Great unit for the money. Uses AA batteries and they last about 10-12 hours depending on if you use backlight feature or not. I ride a motorcycle and use the direct route street software. So far it has been reliable but as with most street software it does not always send you the quickest way. The screen is small but not as small as Garmins comparable unit. The screen tends to throw a lot of glare and can be difficult to see in the daytime. If I cant find a hood to shade the screen Ill have to make one. This problem exists in all makes of handhelds. Expandable SD slot allows for maps up to 64mb. This covers quite a large area. I use a 128 mb card which does not switch over maps automatic. It only takes a moment to do it by hand. The buttons are a little small for riding gloves. In my opinion to get a better unit you would have to triple the dollars spent. Excellent unit for the money.

After several experiances with other GPS manufacturers, Magellan Gold works the best, with mapping software, or stand alone use. Accuracy is very good. I've had the unit "put through its paces", by testing it on an aircraft using a published GPS approach chart. Pilots said it brought them right where they were supposed to be, including proper lineup for final approach to the airport. Wouldn't think of changing brands. The only drawback is the view screen. Extending the screen the full length of the unit would help, with the control keys placed on the side of the unit, instead of using up space on the face of the unit.

we are first time/ begginer and buyers of a gps unit, we did a lot of research before purchasing not only one but two gps units -meridian gold north america (for driving accross canada and boating usuage) and explorist 100 north america a cheaper model in case we loose it (for hiking, camping, in wooded areas, and riding our bike) our meridian gold north america gps hand unit, is not only a excellent buy, even at a 450+canadian price tag, but being a complete begginer we found it easy to use BUT only after we figured out how the uploads and downloads worked at first it was frustrating because we did not understand how to use the map upload, and could not understand why it took 3 hours to download a region, once we figured it out which took us about a half a day, we were very surprised on how easy it was after all, and by day two we were experts on uploading and downloading, we had a lot of fun driving around ontario visiting everyone we know in different area's, while my husband navigated with the meridian gold gps unit, in the passenger seat. this was a lot of fun, he could see how fast i was driving, upcoming streets, the icon to the nearest gas station came in very handy, we found the meridian gold unit very accurate on our canadian roads, remember you need someone with you to navigating while driving, you can not read the unit and drive at the same time, if by your self you will have to pull over to find what you need on the gps, our next trip in three weeks will be going/moving to newfoundland to live. we have already charted our route we know how many km it is , eta, etc. as for the cd that comes with it, once we learned how to use it, we had a lot of fun finding address and places all across canada, of people we knew, and charted them on our meridian gold north america gps unit..this unit is great for everything, from hiking /fishing/hunting/camping/driving/boating/etc. .our beginners knowledge over all rating with 10 being the best, is 8 out of 10 , if any cons about the unit it would be the upload/download time it takes to download into/out of the gps, and make sure you carry extra batteries, we went through two sets in 24 hour period which is accurate to the usage, for complete begginers like us, the best peice of advise besides reading the manual very carefully, is to familarize your self with the cd, set up your regions and way points on the computer first, once saved on your computer you then then dowload to the gps unit, and remember the bigger the region the longer it takes to download, but once that is done, you will be very happy with the meridan gold and all the features, we are still learning more everyday, and the more we learn, the more we are impressed, for us it was an excellent investment, but because of the price tag we decided to purchase a second cheaper unit for our outdoor basic local needs, even though the meridian gold north america gps unit will not only give you everything ++++++more then the explorist 100, we like it for general every day use, see our review on the explorist 100 thank you for reading and we hope this helps any begginers like we are........perry from ontario, soon to be newfoundland
