Introducing the Garmin GPS V. The next leap forward in the GPS II and III Plus range of GPS units. With the GPS V, you can now have autorouting, which provides access to the shortest and fastest routes, turn-by-turn directions (throughout North America, including major cities), and estimated time of arrival at your intended destination-all packaged in a small handheld GPS and 19MB OF INTERNAL MEMORY. Along the way, the GPS V provides display prompts with audible beeps that alert the driver to necessary turns, distance to upcoming turns, course deviation, and distance to final destination. The GPS V's built-in, routable basemap provides detail for interstates, interstate exit data (USA only), highways, rivers, and lakes in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, plus commonly used streets in metropolitan areas. With the press of a button, the built-in basemap will provide turn-by-turn guidance to a destination via interstates and highways. With downloaded maps from the City Select CD-ROM (included), the GPS V provides turn-by-turn guidance down to residential street-level detail. Users can also look up services and points of interest and view the address, phone number, and map location. The MapSource City Select CD-ROM is included with the purchase of the GPS V, along with the unlock code for the entire CD-ROM, and provides you with autorouting capability.

Without the unlock code, the CD-ROM data cannot be viewed on a PC or downloaded to a GPS unit. HOW DO I UNLOCK THE CD-ROM? The GPS V Deluxe package does not require the internet to unlock the CD-ROM. In the past, you were required to go online to Garmin's web site to unlock your CD-ROM. To unlock the CD-ROM now, simply install the MapSource program on your Windows computer, open the 'unlock codes' window by pressing Ctrl + U and then enter the unlock code included. You are now ready to download mapping data to your unit. Software Minimum System Requirements IBM compatible PC with Pentium processor, 32MB RAM, CD-ROM drive, available serial port (or USB port with the USB Adapter), mouse or other pointing device, 256 color display adapter (24-bit color recommended) and monitor with 640-480 resolution or higher, and up to 300 megabytes free hard drive space. Mapsource requires a 32 bit operating system such as Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, Windows ME, Windows 2000 or XP.

Scott P. TN December 31, 1969	All in all a great unit for the price! City Select with all region unlock code is included which makes the price even sweeter. I have found the unit to be a stellar performer, rugged and dependable. I also purchased the deluxe beanbag mount used for the Street Pilot series GPS which also works with the V. My only gripe(s) would be the screen can be hard to read in bright light, but that is easily remedied with a homemade "hood" made from card stock. Also downloading maps via a serial port can be time consuming; have another activity planned while waiting for the downloads to complete. I do enjoy the fact that it is equally at home on the dash or in my hand geocaching. Ed PA December 31, 1969	Had this unit for several years, use it in the car, boat, bicycle, & motorcycle. Runs a long time on batteries, important on the bicycle. It has navigated me through cities and country very well. Doesn't always know the best route, but will get you there. Jerry Claybrook WI December 31, 1969	Have had the unit for several years. Overall it is a great value for the money. Biggest complaint is too frequently the intersection information is incorrect and sometimes when you need it most it goes into the recalculation mode to correct itself and this takes several minutes, by this time you are well past the critical turn information. This may be more of a function of the mapping software than the unit itseld but I feel this is a significant issue because often when you most need it it is wrong or is recalculating and during this time you get no information. If the software was more accurate then this probably would not be an issue but the software is what it is and you don't have other choices. 21 out of 44 viewers found this review helpful. Al T AB December 31, 1969	What a great product. My wife bought mine for me for Christmas 2004. We used it to chart our route to Phoenix that Christmas. While we were in Las Vegas for New years on the way back, our dog got seriously ill (life threatening). The receptionist gave us the wrong directions to the vet's office, so we punched in the address and the GPS V actually guided us there. The vet performed emergency surgery and saved my dog's life.
