The MapSource United States TOPO CD-ROM maps are similar to U.S. Geological Survey 1:100,000-scale topographic paper maps. United States TOPO includes trip and waypoint management functions that allow you to transfer waypoints, routes, and tracks between your PC and nearly all GARMIN GPS units. With MapSource, you can view highways, roads, hiking trails, snowmobile trails, backwoods trails, elevation contours, point elevations, summits, some bathymetric contours, geographic names, churches, and schools. Shoreline detail is included for lakes, reservoirs, small bodies of water, waterways, rivers, and streams.

Icons represent boat ramps, dams, marinas, campgrounds, public facilities, mile markers, first-aid stations, picnic, swimming, and ski areas, wrecks, fuel, and dangerous and restricted areas. In addition, nautical navaids for the 50 states are provided, including radio beacons, RACONs, and fog signals; river, harbor, and other lights; and day beacons and lighted and unlighted buoys. Wrecks and obstructions-such as shipwrecks, submerged rocks, obstructions, and other hazards to nautical navigation-are displayed. If you have a map download-compatible GARMIN GPS, United States TOPO will allow you to download all the above information directly to your GPS unit.

Please note: The trip and waypoint management functions of this product work with nearly all GARMIN GPS units, excluding the GPS100 family and panel mount aviation units.

 		 The Garmin topo maps are very poorly done compared to DeLorme Topo USA. Not even in the same league. DeLorme has mountain and hill shading, more vivid contours, etc, giving their maps a much more accurate and realistic view of the landscape. Almost like looking down on the real thing. DeLorme has many more features also. Unfortunately, Garmin GPS's will only accept their MapSource Topo so I had to go purchase it a few months back. More than once I've had to go to my DeLorme to get the "real" lay of the land, mark some Lat & Long waypoints, then mark them on my Garmin Topo, then load that particular route and/or map into my GPS. I mentioned all this to a Garmin rep not long ago and he said Garmin's priority has always been roads and streets, plus their Topo is 9 years old and maybe there'll be an improvement in the future.
