BEST MILITARY WORTHY GPS OUT THERE
Pros: tough, waterproof Cons: should also be available in a bright color Bought this puppy not long ago and I've put it to the test
and so far out in the field at CFB Shilo, MB and it has
never cease to impress me. It has so many features to keep
you busy for while (specially at night). LOL
The only thing that I would change or would like to try on
this unit is having the buttons above the screen instead
and, having the lanyard attachment point at the very bottom
of the unit (and not to the top right of the screen).
Other than that, I'd recommend this one to anyone out there
looking for the best there is and military worthy!

FIRST RATE!
Pros: weatherproof, tough, good resolution, fast Cons: small buttons, narrow view I use it in my car, sailing, and on my motorcycle. With my
biggest memory card I rode across Canada without problems.
One thing I learned early on, use a 12 volt cable as the
batteries drop voltage quickly on cold mornings. I leave
mine on "track is up" so that the narrow screen displays
the road ahead. On a 300 metre scale it shows roads and
secondary roads in plenty of time to decide to turn. Off
track navigation quickly re-calculates the route. If I had
a complaint I'd wish the buttons were bigger but I can
live with that for the excellent price and value for the
money. Bulletproof in all weather and easy to unclip from
my RAM mount and drop into a pocket. I can't find a reason
to spend another $500 to $800 for something else.

GREAT 1ST GPSR
Pros: easy to use/learn, solid feel, larger color screen Cons: basemap is outdated, usb cord connection awkward This is our first GPSr unit. We bought it mainly for
offroading in our jeep but have since started using it for
geocaching as well. Have to say that I am thrilled with its
performance and ease of use. Couple of issues that don't
effect me, but might others.
The base map is terrible and hasn't been upgraded in over 5
years. There are streets and sctions that really should be
on the unit. The USB cord that comes with it should have a
90 degree connection at the GPSr end so it can lay flatter
on the table.

I LOVE IT.
I absolutely love this GPS. Do yourself a favor though and
get the type of maps that best suit your needs. Very easy to
use, very accurate, compact and good battery life. Very well
designed. If you are looking for a portable GPS for hunting
fishing, adventure or work in the bush then this is a unit I
would recommend.

THIS THING EVEN WORKS UNDERGROUND!
Pros: loaded with features. readable in bright sun. Well at least in my basement. My office is in the corner of
the basement, and I can get 4-5 sats, although they are
weak. Stated precision is 15-20 metres. I only lose signal
when I put it on the basement floor.
Also tried it in the Central American jungle and I never
lost reception once.
I really like how readable the screen is in bright sunlight.
It's like paper. The user interface is very intuitive and
highly configurable. The metric units are also very well
presented, and there is no feel of American units in the
background. (This is often an annoyance in other types of
device/software)
I use it with the french interface, and for the most part,
the translation is very well done. There are a few places
where they missed a word, but it's not enough to be
annoying. (i.e. Ouest "on" rue Jacques-Cartier).

GPS IN CHINA
Pros: excellent reliability, accurate, dependable, Cons: china city nav maps off by a few degrees I had a GPSmap 60CSx for a number of years. I used it in
Indonesia, using a geologist's custome made map of
Sumatra. I also used in New Zealand with some maps I
downloaded from the Internet. It worked like a charm.
Though it was not reroutable. I then used it in China
using Garmin's Plug & Play City Navigator Map which is in
the form of a microSD/SD card. It works well however
there is twist. I heard that China distorts the signal so
that you are off by a few degrees. It takes some getting
use to but nonetheless it is reliable and useful in
navigating the larger cities in China. It is also
reroutable but I don't use this function much as it is
more of a nuisance then practical. With my GPS I travel
like a local with confidence. I know where I am and where
I am going. It also helps deter taxi drivers who think
they can take you for a ride. Thumbs up as world wide

A GOOD DEVICE WITH SOME DISAPPOINTMENT
The first test for my new GPSMAP 60CSx device was for my
trip to China.
The reason I chose this model was because several of my
friends werer using it in the field, and all them gave it a
high marks for geologists. But my experience in the first
few days was not that joyful --- the device does not have
the preloaded base map for China. I sent emails to GARMIN,
and the answer was that for the devices purchased in North
America, they would not have the preloaded map for China,
unless I buy one in China. What a disappointment!
Then I thought maybe I could pay a fee for an upgrade (to
have the base map for China), and the answer was a 'no',
from both GARMIN and its dealer in China.
I have no doubt that this is an excellent GPS, but it was
pity that people can't use it globally, as it is called
Global Positioning System.
I had then turned to a person who can help me in upgrading
me with a loaded map of China, and, more surprisingly, he
could add Chinese language on the language menu to my
device! The guy charged me with a reasonable fee for the
service.
I hope the manuafacturer could make their products a truly
global device.

STILL AN EXCELLENT GPS
Pros: excellent all around gps unit Cons: slow loading large map sets to memory While this design has been around for mre than a few years
(I pre-ordered my GPSMap 60Cs) it is still a great gps
unit. The receivers have obviously improved over time, as
there is a marked difference in performance between the
60Csx and the 60Cs. The software has also changed, with
some features being left out, notably the alarm clock. The
graphics are also more cartoony (mac-esque if you will) I
preferred the old style "harder" graphics. Overall this
GPS serves me well hiking, ATVing, boating, flying, and
driving. It has weaknesses in each activity, such as
screen size when driving, and battery life when hiking, but
in spite of these minor shortcomings, it remains an
extremely versatile do everything GPS for my needs. The
largest improvement by far is the addition of a card slot
for increased map memory. This allows me to have the
entire navigator 2010, plus a couple of states worth of
topo maps at my immediate disposal whenever I need them.
Overall I am pleased with the upgrades in comparison to the
60Cs. While it is not perfect for any one activity, it is
an excellent compromise for an all around GPS for multiple
uses. I highly recommend installing power cords and
mounting systems in any vehicle you may be going to use
this GPS in, as the case does not lend itself to staying
put on a seat or dashboard, and running on vehicle power
will help conserve battery life. I further recommend using
rechargable batteries as the provide a longer use, and can
be easily recharged to use again.

BEST GPS FOR GEOCACHING AND MORE!
It's the first GPS I bought and I really enjoy it! I do
geocaching with it and also mountains hiking. It's a good
instrument for off roads trails (by foot or bicycle) and "on
road" travelling (by car). It's robust and waterproof. I
recommend it very much! (Excuse my English, I'm a French
Canadian!).

TOUGH GPS AND HIGH SENSITIVE
Pros: fast and sensitive satellite acquisition Cons: text description for geocaching I have bought this GPS for Geocaching and some trail. I
already have on hand an Oregon 300 and need a second unit
because my wife have fallen in love with Geocaching. I
have decide to try this one on a friend recommendation.
What I like, its a really fast unit for satellite
acquisition and keep it under dense cover. On theses
points, better than the Oregon. This GPS feel really tough.
For geocaching, text description could be better. The
Oregon for text description is the winner. Up to now, its a
great buy.

GARMIN GPS 60CSX
Pros: works under trees and in buildings Cons: none so far An outstanding product. Locks on satellites FAST! Works in
buildings, under trees and on cloudy days. As a former

the eTrex. Only complaint was that I had to update the
firmware. Garmin technical support was OUTSTANDING on this

GPSMAP 60CSX GPS
Pros: compact size, lightweight, generally user friendly Cons: always recalcs route screen could be brighter Generally very good experience with this unit, but
also being an owner of a StreetPilot, I am
disappointing this unit recalculates the route
every time it is loaded for navigation. Not a big
issue for most perhaps, but I hate created my
"perfect" route on the PC, only to have the GPS
change the routing when it recalculates. The
screen could be a bit brighter sometimes
difficult to see when wearing sunglasses.

THE BEST FOR A REASON..........
Pros: very fast receiving satellites, easy read screen. Cons: none so far. I have owned a Garmin GPS 2 PLUS, a Garmin V
deluxe,and now own a Nuvi 660 and a 60CSx, and
this is the best of the lot, its a take anywhere
unit that never fails, at least not so far,(using
it for 3 years). Its great for geocaching, with
its built-in softwear, and you can use it for
navigating in the city, using city navigator, but
this unit really shines in the country. I have
used it in remote Labrador on fishing trips,
saved all the tracks, all the waypoints and
simply recall it when i go back each year, very
comforting.I also use this a lot on my
snowmobiling trips, by plugging it in to the 12
volt system it never fails, and even on new
trails where the snow makes evrything look alike,
i always feel assured i will find my way out.

RECEPTION IS AMAZING...
Pros: reception - ease of use... Cons: mac software still woefully behind windows version I upgraded from an Etrex Vista and the difference in signal
acquisition was truly remarkable. With the 60csx I can get a signal
when under trees, in a vehicle, inside my home. My Etrex Vista,
also a nice GPSr, would rarely acquire a signal in those same
conditions.

FANTASTIC BUT UNRELIABLE GPS
Pros: logging tracks to memory card, streetmapping Cons: some units unreliable Great features, especially being able to log
tracks to the memory card and not have to download
or save the active logs each day. Great cross-over
unit for field use with no maps (I worked in
Mongolia) and as a compromise car sat-nav system
with DVD or SD mapping (home in Brisbane).
BUT...
Every so often some of the GPS60CSx units will
lose or corrupt their operating software after a
turn-on (go to setup then system then press menu
and software version, the GPS has two softwares
listed and the bottom one reads version 0.00 if
you have this problem). Garmin doesn't offer a
solution. The work-around will need the software
reinstalling via a PC update. Totally useless if
you are not within striking distance of a PC and
the latest updater.

This is a great unit. I moved up from a GPS V and
the additional features along with the N.America NT
2009 data card make this unit tops. Great for
snowmobiling especially the Electronic compass for
pinpointing your exact location and the nearest towns
for gas, food and lodging (using the NAmer data
card). I also have a StreetPilot 2720 great in the
car, truck and motorcycle but of no use while hiking,
and snowmobiling. The GPS60 CSX unit is well made,
great at picking up satellites, easy to put in your
pocket and long battery life from only two AA's. We
use this unit to plan fishing trips around the best
times for fishing and camping when the moon is full.

REVIEW
This GPS handheld is great! I used it during a recent hunting
trip. I was unfamiliar with the woods I was hunting in but this
handheld still made it easy to find the same tree stand no
matter which direction I approached it from. It was also fun
to use on the plane (above 10,000 ft). It's fun to look out
the window at cities and now with gps there is no guessing as
to what city or what state you are above. I also depended on
this gps to get me through a major city with turn by turn
directions. It saved me alot of time. I like the advisory
feature that pops up before the next turn, it seems to adjust
if you are going faster giving you more time to change lanes
and prepare for the turn or exit. I reccomend this unit if you
need a handheld for the trail and also want a navigator. There
are better easier to use city navigation units but this one
works just fine for me, I don't need something talking to me.

GOOD MULTIPURPOSE UNIT FOR MILITARY USE
There are six aircrew and sailors in HMCS CALGARY as part of CTF 150 supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in the Arabian Sea presently using the GPSMAP 60CSx. As far as I know the only GPS units on
board, aside from the military supplied units, are the Garmin units. Surprisingly, everyone bought the same model independently (says wonders about the reputation of this unit). I bought mine from gpscity.ca and was very happy with the service and delivery
time to Victoria, BC. The unit itself is robust, dependable, and up to the rigors of military use soakings, accidental drops, etc.
Most of us use it as a portable backup on both the water and in the helicopter. The reception and accuracy is frankly amazing. The mapping software for the area is accurate and reliable and really helps with our situational awareness with merely a glance - something that is very useful when in the air or conducting a complex at sea evolution. Battery life is very good - occasionally getting 20 hours off one set on Duracell NiMH. When ashore it is very useful as well - How can you get lost in a new port when you have routing software that takes you right to the
destination - or at the very least enables you to tell the cabbie which way to go. Overall this unit is highly recommended and there are at least six of us who can attest to this.

Wow this new Garmin 60CSX is great. We took it to Washington and Oregon and even in the Forest canopy it worked great. We could not believe how easy it was to pick up the satellites. Our old Garmin worked good, but nothing like this new one. Even in our home we are able to pick up satellites. We use our GPS mainly for geo-caching. This new GPS is right on to all the caches we have found. We are very happy with this model.

GARMIN TOPO MAP MICROSD CARD SE 2008
I received my Garmin GPS 60 CSx on May 2, along with the Topo US 2008 Southeast card. I called Garmin for a little help installing and they wer prompt and efficient. However, the 2008 SE Map is Obsolete. I know the datail on it is over 20 years old but I believe it to be over 25 years old.
Example is that I live on a lake in Alpharetta Ga The Lake has been here since at least 1983. However, the 2008 SE Map only shows a stream going through it. This is now frog pong now, this lake is over 200 acres of water and has five miles of shore line.
Another example is roadways on it. The mop shows Hwy 19 going from Alpharetta to Dalonega. Well, HWY 19 was replaced by Georgia 400 some 20 years ago as well. Many other descrepencies exist on this product, I only used these two as examples because they are such huge geographical characters that were developed in the early 80's that they are easy to use.
A TOPO Map using such outdated information is absolutely worthless to me and scary to use.

VERY GOOD GPSR
When used as a typical hand-held, this GPSr is absolutely amazing. It is not so good when used in a vehicle as it is very hard to see the screen during the daylight hours. In the evening however, it is excellent in a vehicle. You'll have to have this puppy connected with the cigarette lighter adapter to save on the batteries. Which brings be to my next point, boy does this ever go through batteries fast! (Use lithium batteries that have been used for a short period of time in order to drop the voltage down.) I also have installed a 2Gb memory card in mine as these days they are so cheap, why wouldn't you? This is a very sensitive model and it has no problems picking up satellites while inside my house. (Though I don't really need a GPSr to navigate between the rooms in my house.) So far there are no real complaints other than it has no direct Commodore VIC-20 support. :) Overall, you will be very happy with this model.

GOOD SO FAR
So far my only disappointment is no direct Mac support. I've had to load windowsxp using bootcamp on my Mac to use waypoint manager. Using windows kinda makes me feel dirty but gotta do what I gotta do.

LOUISIANA DEEP WOODS TEST
Maybe I expect too much out of this GPS but after reading all of the reviews- I guess I had no choice. Overall the GPS works better than most. I live in Louisiana and hunt in the deep, dark woods down here and I knew this would be the ultimate test. I was impressed with the ability to keep signal lock regardless of the tree obstructions. Its easy to use and the Topo Map I purchased separately was ok but not great. The one disappointment I had been with its accuracy. In the thick Louisiana canopy, 20-30 feet might as well be 20 miles. I found that returning to my waypoints- I was off by 50 to sometimes 70 feet which is not good. It keeps a signal/Sat lock in the thick canopy at all times BUT it does affect the accuracy. Also- while moving fast to a waypoint in the same environment, I in affect got to the way point before the GPS could "Catch-up". When I got to my ATV is was showing 75 feet from waypoints and as I stood at my ATV it eventually counted down to 15-20 feet. That wasn’t good. It’s like it’s constantly doing calculations to offset the lack of sat signal to give you the impression that you do have a sat lock. In the open field, light woods and open water it’s superior but, if your a deep woods hunter who needs 10-15ft accuracy- it is not too much better than less priced models.chadb19_2000@yahoo.com

I got my 60CSx for Christmas (06). This being my 4th GPS I find it to be excellent and the best one yet. I find that the acquire times are very quick and the accuracy exceeds the eTrex models I had before. The ability to store extra maps (with a 1gig card) is a big bonus as is the ability to add custom POIs to the unit. This is definitely the Cadillac of GPSs.

---- language menu include only English French Spanish and Portuguese!!!!! I have also a 60CS and it has more than 10 languages.
I think Garmin is de-evolving his units.

For the person wondering about the size of card the unit takes, I have a 60Cx and I have installed a 2 Gig Micro SD card and it works. I have all of the MetroGuide Canada v4 and MetroGuide Europe V8 installed with a couple of hundred Megs to spare. You have to ensure your computer recognizes the Micro SD card as removable disk drive and download it to the drive. If you attempt to download it to the unit it will comeback with an error message “too many files”. It takes almost two hour to download it through the device, it must be USB 1.1, I have a fast card reader and I will try to see if it will download to the card reader, theoretically it should since it is still a removable drive.

Just got a 60CSx and was a bit dissapointed by several things:
1. The overall display appearance seems “dumbed-down” a bit somehow from my previous 60CS. The menu icons look like the cartoonish ones used in the color eTrex units.
2. The alarm clock function as in the 60CS is totally omitted! I found this feature quite handy in the 60CS. Maybe going to be added by an update?
3. I was dissapointed that it wouldn’t locate indoors (at least where I was) as I thought it was supposed to be able to do.
4. There is no menu icon relating to, or dealing with, any aspect of the mini-SD card one might be using in the unit. This would be a handy feature at least to know what size TF card you had in the unit as well as the amount of memory in use (and still available).

Lots of people are expecting this GPS to be the perfect GPS. I really like it so far and I don't have any complaints. Most of the complaints you'll see are people comparing the features of this GPS to the 60CS. The features most people are complaining about are really minor.
Icons: Ok the new icons are more cartoon like. None of them are hard to tell what the function is which is the point of an icon. It's an artistic style choice some people will like it and some will not.
No alarm: I have about 10 devices with an alarm clock on them I don't see where not including this feature is such a big deal.
No barometric trends while off: Garmin has stated this is a limitation of the new hardware. Useful if you're in the back country and can't get a weather radio broadcast. Otherwise a mostly unused feature.
Expectation of indoor reception: I can personally get reception in my house. This is not going to hold true for everyone. It's still a GPS and needs a somewhat unobstructed view of the sky. The new receiver is a HUGE improvement over the old one though and gets a lock much faster and holds it better in terrain that is tough for a GPS to work in.
Over-Expectation of accuracy: People keep forgetting that this is still a consumer GPS and is limited as to the accuracy it can get. Just because the GPS says it's got 3' accuracy doesn't mean it's correct. The 60CS and the 60CSx calculate their accuracy differently.Since the 60CS claims it is more accurate people fully trust the number the GPS is reporting and claim the 60CSx is less accurate. This isn't the case however in real world tests in clear skys both units have similar accuracy. However in challenging reception situations the 60CSx get better signal and is then "more accurate".
GPS "Walking": The 60CSx tends to walk around when stopped for a while causing the stopped time and distance traveled to be inaccurate. Garmin is aware of the problem and has stated it will be fixed with a firmware release.
Mini SD Card issues: This is the first offering by Garmin with a removable memory card. There are a few limitations however compared to other brands. First the cards are ONLY used to store maps. No waypoints, tracks, routes, etc. are stored on the cards. It would be nice to have these features but it doesn't seem that this is something that will (or can??) be changed with a firmware update. People also complain that there is no way to view information about the memory card (Space left, file listing, etc.) since there is no way to add data without having the GPS hooked into MapSource this is a non-issue. You can't write to it so why does it matter how much space is left? Oh and if you haven't seen a Mini SD card in person, wow they are really tiny about the size of a fingernail. People without good dexterity might have issues changing the card.
This is a really great GPS. If you have a 60CS already you need to carefully weigh your decision to upgrade since this unit will really only add increased reception(not accuracy) and the removable memory card. If you're upgrading from something other than a 60CS you'll love it, I sure do.

First off, I'm no newbie to using a GPS, this is my third. In all fairness they were all Garmins, a 45 and a Vista. My main use is in woods and fields while metal detecting. I use them mostly to mark where things were found, and also for navigating deep woods. The place I took it to test is the worst I've ever been in. I was in a valley, with a double canopy. That is, one about 80' and the other about 15'. On a sunny day it's so dark in some spots that I wear a "headlight" just to see what I'm digging. The Vista works "OK" in some areas there, but most spots I'd only get one bar drifting in and out, rendering it useless....even after moving around for a better view of the sky. In the spot I used for the 60CSx, the Vista wouldn't even get one satellite.
I turned on the 60CSx and in about a minute it had about 3/4 power locks on 5 satellites. About a minute later it had 6! You have to see what this place is like to truly understand how shocked I was. The best stated accuracy it would get there was 25'. I marked the spot and turned the GPS off. Walked about 100 yards away, turned it back on, and navigated my way back to within about 10' of the spot. I tried it again a few times with similar results.
I tried the same test with both the Vista and 60CSx, in a spot where the Vista would get reception. The Vista stated 13' and the 60CSx stated 21' accuracy. The result was that both got within 10'- 12' of the marked spot (a shovel in the ground). For some reason the 60CSx always stated much worse accuracy than the unit was capable of. I can't understand why, but honestly don't care now because I got used to it. The Vista was no more accurate than the 60CSx.
The only real gripes I have are that the barometer is reading way off many times, even after calibrating it. The other thing is when I hit "Go To", it automatically goes to the Map page, not the Navigate page (Compass/Pointer). This might be me, but I can't find how to change the default. If it weren't for these, I would deffinitely rate it at 5 stars.
For me, the reception of this thing more than makes up for the cons, but they still bother me. I have to look further into why the barometer isn't working right, as the Vista worked fine (and went straight to the Nav page from "Go To". I'm very pleased with it for what I need, and can actually stand over the spot I dug something and get a great signal. I'm still in awe.

My experience is with the Etrex Vista. In shopping a replacement I found some problems with the 60CSx.
Why doesnt Garmin produce the reciever specs to show just how much better this one is? They claim it is better, but wheres the specs?
The SD card (micro not mini) supplied is 64Mb, but there are 256Mb available. What is the max the unit can use? What if I install a 512 or 1Gb card?
Thus far, Garmin is lacking on the details, and long on marketing.

Great GPS. I really like the user interface and I get great reception even in heavy foliage. The backlit display is very bright and battery life is quite good. My only negative about this device was it came with very basic MapSource software so you will still need to buy a MapSource product for $100+ if you wish to do city navigation.
