.
I initially was able to use the 3d feature of basecamp from the CD on my computer but decided to download the software upgrade from Garmin. After installing the update, the 3d feature did not work as an error indicating my video card did not support the product. This was mentioned in previous reviews. I will not be buying a new computer/video card to resolve the problem as there is no driver update for my 4 year old card. I don't think the developers took the user community's hardware when delveloping the product.

BASECAMP IS JUNK
Pros: updated roads. good on the gps Cons: hard program to use on the computer
The maps are good but basecamp is junk. It is very hard to work with and always get errors. Mapsource is a better program but the v4 has more roads and trails.

A GOOD TOPOGRAPHIC MAPPING

TOPOGRAPHIC CANADA WITH BASEMAP
Pros: shading, street numbers added, services added Cons: many errors, roads not updated, basecamp crude
Compared to the earlier version, the new shading is a big improvement and now street numbers and more services have been added. In my area, Newfoundland, many of the highways have been updated and more streets and rural road including some trails are now shown. However, the large number of obvious errors eliminates any confidence in the information. Highways that have long existed and are shown on City Navigator for several releases are still not shown. Worse, there are a huge number of address errors, some very obvious, that should have been caught. In some cases the street numbers have been inverted so that the high numbers appear where the low ones should be. Consequently, much of the new services information in my area is incorrect because it is shown in the wrong place. Basecamp is crude and very poor in comparison with Mapsource. Mapsource should have been included in the release instead of Basecamp as Topographic Canada did not merge with my older version of Mapsource and I had to download a 56 MB upgrade. This product isn't up to Garmin's standards. It was created by a local Canadian company, DMTI, and in my experience, this latest release is less accurate than their earlier version. If you have the earlier version don't waste your money on this unless you just have to have the shading... which is visible only on my PC, not on either of my GPS units.

DOESN'T WORK WITH 8MB LEGEND
Pros: i guess it includes dems and will do 3-d Cons: file sizes too large, selections should be smaller
I had to return this and get an earlier version as I couldn't download any maps to my original Legend - the files were all too big. I am lucky that the old version could be found - Garmin doesn't sell it (although retailers still sell the original Legend.)

TOPO CANADA V. 4
Pros: quality of mapping is great! Cons: basecamp less useful than advertised
I really appreciate the quality of the topo mapping, the detail and shading, and the fact that it seems to incorporate street addresses, Points of Interest (Burger Kings, Petrocans et al.), park boundaries, and other items I used to have to go to MetroGuide to find. I remain a bit mystified about Base Camp, though, haven't found that terribly useful, maybe I need to play further. I perhaps naively assumed it was like a different MapSource, capable of communicating interactively with the GPSr. However, I have imported some files from MapSource into Base Camp and viewed them there, and via Google Earth, all works well...glad to see the V. 4 maps showing up as another map base option in my MapSource.

TOPO CANADA
Pros: good as available Cons: should be in separate sections
This item recplace my old ver 1 copy of Topo Canada which had some problems. It has the newer graphicly enhanced views however the areas I frequent had no new data to show any updating of the maps. The newer format of having the whole of Canada on one disc instead of four (4) different regions as before, I feel is a step backward. I cannot just have the section I want without loading the whole thing. I see why there are many sellers of separated versions on the internet. Too bad there is not a help section with table of contents, that lists the files needed by areas of the country, then you can open and copy only what you need and not clutter up the system with uneeded data.

Cons: no operating booklet
very disappointed!!!! No booklet of instructions! as there was with my GPS or previous versions of Topo maps. Wasted three days trying to get to work properly, even using the help menu. I finally called garmin, spoke to Scott who was very helpful, but there are always too many questions to ask one individual. Still do not know answers to all my questions and am to embarrassed to call Garmin back. There should & needs to be a booklet explaining Topo 4 and basecamp maps that you always have questions on!

TOPO AND OREGON - A PERFECT MATCH!
Pros: 3d views, maps are very detailed, yet easy to use Cons: none
I recently added Garmin Topo to my new Oregon. Yesterday I was riding along on my motorcycle when I went into some mountains and was really surprised and awed by the gps display - that Topo information adds so much more to the Oregon.
I'm used to using a 60CSx and the combination of the Oregon and the new Topo maps has made a huge difference to my gps experience.
The Oregon has a higher resolution display than the 60, so the Topo information is very easy to see and use. The 3D view is especially fascinating!
Well worth buying both Topo and the Oregon!

GARMIN TOPO CANADA DVD.
Pros: shading Cons: poor installation instructions.
I found the installation very difficult and spent a huge amount of time on it. I still don't have 3D viewing as I can't find how to download Open GL 1.3. There were poor instructions and it was not clear to an only moderately computer literate person what was happening or what to do next. A written booklet would have been nice. I'm not sure the maps are much better than my previous version though some local errors have been corrected. I do like the shading, but need to work with it more. Also, I thought that having the maps on several CDs was better than stuffing the whole country into my computer, as most of us are only going to use two or three areas.

SAME OF THE OLD STUFF
Pros: built in metro guide Cons: maps not updated & 3d maps not working in gps
Well I was disappointed with the V.4, although it is a Topo maps many roads built right after V.2 were not added, I would have preferred to see more of the newer roads then added shade of green. 3D feature on Oregon/Colorado/Dakota not that great The only feature interesting is it include Metro guide. As for the Base Camp program, it is only a revise version of Mapsource. I give it a 4 rating only because if someone never had maps and need a set it is good.

NEW VERSION TOPO CANADA
I replaced the older version of Topo Canada with this one. I do not see any difference in the quality of maps or map details on my 378c vs v2. (There must be more detail because I could not download as many maps as the older version.) Also the software to download to the gps has changed and does not have any instructions, so you are on your own to figure it out - which wasn't difficult - but if this was your first experience with a gps, memory card and DVD software, you might find it frustrating.

This software is a HUGE improvement over the Topo Canada CD (v.2). Many of the outdated maps have been updated to include such things as new roads, infrastructure, etc. Also, the DVD includes POI, which are new the Topo software. I previously had to swap the Topo software with the City Navigator if I wanted more detailed information and POI. Completely worth the extra expense.

Pros: dem and 3d shading is nice
I bought this product because of the DEM and shading avalable on my Oregon. I find it to be very good in my area (victoria).
As was mentioned in earlier reviews it seems to have MG V5 as the base, with the DEM added.
I find the maps to be very close to the Canadian Gov't paper maps in topographic detail.

CANADA TOPO - GOOD BUT COULD BE IMPROVED.
Pros: is an essential addition to the base map. Cons: not detailed enough re trails and roads.
This is my first experience of using such a map. My main criticism would be that I did not know how big a memory card I would need to store the whole map. I bought a 2GByte card which will take about half of the map and is therefore O.K. - I can put the other half on another card. Some guidance would be useful. I also found that some roads around Jasper / Maligne Lake AB were not shown on this map. So there is a lack of detail. On the description on the web-site it was not clear how much city detail there would be versus real topographical (back country stuff / contour lines)info.

RIDICULOUS MAP DIVISIONS.
Canada is divided into grids, regardless of density of information: makes the southern ontario map large, doesn't fit on some internal hard drive GPS units. Map itself is fine, though it could use some more contour lines to make it more precise.

Pros: 3d shading, routable Cons: cannot load entire country into gps
While not as high resolution as the GPS Quebec maps of Ontario, this product does a very good job at identifying terrain changes and waterways. Map is routable and better than City Navigator in a few places. 3D shading works well on my Colorado.
Size of the map product means you cannot load the entire country at once, as it exceeds 4GB.
