220 EUROPE MODEL - NOT GOOD ENOUGH

Pros: ok overall gps
Cons: they need to improve it alot

I have used the 220 for some months now and im not impressed with it. It is too expensive compared to what you get in the end.

Waterproof, yes tested during 2 hours of heavy rain and it worked well. However im not a fan of the cable slot- protector (rubber) that can fall off in your pocket, and then you can't protect the slot. That is stupid. It does come with cables for the batery (bike), which is great, although the small foam protector (against water) at the end of the cable can't handle rough treatment so be aware of that. The map features are ok, and display what you'll need. The general menu set up needs a more intuitive approach though. The gps finds most destinations, but be aware of the fact that not all adresses are stored in the memory of the map. That can be critical if you go outside urban areas where that will occure more often. Some features like the find gasstation is great because you will need that in a heart beat on a bike. Also if you decide to take another route, the gps quickly recalculates another route for you.. One thing which is not good enough is the offramp indicator. It indicates what offramp you'll ned to take, but it should display it with bigger letters.. NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

They say that you can operate it with gloves: no way, unless you have very small fingers..

Overall ok gps, but not that impressive.

GARMIN ZUMO: SAFETY ITEM!

Pros: true 8 hr battery life, easy clear operation

Everyone who has used a GPS for navigating while driving a car knows how well they work, well I bought the Zumo 220 for my bike and what has impressed me immediately was how it made the ride Safer! Instead of constantly searching for the street signs, I could pay complete attention to the ride, occasionally glance at the Zumo, easily take in the lane to be in and how far to the next turn. I could stream with the flow of traffic without having to do the slow down at corners to try to find street signs hidden behind a truck or tree, etc. Mark it: a must have safety item!

VERY GOOD WITH A FEW MINOR ANNOYANCES

Pros: everything's included, no route recalculation mode
Cons: custom route setup could be easier, reboot issue

Debated between the Nuvi 550 and Zumo 220 for a long time and went with the 220 in the end dispite the big price difference. The 220 included everything I needed so I didn't have to add any accessories: car and motorcycle mounts, motorcycle wiring kit, car power kit, and MapSource software. The price difference narrows if you buy the 550 and some of the accessories separate. The 220 also has some software upgrades over the 550. The only one I really like and use is the ability to turn off automatic route recalculation. This is really nice if you setup your routes and don't want the GPS to recalculate if you take a short diversion. I have tried it both ways and prefer to turn off recalculation for my custome motorcycle routes.

Almost returned the unit. GPSCity.com was very accomadating! After an extra couple of calls to Garmin support I decided to keep it. The issue: when setting up a security PIN and home location the unit goes into an infinite reboot loop when I plug it into my computer. Turn off the PIN and home location and it works fine. Took a while to stumble onto this fix! I would hope Garmin will fix the bug, but am willing to live with it if they don't. I've seen some others with this issue but I am not sure they have stumbled onto the "fix". One review I read said he had exchanged is unit with Garmin under warranty and it still had the problem. I don't think it is hardware defect. I think it is a sofware bug.

One other frustration. I have not totaly got the knack of programming custom routes in MapSource. Takes some experinmentation to get it right. For the most part I am able to setup custom routes and get them into the GPS. Every once in a while my custom loop gets messed up and the way points get lost. I have better luck when adding a lot of way points at intersections along the way. I have tried entering custom routes with MapQuest and Google maps as well. Can't seem to consistently force specific routes with either.

ZUMO 220-PROS & CONS

Pros: fast, clear, easy to read in the sun, accurate.
Cons: poor instructions

The 220 is a very good unit that does what it's supposed to do. I would seriously consider the Nuvi 550 also. Unlike the Nuvi, The 220 has bluetooth capability and lane assistance. In my opinion these features alone are not worth the considerable difference in price. But,to each his (or her) own. The 220 does not have all the whistles and bells of the more expensive Zumos. It offers basic navigation with some nice features to store and manage routes, and to help you find food, gas, hospitals etc. quickly. It works well on my bikes and in our cars. I'm happy with it.

What I am not happy with is the fragmented, disjointed and generally poor online (only) instructions that come with the unit and the MapSource software that is included with the 220. Understanding how all of this works together and getting it up and running requires a good deal of time and a lot of patience. It also required a couple of calls to Garmin's toll free number.

Here's one example (there are more) of what I'm talking about. I wanted to import a MapSource created route to the 220 from my desktop. I followed a few simple steps, and sent the route, but could not find it on the 220. Nothing in the MapSource or 220 instructions even mentioned how to do this. A phone call to Garmin got the answer (it's not straightforward), and the rep. acknowledged that the steps should have been included in the instructions-- somewhere. Garmin makes a nice GPS, but their instructions are very poor. So,be prepared, have patience, and allow yourself plenty of time.

GOOD BUY FOR A MOTORCYCLE GPS

Pros: compact design, ease of programing, priced right

Most Motorcycle GPS systems are very expensive in comparison to a Car GPS. The Zumo 220 is priced right. Its size is perfect also as you do not want a large screen overtaking some of the gauges on the motorcycle. My 220 got us to each programed location and once we stopped it helped us to locate eating establishments, gas, hotels and much more. Some of the riders I ride with are considering the Zumo 220 also.

ZUMO 220

Pros: was good till i dealt with garmin
Cons: as above

I have been a Garmin user for the last 10 years and was happy with my last Purchase for 10 months. Then the freezing of the unit started and I contacted Support, the conclusion was to send it to the repair shop in Laval Quebec. They sent me a used replacement which I received 4 days ago, same problem the unit freezes, I contacted Support again and after dealing with a person that does not like her job. I was told again to send it to the repair shop in Laval. An option which I do not agree with, the summer is here aand I need it, WHY DO THEY NOT SEND ME A NEW ONE. P.S. The shipping cost for the unit both times were to me.

if this does not bring me an phone call from Garmin, I will go to an other company, I have an account with Garmin, so I am easy to find

GARMIN ZUMO 220

Pros: cost
Cons: still not that easy to operate with gloves.

Very good GPS. Easy to instal. Difficult to operate with gloves, even thin one. Not recommended to be adjusted while riding. If you are wearing a full face helmet, you can not hear the voice sound. Better to get bluetooth system. Should be equipted with a cut-off switch for the power cable. This would eliminate the need to dis-connect the GPS Unit everytime you stop for awhile.

A FEW ISSUES WITH THE DEVICE AT PRESENT

Pros: waterproof, bluetooth
Cons: can't pair headset to gps and cell phone too

1> I sold my Nuvi 500 and bought the Zumo 220 so that I could have bluetooth audio.

The problem is that the GPS connects as a BT Cell Phone and not a BT Audio device. This means I can't connect my bluetooth cell phone to my Cardo Scala Rider G4 headset and make phone calls if the headset is paired to the GPS. My confirmation of the GPS's connection type was made by connecting the GPS to my Sony bluetooth radio no sound plays if I have the radio set for BT Audio, only for BT Cell Ph.

Cardo weighed in on the matter and said: When using the Garmin Zumo 220 with our headsets you will not be able to have any other bluetooth connections paired to the G4 or you will contunue to have connection issues. This GPS will not allow a headset and phone to have parallel connections that will allow all devices to communicate.

2> I wanted to use the GTM 25 FM Traffic adapter with the unit and use the GTM 25's USB plug instead of the hardwired plug that came with the cradle.

You can't do this because the GTM 25's USB plug is longer. The design of the cradle is such that there is a pocket to press on the end of the USB connector, holding this in. The standard one fits the traffic one does not. So, you have a motorcycle GPS which supports traffic, but not on a motorcycle. I may try one of my Nuvi 500 holders which have an opening for the USB connector.

3> I bought this GPS because it has large letters for typing names.

You select which portion of the alphabet you want to see and you get a handful of large letters. The problem is the erase button in the upper right corner. It is not large. Good luck trying to press it with large gloves on. No typos allowed.

GOOD MOTORCYCLE GPS

Just got back from a 3200 mi road trip and over all the unit worked well. Bad thing is when you chose the shortest route it does that quite literally. I was on I94/I90 as the shortest route to St Paul and it took me off and sent me through the town of Lake Delton and Wisconsin Dells all to save 1/2 mile. It would be nice if they could make the calculation take you around cities using the by passes. Other than that it worked quite well. I also learned that to preserve battery life it is best to discontinue the route and to shut off the unit if it indicates that you will be on a road for over 10 miles. I got through a 14 hour long ride (850 mi) on just one battery. Granted it would be better to have the power cable hooked up but if you can't have it done the battery will last all day if used judiciously.

ZUMO 220 DELIVERS WHAT IT SAYS IT DOES

Pros: works like they say it does, easy installation
Cons: forget about the speaker, might try bluetooth

I am pretty happy with this unit. It installed on the bike ('08 Electra Glide Ultra) with no problems, and the screws fit the clutch mount so it looks ok. Navigation wise, the 220 works well on the bike getting you there. I tried it on several of the routes I know well and then did some intentional mis-turns, etc. It re-calculates well, and fairly quickly. The lane assist is very good to have and sets you up for easy off of, or onto, freeway runs. Even at the loudest level the speaker for the voice directions won't be heard over your pipes. I have stock, so if your are running louder pipes - forget about it. Transferred nicely to use in the car, very simple. I am very satisfied with the Zumo 220
