CHEAP PRICE AND QUALITY.
Pros: cheap, thin wire Cons: poor construction
Though the price is a touch cheaper than what Garmin offers, I decided to go with this not only because it came in a kit, but thought there shouldn't be much of a difference in quality given it's only a wire, right?
This power cable was returned for the Garmin power cable because it broke after a day. Some of the solders came loose inside resulting in some bad connections which ultimately resulted in a short. If you are looking at this, perhaps spend the extra buck and get the Garmin cable. It's super durable and very robust.

CABLE WORKS AFTER ADJUSTMENT
Cons: not made for tom tom 330x
I have the tom tom 330x, the cable wire comes off the plug in the wrong direction for my gps, I had to cut the plastic off close to the plug on the back side, quite easily done with a knife, then put a wire around the back and around the cable to ensure the cable would not come out because it does not go in all the way. You cannot see the wire I put on it, and made a few good trips without it coming out. But would have been alot easier if the wire came staight off the plug for my model. I had to adjust it as I didn,t have time to wait for another one. Hope this helps, Jamey

SIMPLE, EFFECTIVE CABLE
Pros: durable, easy to install Cons: bare wires are teeny tiny
I have had problems with the standard Garmin cigarette-lighter power cables when used on a motorcycle. It's hard to get a good socket fit and vibration always seems to wreak havoc with the connection. The cable works great and has been durable. The cables are long enough that you can connect the bare wires to the tail light circuit (sometimes the only convenient place to get switched power on a sportbike) and still have enough to mount your GPS on the handlebars. Provides enough power for a Nuvi 1390. No problems with it going into "charge only" mode.

POOR QUALITY. NOT DURABLE
Pros: good concept ruined by poor build Cons: poor quality all around
Previous reviews had warned me that the internal components were fragile and they were right. Despite encasing the internals with hot glue, the wire leads are so thin that a few twists and turns and the power became intermittent. Requires constant wire wiggling to get power through.

TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE
Pros: good gps - but cant operate with cable Cons: no solution !
I just purchased a new Nuvi from you and this cable. The cable came with a disclaimer note that mentions some GPS units will not work properly as they just go into the "CHARGE MODE".... After hard wiring the cable properly and mounting my new GPS it will not work with the cable. Constantly reboots and always ends up in "CHARGE MODE"- no visible map. If I unplug from cable the GPS works great..... The cable "disclaimer note" also gives a phone number. When I called Gilsson, they said this cable will not work with this GPS as there is some form of voltage problem and no other cable exists...They said buy a cigarette charger cable. I am very unhappy about this. When I called your CS they said mail it back and they'll send another and know nothing about this problem or the "disclaimer note" that is packaged with the faulty cable.

Pros: easy to use. Cons: lose the traffic function
This cable works great with my 1490LMT except for the fact you lose the Traffic feature. It is easy to wire up especially through a small gap in the dash. I did not realize the Traffic feature would be lost with this cable. I need to find another GTM 26 cable to hard wire to the fusebox. GILSSON DIRECT WIRE
Pros: good so far. Cons: power drain on battery
Just installed it on my BMW motorcycle. Went in easily enough and powered up my GPS no problem. After installing it I used a good quality ammeter to check the draw of the unit. Plugged into the GPS unit with the GPS off it draws about 0.45A and with the GPS unplugged it still draws 0.3A just for the LED and the circuitry in the voltage regulator built into the cord. At first I had it connected directly to the battery but am going to change it to a power source through the ignition. If left over a longer period of time the unit will drain your battery. Otherwise, so far so good.

FRIED MY GPS
Although they say that it is impossible, my mechanics tester proved that 12 volts went through the wire instead of only 5 volts being allowed and the end result is that it burned out my gps and according to garmin it is non-repairable. and gps city will not stand behind the product they sell and told me to go after gilsson. they did however offer my money back on the cable.
they also informed me that they sell a garmin cable which is a much better quality product and I have had it installed on the new gps that I had to pay for and it seems to be working well.

Bought this during the winter months cause my wife bought me a Nuvi 550 for Xmas. FINALLY installed it today and went for a quick boot around. Before installing it I read the most recent reviews of the cable and they didn't sound good.
When I returned home (the unit/cable worked great on the road) I pulled into my garage, unplugged the wire and BAMMMM wire connector broke! You guys that complained about it breaking after 4 or 5 times, you are the lucky ones, 1 f'n time!!!!
Piece of junk, now I have to remove my gas tank and all that jazz to remove the broken wire.

POOR DESIGN
Pros: cleaner look because it's hard wired in Cons: difficult to strip wires
Wires coming out of the protective layer were too short to reach where they had to go and stripping off the protective layer was a very tedious job. A lot of extra cable to wrap up as well, c'mon, it's a motorcycle accessory, just how long do you think motorcycles are? Also after the third time I unplugged it from my GPS the metal shield came off, a problem I've noticed other reviewers had as well.

THE GILSSON BARE WIRE POWER CABLE IS POORLY MADE
Cons: poorly manufacturered and lack of customer support
I bought this cable in order to be able to direct wire my Garmin Nuvi 550 into my motorcycle electrical system. I paid the motorcycle dealer a considerable amount of money to get it installed. The second or third time I disconnected it from the GPS, the metal tip that goes into the GPS stayed in the GPS and I was left with a cable with five wires exposed. I contacted Gilsson but they never got back to me. I have since sold the motorcycle so I am not going to pursue this with Gilsson but I would not recommend it to anyone else because of the poor quality of the manufacturing of it and the lack of any response to the message I sent them inquiring about the problem I had.

GILSSON BARE WIRE POWER CABLE FOR NUVI 255WT
Cons: doesn't work with nuvi
This cable was recommended by GPS City for wiring my 255WT to my motorcycle. The 255WT would not go into navigation mode when connected. Instead it would go into USB mode as if it was connected to a computer. The first tech I spoke to at GPS City believed I had a defective cable even though there was no evidence of it and wanted me to send it back. When I refused to waste the shipping cost to send it back until I had solid evidence that a replacement would solve the problem he gave me a toll free number to call Gilsson tech support. Unfortunately the toll free number he gave me only works in the United States and not from Canada so I had to call back to GPS City to see what to do next. The second tech I spoke to at GPS City said that this is a known problem with this cable and therefore GPS City does not recommend it for use with Garmin Nuvi models. ?????? Wish someone would have told the initial salesperson and the first tech about that!! Two out of three who didn't know about something that is well documented in their knowledge base. :(

IT WORKS!
Bike = 2007 Vulcan 900
As other reviews noted, had to take a cutting tool to remove a piece of plastic on the cradle in order to plug into my Garmin 265WT.
There is an available accessory plug (one + & one -) in the headlight housing. Tucked the transformer pack under the speedo housing then zip-tied the wires to the other wires that happen to be running to and fro.
Not sure it will always give me trouble free service. I plugged my Garmin 265WT in recently and was told "assessory not supported". Not sure why but when I unplugged it and plugged back in, the GPS rebooted then worked fine. Only happened once since I got it about 4 weeks ago.

Pros: just what i needed for my bike Cons: would have paid a bit more for a on-off switch
I installed this on my FJR1300, and was happy with the simplicity of design and length of cable included -- nothing more frustrating than buying a power cable that is just a little too short. NOT GOOD FOR DIRECT CONECTION OR DUALSPORT/ADV
Pros: cost Cons: led light and non-tight housing
I had bought garmin cables in the past for all previous GPS installations on my bikes, but made the mistake of buying this to save a few bucks.
The power step down has an LED light so if you direct connect this (so it can run even if the bike/key is off) the LED light is ALLWAYS ON and causes a constant drain to the battery. The power step down is also not waterproof (likely not dust proof or shock proof) like garmins are so should it get wet in a watercrossing it will most likely short. I quetion ho long it will last due to shock and dust as well.

PERFECT SOLUTION
Installed this direct from the battery, routing along OEM wiring harness on my '04 VFR. Fuse box located just infront of the airbox, the wiring on either end was ample and the unit worked perfectly with my TomTom. Kept the unit operating at all times and supplied charge for battery. Really like the 90 degree head, keeing the wire routed to the back and very neat. Fast shipping & just what I needed.

WORKS AS EXPECTED WITH MY NUVI 1490T
Pros: small, works with nuvi1490t, led power indicator Cons: not waterproof, no user accessible fuse
I purchased a Gilsson power adapter as an alternative to adding a cigarette lighter plug and using my existing Nuvi power cord. The purpose is multi-fold, one as an adapter on my small boat, two as an adapter on my motorcycle. Testing on my boat worked great! The adapter works as expected, providing power from my boat battery to my Nuvi 1490T.
When I say small boat, I mean canoes, and kayaks. I use an electric trolling motor on the canoes and just the GPS on the kayaks. On the canoes, I'm using a large deep cycle battery, and on the kayaks I'm using a small 7.2ah security / backup battery. Once connected, the Gilsson turns on my GPS and I'm good for the day.
Pros - 1. There is a wide voltage range the Gilsson works from. I varied from a fully charged battery (12vdc) to completely discharged (10.4vdc), and my GPS didn't revert to its internal battery until I disconnected the Gilsson adapter. 2. The small LED also lets me know the unit has power. 3. The small size and reasonable length of the cables allows me to mount the unit out of site.
Cons - 1. From a waterproof standpoint, the Gilsson case is NOT sealed and could become affected by water. On a motorcycle or boat, I would be sure to mount the unit where it won't get wet. On a kayak, I'll be taking my chances since I may not have many options on preventing moisture from getting into the unit. 2. Connections are 2 bare wires and no user changeable fuse holder. This unit is NOT plug and play in the sense that you will need to be comfortable stripping wires, soldering and/or crimping wires, and for safety, adding a fuse holder. I recommend using heat shrink tubing on the connections.
3. MSN and Traffic subscriptions will NOT work with this power cable. The Nuvi manufacturers power cable has MSN and traffic subscriptions integrated into the cable, so don't expect this feature to work if using the Gilsson adapter.
Recommendations: I would absolutely recommend this unit to friends, I'm purchasing additional units for my motorcycles, and various boats.

GOOD CABLE
Installed this cable for my Garmin 255 prior to our trip. My first cable from a different supplyer would not keep the GPS working! This one did!! The green light is necessary to let one know if there is power through the cord! To determine if power is being delivered to your GPS, disconnect the cable from your GPS while it's ON, it should indicate "external power lost". Also make sure your cable plugin to GPS is completely in!! Make sure your GPS is charged as the cable only produces 1 amp, which only maintains a fully charged internal battery. If your battery is dyingdo as others did or disconnect the GPS. If left long enough the GPS will kill a car battery too!!

GILSSON CABLE FOR TOMTOM ONE 3RD EDITION
Pros: works, only game in town? Cons: straight connector would work better for tomtom
I used this cable to hard wire the TomTom One to my motorcycle. In this application the 90 degree mini USB connector did not fit well with the Ram mount bracket. It did not plug in fully, and would come unplugged with the vibration from riding. I was able to relieve the bracket area around the TomTom port, and the wire works fine now.

NUVI 255W IS IN PC MODE
Pros: none Cons: coesn't work
Due to internal wiring, this cable is not compatible with a lot of Garmin products. Garmin makes some special connections in the mini-USB to make 3rd party stuff problematic. This cable put my 255w in PC mode. It charged ok but could not navigate while connected. Contacted GPS City and they act like they know nothing about it. Still no viable option to hardwire to motorcycle.

GILSSON BARE WIRE POWER CABLE - MOTORCYCLE MOUNTED
Pros: reasonable cost Cons: none at this time
The cable is installed on my motorcycle, connected directly to the battery because the cable has an on-board fuse. It's been working well over the last 300+ miles in powering my Nuvi 1490T. It would be an improvement if the manufacturer constructed the cable ends that tie-into the power source of a thicker gauge of wire. Not flimsy, but thinner than I would like.

The cigar lighter cable that came with my Garmin worked but was ugly, with all the excess cable tie-wrapped to the handlebars. WILL NOT POWER A GARMIN NUVI 255W
Cons: will not power a garmin 255w
I purchased this product to use with my Garmin Nuvi 255W. When I connected the cable to the GPS and the 12 volt system of my vehicle, it puts the GPS into PC mode. It will not power the GPS normally. I had tried a different cable from different supplier and had the same problem. I contacted Garmin to see if they offer a hard wire cable and they do not. So now I have $35 invested in two cables that will not power the GPS. Others stated that this cable would work on this GPS, so Garmin must have made some changes so that after market cables do not work properly.

HARD WIRE YOUR GPS TO YOUR SNOWMOBILE
After searching forum after forum about the best method of use for my Nuvi 500 GPS, it seems to be hard wiring it your snowmobile's electrical system so the backlight, hopefully, maintains just a tad of heat to keep it operating properly and not relying on a cold soaked battery/display. This power cable seems to be well made with a heavy outer casing that will help against abrasions to the inner wires. I found the outer casing easy to strip from the wires. I crimped two Ideal male connectors to plug right into my Skidoo REV's accessory plug. I have tried this on my Nuvi with the engine running in all rpm ranges. So far so good, GPS works perfectly.

Pros: allows a super clean gps install on a motorcycle. Cons: none
After seeing many GPS units mounted on motorcycles using bulky cigarette lighter cord, I wanted a cleaner looking solution. I found it with this product.
I routed the wire neatly into my headlight and tapped auxilliary power from there. No bulky mess of cable, no cigarette lighter plug, just one neatly routed wire to my Garmin Nuvi 260.
