Why is there such a problem with usb to serial with Win 7 and GPS?
Win 7 is the newest operating system and a lot of mariners on the coast are asking the same question.
Can't the powers (Microsoft etc) figure this out and write software to cure this problem. We went through the same sort of thing in 1999 with Win ME and XP when they stopped using serial ports. Some body is missing the boat (no pun intended)

Hello Vic,

After doing some research it looks like this cable is not supported under Windows 7. It uses the PDIUSBD12 USB chipset. I could not find any drivers at this time for your OS. I do not know if it will be supported in the future. I hope so.

I don't know how to put this nicely but this issue happens every few years when Microsoft updates their operating system. It will take a while for all devices to be supported if they ever will be. I always suggest to my customer never buy a MS OS until it has been on the market for at least a year to ensure you will have limited issues.

A lot of older devices will also not be supported in new operating systems. It may be time to upgrade you GPS equipment to prevent future head aches.

I got around this problem with a Express card Serial adapter. Of course this won't work if you have a desktop without a serial port, or a laptop without a cardslot. The adapter I found is a bit pricey ($80), but cheaper then a new GPS. Make sure you check that the adapter is Windows 7 (and 64-bit if applicable) compatible.
Would GPS city think about carrying an adapter?

Hello Ali,

I am sure the makers of the cable we have will eventually get the Windows 7 support. It is odd they are not their yet.
