GARMIN 7200 -- SOMEBODY'S A PROUD NEW OWNER!

Before it was stolen last week, I used my Garmin 7200 for over 5000 miles from NJ to Florida and to Michigan, etc. It performed flawlessly, even recalculating my route when I purposely deviated from the chosen path. With each wrong turn, a female voice would announce that she was recalculating and give me new directions. After about ten wrong turns (done on purpose), my wife swore the GPS woman was getting angry with me and had a "hey, stupid" tone to her voice. Anyway, bottom line, I paid over $1000 for the first unit now that some thief is its proud new owner, I won't hesitate to buy a second. I've looked at and considered others over the last few months, but none can compare. (By the way, the serial number on my stolen unit is 43619692. If you run across her, give her my regards and send her on home to me at k2jxw@comcast.net THANKS!

Flew from Maryland to Palms Spring,Ca.with my 7200 in my carryon just to test it on the west coast. Surprising to me the rental car people were renting smaller gps for about 15 bucks a day, anyway it was like my own personal tour guide,we drove from Palms Spr. to L.A at least 4 of the 8 days we were there and never did we go 2 or come back the same way twice, while in L.A.we used the where to /landmark feature and saw all the sights you see and hear about on T.V. It does what it says it would do and more.Good thing its portable, because at 15 bucks or more a day it will travel with me where ever I go.PS MONEY WELL SPENT AND ---WHATS A MAP?

I have used this product several times since I purchased it, and it works great! You cannot get lost! Hitting construction areas and taking detours is not a problem, because the product re-calcs the route and still gets you there.

If you have a laptop, and you don't want to spend alot of money on a real good GPS, this is the answer. Having the computing power and color screen in the laptop, keeps the cost down without sacrificing the remarkably accurate capabilities of the product. The software tells you where to go with human-like dialog, and gets you there each and every time! I use it a lot, and have barely scratched the surface on what it can do!

In June this year I got the 7200 street pilot, due to the cost I was more than a little concerned as to getting my money's worth. Well If you are thinking think no more! On June 24 we left from Phoenix AZ. on a month drive to Flordia for my first grandsons birth and then to who knows, after leaving Tampa we headed East on two lane highways through 15 states, without getting on an interstate freeway or highway, through the deep south, up to Tennessee, and Arkansas spending 1955 miles on dirt roads with the 4X4 and country roads. During this we spent 4 or 5 days in the hills in TN. and another 5 in the Ozarks in Ar much of this time in 4 wheel drive. This machine was awesome, at no time did we not know where we were (well the gps knew) hotels, motels, the next gas station it was by far the greatest drive of our lives. After 34 years of marriage and telling my wife "of course I know where we are" she agreed at long last. Time permitting we will never fly again, and at last get to know our country and places again from long past memories. Thanks Garmin

DISAPPOINTED. ZUMO 550 FOR POSERS

Garmin's "biker advisors" failed Garmin miserably. MP3, Satellite Radio, photo features??? What the heck is that all about? I've used the Quest for several years and only considered another unit because I thought a larger screen would be useful when my faithful old Quest began losing satellite coverage for no reason. I thought staying with the Garmin family, as I have since the old GPS 3-Plus, I'd be getting similar GPS logic -- WRONG!! The Quest features much more closely met the needs of real bikers. Why would Garmin include the capability to add photos???!! to the GPS and not have the ability to see "distance to destination"? As Road Captain, I've led countless rides for our HOG chapter. I have yet to have anyone ask, "How many more miles to the next turn?" The question is always (appropriately so), "How many miles to the destination?". The map is difficult to maneuver with its touch screen compared to the Quest's infinately more useful and practical scrolling feature. The 550 has a satellite radio feature (why???) but doesn't give altitude - which besides being interesting to the rider, can actually be helpful to those riding normally aspirated fuel systems. As far as operating the unit even with gloves on, the 550's touch screen is far less "glove friendly" than the older "button technology" of the Quest.

I'll be returning the Zumo 550 and wait until Garmin gets some genuine bikers for advisors. Hopefully they'll bring the Quest back with a larger screen.

Having been a Garmin user for years, I expected only the best results with the ZUMO 550.

A software glitch prevented the downloading of routes and waypoints to the unit from the PC. Eventually I was able to talk to a tech at Garmin and after downloading the latest version 6.11.6 of Mapsource, the problem was corrected. As it now functions as advertised, I am very pleased with the diversity of the unit.

I feel that the POI's that are installed by Mapsource are about 2 years out of date based on it's inability to find large box store developments, interchanges and subdivisions that have been in existence for over the past 2 years. Garmin explained that Mapsource updates their data from input from all sources about every 12-18 months. So don't expect that it will find your latest Wal-Mart or even the US Post Office, as was my case.

However, the concept is excellent. The mounting on the clutch cluster was slick and easily read and menu selection is easy and accurate with gloves on as advertised. The wiring harness length is generous. The screen does wash out a bit in direct sunlight, but as the mounting device is easily accessed, the angle of the screen can sometimes be tilted away from the glare. eg. afternoon sun on an easterly trip.

The PDF file Mapsource manual on CD isn't as specific as a technical operating manual could be as there is no mention of downloading routes and waypoints, only maps. The ZUMO 550 comes with the maps installed, so the procedure for highlighting maps with routes and waypoints on them for downloading, is flawed. Do not highlight the maps on your route, but have your route saved and open on your PC with the taskbar tab on "routes" and then download. I would have liked to see Garmin provided a compact desk stand for the ZUMO 550 to facilitate off mount tasks while either the AC power or the USB data transfer cables are inserted to the unit... All in All, a great unit and with 20K miles planned on the Harley for the summer, I'll be using it to it's maximum potential. I miss the crumb trails as well as the ability to "mark" with a touch of a button that I am accustomed to with other units. The truck mount works just fine and I am pleased that the external antenna that I have in place plugs in to this unit with the standard adapter used for other units.

I don't have sound wired, however, the graphics and text prompts are timely and legible. The fuel gauge is slick and the maximum speed function could be incriminating under some circumstances, so don't forget to reset at the end of the day.

I would say, an excellent product that addresses the motorcyclist's requirements... pricey though.

TOM TOM RIDER 2 SECOND EDITON REVIEW

Purchased about 2 weeks ago. Screen and maps are very clear and easy to read and navigate with colours. Voice directions is clear. Bluetooth headset is not made by tom tom, but it is top of line. PC software is not working and waiting for their downloads on tom tom website as product is so new on the market. This price shown is way below the suggested listing prices and has better extended warrenty here. Suggested list price shown is accurate as I have seen other sites listing for $760 Cdn. range.

NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME

Why is my review summarised the way it is??

Because this navigator should have been held back by Garmin until they got it right.  Anyone that disagrees with my assesment likely is not a long distance rider and/or has limited experience with navigators in general.  This is not to say that it doesn't work at all, but rather that it doesn't do what I, for one paid a huge premium to have it do beyond that of it's basic navigation, communications and entertainment functions.

Garmin started with a reasonable premise;  The Zumo 550, a waterproof, motorcycle friendly navigator needed a widescreen cousin to capitalise on the present market trend to widescreen, and advanced (such as that term means) features like those in navigators such as the newer Nuvi series devices ending in '5', such as the 265WT, 765, 885 and so on.

And I agree,

However Garmin has done no one a favor by dumbing down and decontenting the Zumo 660 to the point of being almost useless for the rural motorcyclist and then, to add insult to injury, released it as a heavily buggy, fitful device in which certain features are missing that THIS author would prefer to see incorporated (if for no other reason than that they are part of the predecessor device, the Zumo 550).

OK, let's start with the basics;

It is a navigator.  Do I have to explain what they do?  Yes?  Then have a look at my original 'what a navigator is' type review here on epinions at http://tinyurl.com/276-review and my original Zumo 550 review, accessible here: http://tinyurl.com/Zumo-550-Review

Now for the 660:

It has been about 2 years since Garmin released the 550.  For the most part the 550 was a competent navigator, but it exemplified Garmin's ongoing propensity to strictly define the navigation experience by reducing the configuration and display choices available to the consumer.

Garmin has provided more features such as 'lane assist'.  Unfortunately we still can't use MSN Direct on our motorcycles.  This is unchanged from the Zumo 550

Like it's cousin the Zumo 550, the 660 comes with both car and motorcycle mounts that are complete with all brackets and cables necessary to mount the device to the bike's handlebars.

Garmin's biggest change here is that rather than providing a detachable power cord and jacks on th bike mount they have integrated the cabling and put the audio and power connections at the end of a 3 foot umbilical.

On my bike (a Yamaha FJR1300) I opted to mount the unit on the center bolt using a drilled and tapped stem nut with a RAM ball affixed.  Cost for the RAM Ball and 'stem nut' were less than $30.  Garmin's included gear has the unit mounted near the left or right grips and I really prefer the centered mount - the screen is available at a glance.

Mounted in my location the cabling is just long enough to reach under the tank to the tool tray under my seat.  Had I installed the unit on the standard clutch bracket it would not have been long enough.

However included in the cabling is a faux USB connection that one can presently use with Garmin's newer traffic receiver (but NOT for MSN Direct nor for the XM radio feature Garmin offered with the Zumo 500).  Doesn't much matter, because THAT connection is for some reason shorter than the ones for the stereo output, microphone input and fused power connection.  Being shorter means that it is difficult to access the connection if you run your cabling under the fuel tank like I did.

Further, the faux USB connection (Faux, because it LOOKS like a USB connector, but supports nothing but the traffic receiver) is sensitive to moisture - the navigator reports that there are unsupported devices plugged into the connection if the connector gets wet.  My USB connection is now wrapped in a plastic bag.

More insidious is that Garmin has done away with the security screw that fastened the Zumo 450 & 550 to the mount.  The rider now must remove his navigator when he parks his bike.  It wouldn't have been hard to supply a security screw that blocked operation of the somewhat awkward rlease lever, but they did not.

And I for one would have expected that since they are forcing me to remove the unit from my bike, that they would have included the 'Garmin Locate' feature that temporarily marks the location of the vehicle when the unit is pulled from its mount.  The temporary waypoint can then be used to navigate through a parking lot to get back to the machine - what would that have cost Garmin?  Probably nothing except for the brownie points for having left it off.

As a car unit, Zumo 660 is delivered with Garmin's traditional suction mount and a basic power cord.  One can purchase and plug in Garmin's standard traffic receiver or MSN Direct receiver to the base. Be advised that this navigator does not support MSN Direct's enhanced feature set.  You get the same things that you got with the Nuvi 680, but not the flight arrival or other extended information that the second generation receivers appear to deliver.

For entertainment Zumo 660 supports MP3 music and will play Audible formatted material.  The latter is perfect for improving one's social skills while riding the twisties.  The player will stop for navigation announcements and the music (or book) will restart when the announcement concludes.  It all works well enough except for the fact that the onscreen access button is covered when the navigator's fuel warning system decides you need to fill up, in which case the icon is hidden under that of the fuel gauge.

To store music in any significant quantity requires that the user purchase and install a separate microSD card - be warned that not all of these cards are the same.

With a stated maximum capacity of 8 gigs, there are repordly users with 16 gig cards installed that work well.  At this time of this writing, an Adata 8 Gig card with regular SD adapter costs about $22 - not a serious hardship, but to be fair, Garmin could have included one with the unit and increased the MSRP slightly - at these premium prices we expect premium product.

On the car version of the quick release bracket there is an external microphone input - I have an external mic in my car.  There is, however no external stereo output.  There IS one on the navigator itself, but if you want to use the MP3 player and if your car is not equipped with Stereo Bluetooth (and none that I know of are) then you will need to plug a 3.5 mm cable into the side of the Zumo itself, which obviates the entire quick release mount.  I suppose Garmin might have included an FM transmitter like they did on the Nuvi 7XX series, but alas, they have not.

Zumo 660 now supports A2DP Bluetooth for wireless stereo connections to the vehicle.  Unfortunately there aren't any vehicles that I know of that presently support stereo Bluetooth, though there are several motorcycle helmets and hardware adapaters that do - however those helmets have insufficient battery life to run for a whole day of operation.

All this Bluetooth hype is pretty much a waste considering that Garmin recently changed chipset providers, moving from Parrot to Motorola.

Unfortunately in doing so they've pretty much broken the Bluetooth very badly.

I own three Bluetooth phones.  All of them worked flawlessly on the Zumo 550 (and the various Bluetooth Nuvis I own and owned).  But NONE of them works worth a darn with the Zumo 660.

I can't get them to pair reliably.  The Zumo 660 crashes (by shutting off) when my Nokia N95-4 sends more than about 200 contacts to the navigator.  Connections to my Palm phone are simply impossible and so on - but all of this worked (and continues to work) with the Parrot equipped navigators.

When I called Garmin I was told that the problem is my phone.

Really?

I am also told that Garmin does not support delivery of SMS messages to the screen.

Why not?  TomTom does.

There are issues with the display software;

Zumo 660 will often go into a delay mode while drawing a screen.  It will paint about a quarter of the screen, then pause, sometimes for up to 30 seconds and then continue drawing; However Zumo 660 is also equipped with the extremely annoying 'Autozoom'.  When it goes into the 'delay painting mode' while attempting to guide you through a complex intersection it never does fully draw the exit and this can be VERY dangerous.

I've had it happen to me and it is very disconcerting to depend on the navigator for specific directions on where to go and have it painting gibberish and incomplete depictions.

Having said that, Garmin has included the very sexy 'lane assist' into this navigator that puts up an almost photographic depiction of an upcoming exit to help the driver/rider prepare for ther manoeuver - it works well, displaying a pretty representative image of an exit or turn-off to help you get organised to take that exiit - Lane assist only functions on limited access highways and only for complex intersections, so it's presence appears to be somewhat random to the rider.

More important is that ALL of my older navigators (starting with the old SP3 and all the way to my Nuvi 780) would display the name of each upcoming cross street on the information bar at the top of the screen.  This is more than extremely useful to help the rider plan his drive when just 'using' the navigator to get somewhere, because one often wants to know where to turn without going to the hassle of entering an address and following the directions - you KNOW you have to turn left on Elm, and it is nice to kno when you get to that street to make the turn.

For some reason they no longer do this except of limited access highways.  They continually display the name of the road on whch I am driving;  But NOT the names of the cross streeets - since I supposedly know what street I'm driving on, why bother?  I DO need to know the name of the upcoming streets so I can prepare to turn.

The absence of the information is of no significant concern while actively navigating to a destination because the navigator will tell me when to turn and where to go, but at all other times it is absolutely necessary.

A navigator is ssupposed to replace paper maps.  And on a moorcycle, to refer to one's map one used to have to stop the bike and check things out.  However up to now electronic navigators have provided the ability to 'see' the upcoming road details (how they twist and turn) on the fly.  Not so with the Zumo 660.

Garmin has seen fit to reduce the map detail to below the level of useless.  You cannot see secondary roads any father away than about 3 miles.  As a rider, I want to be able to explore.  To do that I want to be able to see just 'how squiggly' an upcoming road might be - so I know if it is filled with twists and turns and is worthwhile exploring.

Of interest is that when I'm on a secondary road and the zoom is set to greater than 500 meters, it display NO secondary roads, not even the one I am are riding on!!! My Nuvi 760, which has a scfreen with the same resolution and a less capable processor provides details at 4 times the zoom level when the display detail is set to 'most', why not Zumo 660?

There is a feature called the 'browse map' that allows the user to pan around the high zoom maps and look around.  It is essentially Garmin's intended solution for the missing map detail.  You can use the browse map when the bike is stopped or when the car is rolling;  But you cannot when the bike is moving. And that's when you need that map because you can't see the upcoming roads.

At the present time there is a very large list of bugs and missing features that is being compiled maintained by the Zumo community and those of us early adopters have been keeping Garmin informed with our observations by contacting the copany in writing and by phone - but the reactions we've been receiving so far have, as mentioned not been encouraging.

Issues relate to such things as a limited number of routes;  Bugs in the proximity POI functionality; The inability to do off-device routing; Strange routing and lots more - all of this will be expanded on in a future edit.

Come on Garmin, get your act together.

As with all complex  devices, I didn't expect perfection on day one - however Garmin seems to have almost gone out of it's way to deliver a decontented and buggy device.  Calls to Garmin support are met with wrong information, unsympathetic acknowledgements and such.

The reality is simply that the Zumo 660 is NOT the right navigator for me in it's present form.  I am seriously considering returning mine and buying another Zumo 550, though the 276c and it's sister units remain attractive and viable alternatives and have that absolutely amazing graphic display.

However the biggest issues relate to the half-baked firmware and what appears to be arbitrary function definitions which absolutely detract from the experience.

At $800 this is a premium navigator.  As a user and for my money I expect a premium feature set that fulfills the s[pecific needs of this specialised market and Garmin has NOT delivered.

Pros: waterproof, wide screen, lane assist, user replace
Cons: missing much critical functionality. loaded with

Purchased last night and looking forward to first ride. Bluetooth synch with IPhone took several attempts, but finally got it to work. Installed the bluetooth headset on half helmet with no problems. Drove with it on summer vacation when received and got put on roads unsuitable for my motorhome when put on shortest routes, and found myself being told to go the wrong way on one way streets in some cities. Need to find a reasonably priced map update as it seems outdated. Otherwise it is a great piece of equipment that exceeds my wildest dreams compared to Street Atlas which has better updates.

GOOD ALL-PURPOSE NAVIGATOR

I have had the pleasure of testing the Nuvi 550. It's an excellent unit that can be used on your boat, in the car, or on a short walk through the bush. However it does not have all the common functions of a marine or hiking GPS so if you plan to use the unit often in these circumstances you may want to get a regular handheld (60csx) and a separate car navigator(nuvi). You should end up at the same price point. Don't get me wrong, having everything rolled into one is great for the casual outdoors man. Viva la GPS

THANK YOU FOR SAVING ME!

I had ordered this from another site (The Camera Professionals) for what I thought was a STEAL, turned out it was a scam. They told me I had to buy the maps for another $150, then buy the charger and a battery for even more. I called your number for a price match, and the guy who answered the phone was very knowledgeable and told me it comes with everything I need to get started- preloaded with the maps and includes the lighter adapter, power cable, and battery, etc. Turns out you guys are cheaper already by over $100 and everything is included! A big THANK YOU for saving me a lot of headache and a lot of money. A+

A GREAT BUY!

I purchased the Zumo 550 after owning the TomTom Rider for two weeks and being disappointed by the problems I had. The Garmin unit is a far superior unit for North America, and the latest updates fixed most of the bugs I had found previously. I've logged 8000km so far on it with my bike and am very happy to report its a lifesaver at times when I'm visiting unfamiliar cities. Also saves paper in that I've eliminated paper maps :-)

BEST GPS ON THE MARKET FOR A BIKE

I use Zumo 550 on a 07 Goldwing. I mounted it on the left handlebar with the bracket that was included. I can easily switch it from the bike to my car. It is far superior to the Nav system on the Goldwing. I love the unit and have used it all over the US. You can't go wrong with this unit.

GREAT UNIT BUT UN FLEXIBLE AUDIO

I used the unit on my Motorcycle for a 4 day 3100 mile trip and it performed excellent.

2 improvements can be made.

1.Flexible audio gain settings for the in and out via blue tooth to adapt for different conditions and card vers Motorcycle.

2. The "DONE" key should be half sized and fixed to the rt. side of the screen when entering the lock code. It is too easy to hit it when entering a zero digit in a code.

I wasn't sure if the Zumo 550 was the right GPS for the type of Adventure riding I do. I was pleasantly surprised to find it has very detail maps of the off road areas. The simple interface and the fact you can be wearing your heavy gloves when using is one of the best features. I've had other GPS's over the years and most have been hard to use, therefore I never use all the functions. The Zumo is probably one of the easiest right out of the box GPS's I've seen. One huge feature is the size of the screen... this makes it really safe to quickly look down and see where you are, which is a safety feature I love. I strongly recommend the Zumo 550.

Got the Zumo 550 for xmas! It works great, better than my built in one on my VW. I am able to put it on my bikes small fairing,,just above the radio. They give u small disk that affixs on a flat surface. I also have it hooked thru my phone and a blutooth earpiece, the gps picks up all your phoneinfo,,like contacts and voice prompts.I was even easy to do this as I am not very techinical.. I also use this in my truck and it hooks ont the windshield easy..

all in all I love it so far,, I wont be hooking up the handlebar unit as I have room in the centre of my fairing with the cigarette lighter to power it!! 10/10...

I just purchased and received my Garmin Street Pilot 7500 (same as the 7200) this week and took it out for a test drive. I looked long and hard for my next GPS purchase. I’ve had the eTrex legend for over 5 years. Linked to my laptop it worked OK but was awkward to say the least.

Using it as a hand held is also very awkward. Screen too small and it is really hard to read. We just purchased an RV and I wanted to get something that would be easier to use than the laptop. I new I had to have a large screen and I also had to have a Garmin product, so that pretty much narrowed down the search.

I didn’t want to spend that kind of money but wanted to be completely happy with what ever I got. So, I sucked it up and dug deep into my pocket. I’m really glad I did. I set up some routs and intentionally went off course. The 7500 was very quick to recalculate the route. I really like the fact that the directions use the streets names. That really makes a big difference. It’s easy to set up your favorites and route to them. Finding services is also a snap. The sun doesn’t bother the screen at all.

However, there are a couple of things I would like to change. And one (I can’t believe I did this) I took care of. The unit comes with a cigarette adapter hard wired into it. It was (keyword was) in the way. I took my wire cutter and cut it off. That’s right, cut it right off. My wife couldn’t believe it either. But I knew I wasn’t going to send it back. Much, much better without it. I’m surprised Garmin even engineered it without being able to disconnect the cable because of the inverters that are on the market. It comes with the 110 volt adapter.

I am also disappointed in the dash mount that it comes with. The mounting plate has double-sided-tape to attach it to the dash. No way am I going to put that on my new dashboard. I’ll figure something out. Other than that I would highly recommend this if you do a lot of traveling. It’s a little pricy but well worth it. I have it sitting next to me, in the house, and it just announced that it lost satellite reception. Anyway, happy trails,

Amazing, small, easy to use. Set on dash of vehicle or boat & receives great. Talks to you, giving notice of upcoming turns. Will re-direct you if you get off route or will automatically set new route from where you are to your destination. Can't say enough good about this great little GPS. Another outstanding GARMIN product!

THE CURRENT BEST

I bought my first GPS in 1994. Have had lots since. The 7200 is the state of the ART for 2007! Does everything it says it does, and well. The flat mount that came with it is worthless, unless you want to SCREW it to the top of your dash. Bought the 2720 beanbag mount that worked ok. Then bought the RAM big sucion cup and that works great.

GREAT VALUE

I've had my GPS72 for a few years now and use it primarily for hiking. For those new to GPS, this little gizmo will tell you your position usually to within about six meters. That's plenty accurate for those simply not wanting to get lost in the bush. On a good day with a clear view of the southern horizon, the circle of accuracy gets to within 2.1 meters, which is excellent. Reception: You need a view of the sky, preferably the south, as GPS satellites are near the equator. That said, it still works fine on cloudy or rainy days, or with light forest cover. If the signal does cut out, you simply continue to the next clearing or hilltop to get your position again. Navigation: There's simply nothing like the peace of mind in knowing that no matter where you go, this thing will bring you back. You save waypoints by going to your destination and pressing Enter, or you can enter them beforehand from a map. Then, wherever you are, simply point the map page cursor at any given waypoint and you're given the compass heading and distance. No guesswork. Compass: You must keep moving for the internal compass to work properly, which could be a problem if the signal starts cutting out because of tree cover. In any case, you should not rely exclusively on the internal compass because it uses up the batteries (the 16 hour rating is optimistic). Here's a tip: Use a magnetic compass most of the time and turn off the GPS. Only switch on the GPS to confirm the current position and get a new compass heading. This way, the batteries last up to a couple weeks. You don't want to walk around staring at your GPS anyway as you have to watch your footing and you want to be able to see and hear what's happening around you. Durability: Yes, it will float. I dropped mine in a beaver pond once and it kept working fine. I notice the Etrex and Legend models are waterproof but don't float. It wouldn't have been any fun swimming in that murky pond trying to retrieve my GPS. I wish the screen weren't so easily scratched, but I managed to buff out some light scratches. Mapping: Some people may be bothered by the fact that this model does not have an internal map but all you need are the waypoints to find your way. You should carry a paper map in your pocket as a backup anyway, and the models with internal maps (including software) cost hundreds of dollars more. A color display would be nice but is not essential. All in all, I'm very pleased with this item, and would never go into the wilderness without it.

GARMIN 276C

I've owned a couple of other units by Garmin Units that do more than one thing like depth sounder and chart plotter. This unit is simple to use and understand. The dangerous depths are clearly marked in pink, it's so easy to stay out of trouble on the water.

GPS CITY gave me great service too. When I realized I'd made a mistake buying the other unit, they helped me to replace with the 276C.

The screen's a bit small but aside from that, this unit rocks!

This GPS unit is awesome. I have a Garmin GPS60C and wanted something for my PocketPC. Being a fool, I bought the CoPilot Live 6 product and was sorely disappointed. I then purchased the G10 and my faith in GPS was restored. The unit is small and has good signal. But the software package is really the star. Garmin has the best maps and software in the industry.

This GPS was our first purchased. We had no prior experience with a GPS. We have found it simple to use. The directions in the manual were straight forward. Pros: easy to use, lightweight, color, easy to use with our computer. Cons: the backlighting has to be readjusted everytime it gets turned on, the backlighting goes out after a predetermined amount of time, accuracy varies sometimes greater than 3 meters even in open spaces.

THE BEST YET !

I have had this unit on my Road King for over 10,000 miles without a glitch. It was easy to install, setup, and use. Been in the rain, sun, heat, and cold temps, never had a problem. Yes, it may be a little bit more than some of the other units out there, but worth every dime.

This is a great unit. I've had it about two weeks, and I've only tested it locally. There were a few POI problems, but I'm still learning how to input my custom POIs. We are going to fly to Portland on the west coast in early May and we'll go into Canada too. I want to get the XM radio unit too, but it costs too much.

SO FAR EXCELLENT

It is snow season here so I have only played with it in a car.I also purchased some MAD MAPS for New England and Myrtle Beach. The maps look OK but you have to get to a point on the route first and then you can start navigating the route.I have not tryed them yet either. The main reason I purchased this one was for the Bluetooth function that allowed navigation directions to heard threw head set.The parring was not bad because I have had experience in the past with parring other devices.I can't wait to try it on the bike!

FANTASTIC GPS FOR BIKE AND CAR

Excellent workmanship, easy set-up for a techno averse person like me. Easy to use and a nice set up to allow easy switch to the car. I'm going to get a second bike mount for my other bike and maybe a mount and the charts for the boat. Well thought out product. I'm delighted. And service from GPS City is fast and friendly.

Pros: can move to car, easy to use, gloves on operation
Cons: none so far

APPROPRIATE ALLROUND GPS

This is an amazingly accurate little device. It seems a little over priced when you consider that there are only base maps included. To have all the maps you need, if you are a traveler becomes a pricey. However it Works perfect and 2 AA batteries last forever. 20 hours realistic. Amazing Feature is that waas is able to be either on or off so you do not eat up all the power and you really do not need incredible accuracy all the time!

Pros: functionality, options and potential
Cons: price

The 276C has an awesome screen refresh rate. Nearly instantaneous when panning or zooming. The 2 serial ports has made this ideal for APRS operation. This allows me to configure this for standalone operation with the Kenwood D700 (port 1) and create a second connection for UIview and any other TNC/radio combination I desire. This is a great unit.

- Versatile screen configurations

- Fast update rates.

- Flexible Serial configurations (2 comm ports)

- Boat and or Auto operation.

THE MERCEDES OF GPS RECEIVERS

This GPS really looks cool. With it's thin, sleek, black finish with silver trim. Nice ! The 400 MHz processor is very fast at route calculation. The unit is VERY easy to use and you have all the features you want and need readily at hand. They gave me the latest map version for free. I just downloaded it using the nice TomTom Home Software and now I am at 710. It is a large download at 1.7GB, but adds quite a bit of detail to your maps. The SD card slot is handy and you can add any SD card as long as it is not high capacity ( HD ) type. I put in a 4GB 150X Transcend card that is not HC and it works great giving me plenty of room for music and photos along with my maps. The MapShare feature of the TomTom unis is a really nice feature that competitors don't have and it a really cool community that let's you receive and send map updates from your unit through the TomTom Home Software. Very nice feature. If you want to own a really nice GPS with excellent looks, good maps, rich feature set, and great PC software to keep your unit up to date, then this is the one. I highly recommend it.

Excellent little package. I use it with my IPAQ 4705 and it works very well. Not having a cable combined with a really long battery life really makes using it easy on all trips. One suggestion is to tether the charger plug cover... its really small and easy to lose when removed.

Overall, I'd rate this unit 8/10. I would recommend a high horsepower PDA because the software is hungry on processing, graphics and memory. Unfortunately, the core program (running on my Dell X50v pda) became corrupt 2 days into my 16 day vacation and the unit became utterly useless. This was unusual seeing as the program ran stable for 6 months prior. I'm still working out the problem with Garmin.

FINDS SAT SIGNALS LIKE A BLOOD HOUND CAN FIND SENT

Ok, so this is my 4th hand held GPS that I've personally owned, a 60CS was the last before this one. I can't believe this things ability to lock onto satellites and report accurate locations. As an example, after just being turned on, it found signals through an open door while being used in a room WITHOUT windows. The nearest window (with closed drapes) was through two open doorways (on either side of a hallway) and through living-room... at least 18ft away... just incredible. This GPS also uses external power with a common USB cable that is provided in the box so you can use just about any USB style charging adapter and you do not have to worry about the batteries when connected to a computer. I am very happy with my new Garmin Vista HCx GPS.

On a recent canoe trip I took my Venture Cx but my canoe partner has the Vista HCx. I kept getting weak signal and losing my position while he had no problem monitoring his position while both on a portage and bushwhacking to a lake. I really like my Venture, but having seen the increased sensitivity I am thinking of upgrading.

JUST RIDE

My husband bought me the Zumo 550 for Valentine's Day '08! I have it mounted on the center of my '07 FatBoy handlebars! I do a lot of riding while my husband is overseas most of the year and I love that I don't need to know where I am going when I saddle up to ride! I just ride, and when I get hungry or thirsty, I just search by local POI's! I've never been lost with it but I sure have been lost without it! I personally think the only downfall is that when I use this unit in an area I am familiar with, I notice it sends me some of the silliest directions, when other ways would have been less complicated and even shorter. But it still gets me to the final destination and re-routes me when I am lost! Yes, it's expensive, but worth every penny! I've dropped it twice off my bike already and it took the beating so far!

I received the Garmin 550 as a gift. I have been quite happy with it. I took it to Italy last month and would have been hopelessly lost on the small mountain backroads in Tuscany. Motorcycle functions work great. One problem I'm wondering if anyone else has with this unit. Every once in a while it will not turn on. After working just fine, it will be completely dead after the next time use. I found that if I removed the battery and reinstalled it, the unit would work fine for quite a while until it happened again. Same drill would get it going again. Yesterday in the car, hooked up to external power it went dead again. Tried the same remove the battery trick, but it didn't work this time. It would only flash up the first startup screen, then shutdown. I then hooked up the charger to it for several hours, then everything works. Any one else have a problem like this? I am going to get in touch with Garmin as I think the unit is faulty.
