Can an AC powered GPS device be hard wired to an automobile without the cigarette lighter plug. Does the plug have a DC converter built into it? In other words..can it be wired with out the PLUG? The Tom Tom unit comes with an automobile charding cord...but I want to hook to fuse box without the plug. Can it be done ?

Hello Don,

You can wire a DC powered GPS directly to a fuse box if you have the proper bare wire cable. Tomtom puts a special voltage converter in the cigarette lighter tip. You can take apart the DC plug and wire the DC leads to the fuse box as long as you do not bypass the voltage converter and put a fuse between the cable and the fuse box.

You may also want to use this device.

You can wire it to a 12V source under your dash.

Cheers

If you want to wire a AC power outlet in your vehicle you will need a inverter.
