The Garmin eTrex Vista combines a basemap of North and South America, with a barometric altimeter and electronic compass. The electronic compass provides bearing information while you're standing still and the altimeter determines your precise altitude. The Garmin eTrex Vista also boasts an internal memory capacity of 24 megabytes, which allows it to accept downloaded mapping data from GARMIN's MapSource CD-ROMs. A silver case gives this unit a high-tech look. Marine navigation aids are included in addition to the basemap. These navigational aids are pre-loaded into each unit from the factory.

Marilyn Nova Scotia March 11, 2009	GARMIN ETREX VISTA Pros: good performing gps for the trail Cons: poor discription of what you are getting While the GPS works very well and takes the beat of beening on a ATV running thru wood's trails and once I figured out how the user interface worked, the manual is not very clear to a novice user, I was impressed with it. The thing I found bad about was the description of what input it had. It says that it had a computer data input but failed to mention it was a 9 pin serial data input. I was expecting a USB input thus when I received the unit because my computer has no 9 pin serial input I had to find and purchase a converter cable. There is a Vista unit available with a USB input so maybe a note could be prominently placed somewhere explaining this. 16 out of 28 viewers found this review helpful. Was this review helpful to you? Dale Ireland March 29, 2008	TIME PROVEN UNIT I bought this Vista not long after they were introduced. I think it was about mid-2000. It has worked perfectly. I still use it often and it is still being updated and supported. I think the long production life speaks for itself. mARK September 5, 2007	A BIG IMPROVEMENT this one actually works in the woods! i had a garmin emap, but it lost the satellites all the time under forest canopy. the HCx had at least 8 all the hours i was out walking. that's in central ontario (ie, temperate zone) forest. 43 out of 80 viewers found this review helpful. LYNDON LUDDITE NM December 31, 1969	The Vista is top flight instrument and I give it a 5 but I cannot understand why the display is amber background with amber characters which makes it difficult to read. The speedometer in my car broke and they wanted over 200.00 to fix it so I just put my Vista on the dashboard and with the big size trip computer page display it is easy to read. I might say that the easiest way to learn its use is to keep it in your car and go thru the meriad of drop down menues and pretty soon you can call yourself an expert. Christian Luebbert ON December 31, 1969	Hello all, let me start off by saying that this is a verry good GPS unit. I had to rely on it solely once for route finding when out on a five day trail less hike when thick fog rolled in. Without it, Parks Canada would have had to mount a search and rescue for we were already off course (we knew this because we knew how to use the GPS properly). Overall, great unit. The downside is that you get poor reception under thick canopy and I nearly never get the 3 meter accuracy. More like 6-9 meter. Personally, that's good enough for I can visually see the waypoint within this range (not in the jugle or anything like that). If you purchase the unit, you will not be dissapointed. PRE-LOADED GARMIN MARINE NAVIGATIONAL AIDS: Included with the Garmin eTrex Vista is a the pre-loaded Marine navigational aids (Americas Marine Points of Interest). The data is loaded into the units 24MB of internal memory, and is not part of the basemap. If Garmin MapSource Mapping Software is loaded into the Garmin eTrex Vista, the preloaded Marine POI database will be erased. To recover this pre-loaded Marine POI data, the Map Database file can be downloaded from GARMIN's web site at www.garmin.com. Note: Garmin MapSource Mapping Software and the Marine POI database cannot be loaded at the same time. SOFTWARE UPGRADES FROM GARMIN: • Increase Waypoint/Tracklog Storage: Upgrade 3.10, and above, for the eTrex Vista now includes an increased active track log to 10,000 points, an increased saved track log to 750 points, an increased user waypoints to 1,000 waypoints and an increased waypoints per route to 125 waypoints. Click here for unit software upgrade. • Jump Master Program: Upgrade 2.41, and above, for the eTrex Vista now includes JumpMaster. This accessory follows military guidelines for calculating a jumpmaster's high altitude release point (HARP). The accessory can auto-detect when a user has jumped to begin navigating him toward the desired impact point (DIP) using the barometer and electronic compass.
