GTM 20 FM TMC PORTABLE TRAFFIC RECEIVER PRODUCT DETAILS

Traffic tie-ups can't always be prevented. But with Garmin's GTM 20, they can often be avoided.

The GTM 20 is an integrated FM-band receiver, antenna, and cigarette lighter adapter that provides real-time Traffic Message Channel (TMC) data to compatible Garmin GPS navigation products—which then depict and identify problem areas on their moving-map displays. Available in a fast-growing number of cities throughout North America and Europe, this TMC data gives prompt, accurate notification of accidents, road construction, police, or emergency action, etc.—so drivers can visually monitor traffic flow and, if necessary, select an alternate route.

The TMC traffic alerting system works on an FM sideband signal which utilizes RDS (Radio Data Service) technology. Digitized and coded real-time traffic broadcasts are received via a ''silent'' FM data channel—which means that drivers can still listen to music or news programming on their car radios, without interference from the incoming FM traffic data transmissions. In most areas, depending on the service provider, TMC traffic broadcasts are continuous—there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. With the GTM 20, you see traffic developments in real-time, as they happen, so you can make the right decision sooner. The system will alert you when a traffic problem is on your route and propose an alternate route to avoid the incident.

Unlike the GTM 10 and 11, the GTM 20 is an all-in-one antenna, traffic receiver, and 12-volt cigarette adapter.

GTM 20 FM TRAFFIC RECEIVER

Pros: expanded canadian coverage
Cons: none
Works Great. Bought lifetime Navteq Life Traffic.Navteq has just increased coverage in Canada.Oct.2009.Pickering to Niagara. It rerouted me around const. on 401.express lanes to collectors and back again automaticaly without telling me ahead of time.Green light -traffic moving well, yelow light- moderate traffic, red light-advoid area.Touch green bar at top of screen and all problems are shown. Touch view map, bottom centre of screen, all areas are marked on map. This works all the time and updates constently while you drive. You do not have to have a route designated for it to alert you of a problem. Just view map is all you need.It puts up a caution sign on the lower right side of the screen with delay minites on it and automaticaly adds that time to to your destionation, if you have one set. Touch the delay icon and it changes screen and shows you were problem is.If lengthy delay push advoid and let Nuvi do the work.

WORKS - BUT READ THE FINE PRINT FOR GTA

If you check the Navteq website, Toronto Area only gets incident reporting updates via RDS - not traffic flow.

WORKS ONLY IF THE CAR IS OFF!

Pros: nice when it works
Cons: doesn't work with engine on
I can't seem to find any mention of this anywhere and not getting any support from Garmin. I noticed something very odd. The LED for the traffic activity on the device only goes green (working) while the engine is off. I can see the traffic reports in the GPS and it works just fine with my nuvi 770. However, as soon as I start the engine the LED goes yellow and no more traffic reports are available. It's obviously some type of interference but I can't get this to work any other way - so I can only see the traffic if I wait and do not start the car.

HMMM

I got the NUvi 760, came with the traffic receiver with a free subscription... It worked for the very first day, then nothing ! Firmware up-to-date, everything is up to date. It stays solid orange, which means looking for signal... why it worked first days, then nothing after ?!?! Not sure this thing works or worth the money

Well it is working now for the c550 since last firmware 6.00 2 weeks ago and everything is fine so far. Good coverage in Toronto , from Hamilton to Oshawa and North to Newmarket. We also get Slow Traffic reports with Delay Times but it only updates from 5 am to 8 pm Mon-Fri so far.

I have C550 StreetPilot. I have been waiting since July for various firmware updates to make the TMC traffic to work in Toronto. It's October now and still waiting. I was going to get the 550 for my folks for Christmas but will be looking at something else now.

Cdn customers: Gramin web site says coverage in available in Canada and will quite happily take your $60 for a subscription. I did this and got no traffic services. Called and was told I needed receiver firmware update. This was released 2 weeks later and still no services. Called and was told I needed main unit update. This was released 1 week later and still no services. Need to make another call - don't waste your money on this right now.

Since last July 1st, 2007 it is up and running. But Garmin Customers are still waiting for a software update due by late July to support the traffic services here in Canada.
